A Textual Analysis Of The Role Of Women In Historical Fiction For Young People, Jennifer Youngblut Gassman Jan 2006

A Textual Analysis Of The Role Of Women In Historical Fiction For Young People, Jennifer Youngblut Gassman

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this textual analysis of the role of women in historical fiction written for young people was to identify whether the portrayal of women in contemporary historical fiction varies from pre-Feminist era historical fiction. This researcher’s goal was to seek examples and compare the portrayal of women in novels written before and after 1970. Twenty-four novels were selected from historical novel bibliographies. Twelve novels written before 1970 and twelve written after 1970 were read and any identified patterns were included in the sorting process. Research questions seeking resolution were: how were women portrayed in historical fiction written for …

A Design-Based Research Strategy To Promote Scalability For Educational Innovations, Jody Clarke-Midura, C. Dede, D. J. Ketelhut, B. Nelson, C. Bowman Jan 2006

A Design-Based Research Strategy To Promote Scalability For Educational Innovations, Jody Clarke-Midura, C. Dede, D. J. Ketelhut, B. Nelson, C. Bowman

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This article offers insights into how the design of innovations can enhance their “scalability”: the ability to adapt an innovation to effective usage in a wide variety of contexts, including settings where major conditions for success are absent or attenuated. We are implementing the River City MUVE curriculum, a technology-based innovation designed to enhance engagement and learning in middle school science, in a range of educational contexts. Based on our studies of these scaling up activities, we offer examples of design strategies for scalability and describe our plan to develop a “scalability index.”

Methodological Challenges For Identifying And Coding Diverse Knowledge Elements In Interview Data, Victor R. Lee, Moshe Krakowski, Bruce Sherin, Megan Bang, Gregory Dam Jan 2006

Methodological Challenges For Identifying And Coding Diverse Knowledge Elements In Interview Data, Victor R. Lee, Moshe Krakowski, Bruce Sherin, Megan Bang, Gregory Dam

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper, as part of a symposium on the analysis of clinical interview data and the development of a framework for analyzing students' intuitive science knowledge, identifies and discusses methodological challenges encountered when specifying the knowledge elements and resources are invoked dynamically during a clinical interview. Drawing from interviews with middle school students about the seasons and an analysis of knowledge in terms of 'nodes', two classes of problems are identified: those associated with identification of nodes and those associated with their application as codes to a transcript-based data corpus. We posit that these challenges are common ones associated with …

The Movement For Open Access Law, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2006

The Movement For Open Access Law, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

My claim in this contribution to this important symposium is that the law and legal scholarship should be freely available on the Internet, and copyright law and licensing should facilitate achievement of this goal. This claim reflects the combined aims of those who support the movement for open access law. This nascent movement is a natural extension of the well-developed movement for free access to primary legal materials and the equally well-developed open access movement, which seeks to make all scholarly journal articles freely available on the Internet. Legal scholars have only general familiarity with the first movement and very …

Harry Potter: A Comparison Of The Characters, Themes, Setting And Plot With The Arthurian Legend, Diane L. Engbretson Jan 2006

Harry Potter: A Comparison Of The Characters, Themes, Setting And Plot With The Arthurian Legend, Diane L. Engbretson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to attempt to predict if Harry Potter is a re-creation of King Arthur and if the ending of the Potter stories will mirror that of King Arthur. This research focused on one series of King Arthur books written by Howard Pyle and the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling. A content analysis chart was created and implemented to compare the two series of books. A content analysis chart was completed, first of the King Arthur series and then of the Harry Potter series. This archetypal chart was used to map the characters, themes, …

On The Go With Chm 125, Econ 210, Phys 218, And Biol 205: Coursecasting At A Large Research University, Jeremy R. Garritano, David B. Eisert

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Considered one of the larger and broader coursecasting programs currently in the United States, Purdue University's BoilerCast system offers many challenges and opportunities for faculty, staff, and students on and off campus. The ease of accession of audio course lectures online and their integration with RSS feeds allow students to review lectures before exams, can supplement in-class talks, and even let faculty critique their own lectures. However, a podcasting or coursecasting service is not without its tribulations. For those exploring the possibilities of coursecasting, this paper will discuss the ongoing costs and benefits of a large-scale coursecasting system, lessons learned, …

Government Information Research, Susie Skarl Jan 2006

Government Information Research, Susie Skarl

Library Faculty Research

Prior to the mid-1990s, much government information lay outside the mainstream of library catalogs and core indexes and, consequently, was greatly underutilized. Finding government information required negotiating cumbersome search tools, specialized indexes, and separate call number systems. By the end of the 1990s, government information had become more accessible on the World Wide Web. Although the Internet has made searching and finding government information less taxing for patrons, most still require instruction from library staff in order to satisfy their needs in the best possible manner.

A Content Analysis Of Public Elementary School Library Media Program Websites In The State Of Wisconsin, Faye I. Reinhart Jan 2006

A Content Analysis Of Public Elementary School Library Media Program Websites In The State Of Wisconsin, Faye I. Reinhart

Honors Program Theses

An article written by Blumbach in 2005 suggested the 28 criteria are "essential elements for any school library media web site." The criteria are named closely similarly to the categories in the current study. Overall, the pattern in Wisconsin is that libraries are not living up the criteria suggested in the field of research for quality website presence. Due to the evidence that a school library media program is strongly influenced by its Internet presence, the purpose of this research was to perform a content analysis of selected public elementary school library media center websites in the state of Wisconsin. …
