Communications in Information Literacy
For over thirty years, numerous studies have discussed the contradiction between the growing importance of information literacy instruction to the Library's core mission and lack of pedagogical training for new librarians. This article reviews the more recent contributions on the topic, presents a survey of New York State MLS curricula and describes initiatives of pedagogy training offered in that region outside of MLS programs. The authors focus on the Library Instruction Leadership Academy (LILAC), an innovative, semester-long training program created in Western New York State to offer instruction in the pedagogical foundation and practical experience essential for teaching information literacy …

Teaching Web Evaluation: A Cognitive Development Approach, Candice Benjes-Small, Alyssa Archer, Katelyn Tucker, Lisa Vassady, Jennifer Resor Whicker
Communications in Information Literacy
Web evaluation has been a standard information literacy offering for years and has always been a challenging topic for instruction librarians. Over time, the authors had tried a myriad of strategies to teach freshmen how to assess the credibility of Web sites but felt the efforts were insufficient. By familiarizing themselves with the cognitive development research, they were able to effectively revamp Web evaluation instruction to improve student learning. This article discusses the problems of traditional methods, such as checklists; summarizes the cognitive development research, particularly in regards to its relationship to the ACRL Information Literacy Standards; and details the …

The academic library can play a crucial role in experiential learning, particularly through student internships. This library is one of the larger units on campus to employ student workers and we spend many hours training them to handle questions at service desks, assist with cataloging functions, help digitize materials, and a variety of other tasks. In 2011, we built on that idea of student workers and partnered with the University Honors Program to offer customized experiential learning through paid internships. These internships allowed us to spend additional time with students in preparation for their chosen careers or graduate school, helped …

Librarians As Consultants: The Convergence Of Information Literacy, Data Literacy And Scholarly Communication In Undergraduate Research, Lisa Zilinski, David Scherer, Clarence Maybee
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Undergraduate research has been identified as a high impact educational practice by the LEAP Report. At Purdue we support undergraduate research through various library-driven initiatives such as information literacy (IL), data literacy (DL) and scholarly communication (SC). Although these initiatives can be utilized to support undergraduate research individually, librarians are beginning to recognize a need to provide a service model that offers a more complementary/holistic approach that better utilizes the full capability of these initiatives. This was illustrated in the March 2013, ARCL Committee on Research and the Scholarly Environment White Paper, “Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy”. The …

Image And Multimedia Resources In An Academic Environment: A Qualitative Study Of Students’ Experiences And Literacy Practices, Krystyna K. Matusiak
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship
The digital environment provides an abundance of images and multimedia and offers a new potential for using resources in multiple modes of representation for teaching and learning. This paper reports the findings of a case study that investigated the use of image and multimedia resources in an undergraduate classroom. The study assumed a contextual approach and focused on different class contexts and students’ literacy practices. The class, which took place in a resource-rich, multimodal environment, was perceived by students as a positive learning experience. The distribution of resources and their role in teaching and learning varied and depended on the …

Librarians and library users face challenges with multiple ebook formats. The most common are confusion on the part of users as to what file type they need and what the file type means, as well as how to download it properly to their devices. The sheer number of vendor interfaces also cause technical difficulties due to format variety and instructions for use. In fact, in October 2012, Library Journal Patron Profiles reported that 23% of library patrons were unsuccessful in borrowing ebooks due to technical difficulties. Library users, faced with a variety of ebook formats on a regular basis, are …

It is no small feat to develop a replicable, dependable information literacy rubric that is appropriate to an institution’s unique student population. But once the rubric is created, how does it become edited, adopted, and utilized by campus stakeholders to actually improve information literacy learning? And, what happens when you multiply this by a consortial context, wherein one information literacy rubric is presented to five undergraduate colleges and two graduate schools, each with unique governance models, assessment profiles, and relationships with the library they share?
The visual nature of a poster will provide a perfect means to map out the …

Flip This Class: Using A Flipped Classroom Approach To Teach Information Literacy, Nancy E. Fawley
Library Faculty Presentations
What is a flipped classroom?
- Pedagogical model that reverses lecture and homework
- Students view or listen to lecture material on their own time, while class time is spent reviewing and applying what they learned
- Combines synchronous and asynchronous learning
- Students are not passive participants in the classroom
- Focus is on “just-in-time” instruction
- Promotes better student-teacher (or librarian) interaction
Overview: The Role Of Information Policy In Resolving Global Challenges, Sharon A. Weiner
Overview: The Role Of Information Policy In Resolving Global Challenges, Sharon A. Weiner
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
Governments in many countries recognize the importance of knowledge-based societies whose citizens are adaptable and have the means to engage in continuous learning. Information societies can address global challenges far more readily than those that do not adopt its characteristics of ICTs (information and communication technologies) and connectivity; usable content; infrastructure and deliverability; and human intellectual capability.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is a metropolitan institution that serves a large number of students from nontraditional, first-generation, and ethnically diverse populations in an increasingly online environment. One challenge for UALR is how the university can encourage student retention and graduation, as undergraduate student success is a major focus of current campus initiatives. Recognizing that information literacy skills contribute to student success, UALR conducted an assessment of undergraduates using the Project SAILS cohort test. Collecting data using a combination of the SAILS instrument, a Blackboard community, and WordPress forms, librarians at the Ottenheimer Library collected information …

Strategizing For Public Policy: The Information Literacy State Proclamation Project, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman, Emily Prause
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This paper describes a project designed to raise the awareness of policymakers about the importance of information literacy to achieve societal goals. Issues benefit from the governmental support, prioritization, mandates, and funding that can result when there is policy behind them. Studies indicate that many people lack the ability to draw on quality sources of information for a variety of purposes. Attention by policymakers would accelerate the inclusion of information literacy in settings such as education, workforce training, citizenship preparation, and lifelong learning. One way to raise awareness of policymakers is by recommending a proclamation to government executives.

Teaching Information Literacy For Life: Addressing The Issues, Sharon A. Weiner
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Information literacy is not only a critical competency for academic success, but also for decision-making and problem-solving in the workplace and in everyday life. This presentation discussed what we know about finding and using information in these contexts. It explored key issues such as:
What does information literacy mean in the workplace and in everyday life?
How does it differ from information literacy for students?
What are the issues and how can they be addressed?
The implications for policy included an update on the work of the National Forum on Information Literacy.
