Senior Design Theses: Moving To An Electronic Collection By Collaborating With The School Of Engineering, Susan K. Boyd

Staff publications, research, and presentations

For years, the University Library served as a literal “storage room” for the latest ten years of printed senior design or capstone theses. Both the receiving and cataloging of student undergraduate work were at best “spotty,” and incomplete. By working with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and departmental administrative assistants, the library and the School of Engineering developed a new process for electronic submission of these documents, and this in turn resulted in the creation of the University Library’s institutional repository called “Scholar Commons.” The first collection within Scholar Commons will showcase the senior design theses. This title, part of an ongoing series, chronicles American cars made between 1973 and 1980. Entries include background on the nameplate, models available, cost, and measurements of the vehicle. Photos of the cars are shown by manufacturer and year, and the advertising slogans used to sell the cars are a nice touch to open each entry.Appendixes include minor makes and "replicars" (a copy of a vintage or classic automobile), option groups and packages, tire sizes, identification and recalls, and manufacturer logos. Two main styles of SOA exist, namely SOAP based services and RESTful services. If you have ever had to seek technical information, you have probably run into an information access roadblock or a pay-wall. This is a major issue for our students as they leave our universities and our subscription resources and move on to become practitioners of their field. This session will outline the different types of freely available technical information - including patents, government funded technical reports, and open access journal literature - and demonstrate how to access them. Data Mining The Harness Track And Predicting Outcomes, Robert P. Schumaker

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper presented the S&C Racing system that uses Support Vector Regression (SVR) to predict harness race finishes and analyzed it on fifteen months of data from Northfield Park. We found that our system outperforms the most common betting strategies of wagering on the favorites and the mathematical arbitrage Dr. Z system in five of the seven wager types tested. This work would suggest that an informational inequality exists within the harness racing market that is not apparent to domain experts.

The study examines the research productivity of KIIT University, Odisha, India in regard to 361 papers indexed in Scopus from the year 2000 to till February, 2013. The study attempts to measure authorship pattern, degree of collaboration, Year wise distribution of articles and corresponding citations, domain wise distribution of articles, ranking of authors, ranking of highly cited papers, collaborating countries and such other parameters. The study finds that the major chunk of research is contributed by three joint authors and the trend of collaborative research is rightly at its peak. STEM Librarians at Syracuse University actively participate throughout the scientific publication process. This chapter will outline points in the process where librarian involvement is applicable and beneficial. Librarians Anne Rauh and Linda Galloway will explain how and why it is important to teach tools that organize scientific literature to faculty and students before they begin the writing process. The use of assessment techniques to help inform targeted publication venues will be described. Post-publication, this chapter will describe how to help authors gauge the impact of their work, promote their publications and increase their visibility.

This presentation demonstrates the concepts, techniques and technologies used to develop both the overall mobile content strategy and user experience, as well as the aggregation and delivery of content to both the desktop and mobile form factors from a single content source.

Optimized Still Image Batch Processing Of Special Collections Bound Monographs And Manuscripts Using Dng, Jpeg 2000, And Embedded Xmp Metadata, Michael J. Bennett

Published Works

Batch still image processing is examined in the context of operational bound monographs and manuscripts reformatting. The scaling of overall workflows through the flexible use of Lightroom, Photoshop, VueScan, and Jhove on parametrically-edited raw DNG and batch-rendered JPEG 2000 files is surveyed. Potential gains in processing efficiency, in comprehensive device data capture and preservation, in adaptable master image repurposing capabilities, and in the smoother growth of the required large-scale digital storage capacities that surround such operational conversions are considered.

UConn Library Presentations

The UConn vPC is a collaborative IT project among the UConn School of Business, the School of Engineering, and the University Libraries. The project delivered virtual desktops to UConn students beginning the fall semester of 2011. Students now have access to UConn-licensed applications from their PCs, Macs, and mobile devices from anywhere in the world where they have Internet access. This session discusses both the technology behind the service and the collaboration between the academic units that built a scalable, centralized service. Cross-selling and product bundling are prevalent strategies in the retail sector. Instead of static bundling offers, i.e. giving the same offer to everyone, personalized dynamic cross-selling generates targeted bundle offers and can help maximize revenues and profits. In resolving the two basic problems of dynamic cross-selling, which involves selecting the right complementary products and optimizing the discount, the issue of computational complexity becomes central as the customer base and length of the product list grows.
