The study discussed the nature of information and asserted that the dissemination of information empowers learning since the world is increasingly becoming information-based. It looked at information processing as the standard for understanding and satisfactory learning against memorization, leading to poor academic performance as it does not allow what the learner has learned to be part of him. The study also discussed that the instructor, facilitator, teacher, lecturer, and users have a role to play in processing information that improves learning. What remains essential is the …

Small Actions, Grassroots Efforts, And Community Building: Inspiring Fresh Perspectives On Teaching Information Literacy In Uncertain Times, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis

Libraries Scholarship

In this workshop two academic librarians will share about their grassroots approach to fostering civic and digital literacies through their work in teaching “lateral reading” and online source evaluation. We will reflect on how a small action, creating an online research guide, was a seed for growing roots - connections and relationships - and for expanding our own teaching and our educational outreach. While we’ll touch on work with lateral reading, our primary focus will be reflecting with fellow librarians on small actions as regenerative responses to burnout and as starting points for more collective engagement in civic literacy education. …

Diy Disinformation: Using Fake Crafting Videos To Combat Fake News, Elizabeth M. Downey Apr 2022

Diy Disinformation: Using Fake Crafting Videos To Combat Fake News, Elizabeth M. Downey

UL Publications

When Ann Reardon started her YouTube channel How to Cook That, she likely didn’t expect to spend a bulk of her time debunking so-called “cooking hack” videos. Amateur bakers and other viewers would ask her why the so-called easy recipes from channels like So Yummy didn’t work for them. As a service. she would demonstrate the so-called “shortcuts,” explain why they didn’t work, and then show how to execute a similar recipe the right way. With her willing husband serving as the unfortunate taste-tester, the videos gained popularity followed by requests for similar content, expanding to crafting and other “lifehack” …

Building A Culture Of Collaboration And Shared Responsibility For Educational Equity Work Through An Inclusive Teaching Community Of Practice, Francesca Marineo, Chelsea Heinbach, Rosan Mitola

Collaborative Librarianship

For libraries to be equitable spaces as educational institutions and places of employment, it is necessary that educational equity be a shared, collaborative goal. Unfortunately, equity and inclusion work in libraries has historically been an individual pursuit that falls disproportionately on the shoulders of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) library workers. Communities of practice employ social learning principles to facilitate praxis and offer opportunities to develop shared goals, language, and responsibility. This article explores how we developed and implemented an inclusive teaching community of practice with members of our instruction department in order to foster a culture of …

Transitioning From Academia To The Workplace: Information Literacy Experiences Of Business Students, Heather A. Howard, Margaret L. Phillips, Garrett R. Brewster

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Workplace preparedness is an integral application of information literacy skills for our students as they move forward and leave the university. It is also important to prepare students for the information needs they will face as they complete co-ops and internships during their time in academia. To best educate students in the information literacy skills they will need on-the-job, it is important for librarians to understand what types of information employers are requiring students to use in these co-op and internship experiences and in what ways. While work has been done on this regarding engineering students (Jeffryes and Lafferty, 2012), …

Based on research conducted with undergraduate music students at two universities, DePauw University and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, this paper examines how students understand and interact with content embedded in infographics, and measures retention of information presented in either plain-text or infographic form.

Click Restraint For Critical Online Source Evaluation, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis Apr 2022

Click Restraint For Critical Online Source Evaluation, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis

Libraries Scholarship

We turn to the Internet everyday for information about little things like when a local store opens, as well as about much bigger issues like how to manage critical health conditions or who to vote for. The search results we see first aren’t necessarily the most relevant; they may appear at the top of a list because that site has been visited often or because a company or organization has figured out how to “game the system” through “search engine optimization” (SEO). So how, in an effort to better understand an issue and to find trustworthy information, do we and …

The Christian Librarian

But I was an English major as an undergrad. What do I know about biblical theology resources? If this type of thought has crossed your mind, you are not alone! No one can know everything about every academic discipline. There are people who know, however, who can help us develop a more complete library collection. But guess what? They do not know everything either! It takes the collective effort of many to truly provide a well-rounded collection that supports your degree programs. Collaboration is key, especially for solo librarians with limited time and resources, but this applies to all librarians. The …

English Is Not Dead! Long Live English: Teaching The Evolution Of English And Inclusive Communication Via Online, Face To Face Or Hybrid Instruction, Teresa Marie Kelly, Stephanie Thompson, Sheryl Bone Apr 2022

English Is Not Dead! Long Live English: Teaching The Evolution Of English And Inclusive Communication Via Online, Face To Face Or Hybrid Instruction, Teresa Marie Kelly, Stephanie Thompson, Sheryl Bone

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

When popular media and many individuals discuss changes in English, some erroneously contend that the language has always been the same and changes amount to little more than “politically correct woke liberalism” desired by only certain people. The English language continually evolves as a natural process that nothing can force nor prevent. Field-specific language also changes with increased understanding and knowledge. The variety of English taught to most students also shifts as Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)/Writing Across Disciplines (WAD) initiatives increasingly focus on Global English rather than the standard of any one country or group. Even informal interactions with …

Critical Thinking In The Age Of Misinformation: Information Literacy For Citizenship, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jennfer Lobo Meeks, Barbara Robertson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. This challenge must be acknowledged and addressed by academic institutions.

Session presenters will provide an overview of their work, “Critical …

Painless Plagiarism: Collaboration To Develop An Interdisciplinary Plagiarism Tutorial, Lauren Mcmillan Apr 2022

Painless Plagiarism: Collaboration To Develop An Interdisciplinary Plagiarism Tutorial, Lauren Mcmillan

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

During the Spring and Summer of 2021, Reference & Instruction Librarians collaborated with an Instructional Designer to create a university branded plagiarism tutorial. Utilizing open access/open educational resources provided a template, while being able to customize to the institution’s needs by incorporating elements from the university’s academic dishonesty policy.

The main goals were to have an interactive tutorial where concepts like patchwriting and paraphrasing are suitably explained and students have the opportunity to test their knowledge throughout. Additionally, having a final assessment/quiz to prove students completed the tutorial was important to faculty. The tutorial is housed on the libraries’ website, …

Faculty Co-Acting: Merging Information Literacy With Inclusive Pedagogy, Kay Coates, Beverly King Miller

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Opportunities for humanizing teaching and learning in poly-synchronous and hybrid instruction settings are undeniable blessings of having to adapt to COVID-19 predictable unpredictability. The ACRL Information Literacy Framework is one such instrument that ideally adapts to this purpose. Intentional collaborative efforts between instruction librarians and faculty could allow for information literacy praxis to be incorporated into differentiated instruction. Under the canopy of Inclusive Pedagogy this admixture could be engagingly contextualized and actively executed in desired learning spaces during times like these. Realizing the needs of students who will be entering classroom settings with learning disruptions, this partnership marries information literacy …

Misinformation And Information Literacy: Strategies For College First Year Information Literacy Instruction, Grant Hardaway, Anne Jumonville Graf

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Information literacy education encompasses a wide range of instructional strategies and content, some of which include media literacy and metaliteracy. Increasing attention to the development and spread of misinformation on social media underscores the need for information literacy instruction to address this issue. At the same time, first year college students continue to need foundational information literacy skills in order to be successful in their assigned research projects. At the presenters’ institution, most library-led instruction emphasizes strategies and resources for success in an academic context, without much focus on other information landscapes, such as social media. This presentation will share …

Revisiting The One-Minute Paper: Personal Reflections, Student Engagement And Assessing The Assessment, Rebecca Pappert Maniates

Research Collection Library

The one-minute paper (OMP) is a popular one-shot session assessment which often consists of asking two questions: 1 . What is the most important thing you learned today? 2 . What questions do you still have? Although simple, each question has a purpose. The first is broad, focusing on the importance of concepts learned (Chizmar & Ostrosky, 1998), and promotes active learning and reflection (Stead, 2005). The second assesses the progress of the learning process and where support is still needed (Chizmar & Ostrosky, 1998).Although studies show the OMP is effective when assessing student knowledge before and after one-shot sessions …
