Click Or Poll Your Way To An Interactive Library Instruction, Sarah Gewirtz

Libraries Staff Publications

We want to make a positive impression but also make sure they learn something during their short time. How can we do all of that? Easy! Use Clickers (Audience Response Systems) or an online version like PollEverywhere.com. During this presentation, Sarah discussed the questions she’s asked and responses she’s gotten from classes she’s taught using both Clickers and PollEverywhere.com. She discussed feedback from each …

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Today’s first year college students arrive on campus underprepared for the academic demands that await them. Despite the dedicated efforts of high school librarians, research continues to illustrate that students lack basic information literacy skills crucial to their academic success in higher education. In this session high school and academic librarians will explore this issue with participants to identify key deficits in students’ 21st Century Skills.

The presenters will share their insights on college professors’ expectations and offer best practices for educating tomorrow’s college students. Presenters will provide ideas for lesson plans and assessment; actual college assignments will be shared.

Best Practices For Hiring Academic Librarians With Faculty Status And Rank, Christopher Shaffer Oct 2011

Best Practices For Hiring Academic Librarians With Faculty Status And Rank, Christopher Shaffer

The Southeastern Librarian

When library school students graduate, their primary goal frequently is to find a job; they may have a preference for a position as a public librarian, academic librarian, or school media specialist, but most important is finding gainful employment in order to put food on the table. The person responsible for hiring academic librarians must attempt to discern, based on a résumé and a relatively brief personal interview whether a candidate is capable of performing the basic tasks of being a librarian, interacting with faculty, guiding students, and performing their duties as a member of the academy. Are We There Yet? Results Of A Gap Analysis To Measure Lis Students' Prior Knowledge And Actual Learning Of Cultural Competence Concepts, Kafi D. Kumasi, Renee Franklin Hill

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper reports on the preliminary results from a pilot study conducted to examine library and information science (LIS) students' perceptions of their level of preparation for becoming culturally competent LIS professionals. Students participated in an electronic survey, which contained a Likert Scale measuring three areas of cultural competence: self awareness, education, and interaction. A gap analysis technique was employed to detect discrepancies between students' prior knowledge and actual learning relative to cultural competence. This article discusses student-reported gaps in knowledge for the section of the questionnaire on "Education." Students indicated that all of the concepts introduced in this section …
