Exercising Research Skills: An Information Literacy Boot Camp For Religious Studies Graduate Assistants, Stephanie Shreffler, Heidi Gauder

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

Instructional librarians at the University of Dayton collaborated with a religious studies graduate program to offer a three-day information literacy workshop, or “boot camp,” to the program's graduate research assistants. The graduate program had found that the assistants' research skills did not meet the expectations of their faculty mentors, and the workshop sought to address these deficiencies. With input from the religious studies faculty, the workshop focused on catalog and database searching, Boolean logic, primary sources, and the Chicago citation style. The librarians incorporated active learning exercises into each workshop session. Assessment of the workshop suggested that the assistants gained …

Voices Of Notators: Approaches To Writing A Score--Special Issue, Teresa L. Heiland

Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)

In this special issue of Voices of Notators: Approaches to Writing a Score, eight authors share their unique process of creating and implementing their approach to notating movement, and they describe how that process transforms them as researchers, analysts, dancers, choreographers, communicators, and teachers. These researchers discuss the need to capture, to form, to generate, and to communicate ideas using a written form of dance notation so that some past, present, or future experience can be better understood, directed, informed, and shared. They are organized roughly into themes motivated by relationships between them and their methodological similarities and differences. …

Moving Toward A Reparative Archive: A Roadmap For A Holistic Approach To Disrupting Homogenous Histories In Academic Repositories And Creating Inclusive Spaces For Marginalized Voices, Lae'l Hughes-Watkins

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

In 2013, Kent State University’s Department of Special Collections and Archives launched the Black Campus Movement (BCM) Collection Development project to acknowledge the imperfection of past collection development practices that resulted in a scarcity of documentation from historically underrepresented communities. The department ventured to strengthen its holdings by acquiring records relating to the university’s rich, multilayered and diverse narratives, specifically the narratives of black student activism, 1968–1971. The Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970, resulting in the death of four white students, changed the trajectory of the Vietnam War and introduced a new discourse into the predominately white antiwar …

Designing Effective Legal Research Rubrics: The Foundation For Successful Assessment, Carol A. Watson, Katie Hanschke, Zanada Joyner

Presentations

Increasingly librarians are teaching many, if not all, of the legal research courses at their law schools. Most librarians are not experts in education assessment design. Assessment with rubrics creates a learner centric environments in which instructors objectively evaluate student progress and assures that students receive consistent and meaningful feedback. Rubrics provide both students and instructors with a clear understanding of whether learning outcomes have been achieved. Guided by the instructors' experience and an in-depth review of the literature law librarians will be exposed to the best practices when creating rubrics including alignment with the course goals and instructor expectations.

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library-Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull Mar 2018

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library-Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull

Libraries

While evidence continues to build that information literacy (IL) is taught across university and college curricula at all student levels (Junsbai, Lowe & Tagge, 2016), challenges connecting IL to those curricula in meaningful ways persist (Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Klomsri & Tedre, 2016; Bombaro 2013). Blending IL into social work education beyond traditional one-shot library sessions also remains a challenge as evidenced by the dearth of literature demonstrating sound instruction and assessment practices of IL in social work programs (Bausman & Ward, 2016; Kayser, Bowers, Jiang, & Bussey 2013; Johnson, Whitfield, & Grohe, 2011; Ismail, 2009; Brustman & Bernnard …

Library Publishing Curriculum

Long the primary role of university presses, faculty’s long-form scholarship is now being created and disseminated with the help of many types of publishers. Whether it’s an edited volume, a symposium collection, conference proceedings, or a single-authoredwork, most successful long-form scholarly texts are organized around an expected set of elements. Understanding the need for and purpose of each of these elements ensures that the publisher can help an author create an effective work and the reader can navigate the materials successfully. Additional common goals for long-form programs include working with an author to write a well-structured publication containing a coherent …

Sometimes a text-based format will not serve an author’s need –time for a more unique presentation! When does material and research require a multi-modal product? How do you help the author create the final product, be it a database, a video, an interactive work, a website, or an online course? What kinds of files can you accept, publish, and preserve? What material requires any kind of review, and how is that review validated? Who will maintain the site and who gets credit for the creation? Do you have access to a digital humanities center or humanities librarian, and if so …

Many universities have formal programs addressing textbook affordability. These may include committees charged with investigating the current landscape and communicating with faculty to encourage affordable options; open textbook programs supported by the library, institution, or state; or a university-press program supporting faculty in the creation of affordable course readers. How do you identify opportunities to best offset student costs with quality affordable textbooks?
