At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we’ve undertaken several experiments and initiatives focused on Generative Artificial Intelligence. We provided several examples at the Generative AI in Libraries (GAIL) conference. For this presentation, we provided a revised and expanded overview of our initiatives for the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) Fall General Meeting. We explained license-related restrictions on uses of AI. We discussed the limitations of the retrieval-augmented generation tools currently available in the library. We summarized how we’ve tested ChatBots to support licensing and we showed how we’ve tried to use AI to improve data visualization for collections outreach. We …

Moving the theoretical into practical, seven of our colleagues will present real-life case studies. What worked - what didn’t - what would they do differently?

This paper presents an analysis of the knowledge structure of the Mexican scientific community in the field of Space Science in Web of Science, between 2000 and 2019. CiteSpace software helped to identify the influential papers in the domain. The findings of this study shed light on the historical development of Space Science in Mexico and highlight the country's scientific performance with the worldwide trend. Moreover, the study emphasized the importance of bibliometrics in understanding the scientific undercurrents of a discipline. In this presentation, we describe how we used data from rapid and in-depth student usability testing to assist with the redesign of the library’s website as we finally transitioned to LibGuides CMS. Using the Springy tools; LibGuides, LibGuides CMS, LibCal, and LibWizard we outlined how we were able to create and carry out this highly effective testing, resulting in a better understanding of how our students navigate our site and how to improve it. Models used in geospatial data science are often built and optimized for a specific local context, such as a particular location at a point in time. However, upon publication, these models may be generalized beyond this context, reused in research simulating or predicting other times and places. Without sufficient information or documentation, bias embedded in these models can in turn result in bias in the reuser’s research outputs. Drawing on a long-term qualitative case study of aging dams researchers and developers of models used by these researchers, we find significant documentation gaps. As funding agencies and publishers reiterate research data sharing expectations (1), many higher-education institutions have demonstrated their commitment to the long-term stewardship of research data by connecting researchers to local infrastructure, with dedicated staffing, that eases the burden of data sharing. Institutional repositories are an example of this investment (2). They provide support for researchers in sharing data that might otherwise be lost: data without a disciplinary repository, data from projects with limited funding, or data that are too large to sustainably store elsewhere. One way librarians can equip and empower ourselves is by understanding the building blocks of how machines and automation work. Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Webpages change over time, and web archives hold copies of historical versions of webpages. Users of web archives, such as journalists, want to find and view changes on webpages over time. However, the current search interfaces for web archives do not adequately support this task. For the web archives that include a full-text search feature, multiple versions of the same webpage that match the search query are shown individually without enumerating changes, or are grouped together in a way that hides changes. This poster demonstrates our innovative approach to embedding AI literacy within the first-year information literacy program at an R2 research university. Comparing The Preparation Of Youth Services Librarians To Their On-The-Ground Experiences: A Grounded Theory Study Incorporating Criticism And Connoisseurship, Anne Holland

The purpose of this study was to better understand the on-the-ground preparation of youth services librarians, in contrast to their professional training in Master’s of Library Science (MLIS) programs. Classic Grounded Theory was the predominant methodology for this qualitative study, and elements of Criticism and Connoisseurship were also utilized. Document review, interviews, and journaling activities with ten participants were the primary methods of data collection. Key findings from this dissertation include a grounded theory explaining the current state of preparation for youth services librarianship, and multiple avenues for further study.
