"This paper examined the perceptions of convicted sex offenders and their interactions with law enforcement over time. Specifically, we focused on how formal interactions influenced stigma management and self-identity transformation. For decades, scholars have proposed that identities and behaviors often result from interactions with others. Sex offender registration and notification laws force interactions between registrants and police agents for years, if not a lifetime. Given that desistance from sex offending is dependent on prosocial identity transformation, we analyzed interviews with 63 registrants to uncover how interactions with police promote or inhibit identity transformation over time. "The wellbeing of prison officers has primarily been understood as a function of contextual variables such as their workplace and the nature of their role. Yet the research suggests the officers’ gender and tenure are the only statistically significant predictors of wellbeing for this population (Butler, Tasca, Zhang, & Carpenter, 2019). These findings suggest that variables at the person level may be more important than contextual variables. Focusing on the United States, this paper examines the impact of military service for the cohort of individuals that have experienced the social factors that characterize emerging adulthood as a unique stage in the life course. We argue that military service, as a turning point, may act differently in contemporary times compared to findings from past research. This difference is driven by changes in military service, the draft versus volunteer military service, and the prevalence of emerging adulthood. Some urban spaces are associated with disproportionate numbers of criminal events, while other areas are relatively free from disorder and crime. The relationship between urban space and crime concentration has received increased attention in recent years, with the location quotient frequently presented as a tool to identify and quantify such concentration. This measure has several limitations, with one significant concern surrounding the choice of denominator with which to standardize local and global rate calculations. The dominant approach to addressing violence against women in Egypt today is carceral, or relying on the punitive instruments of the state to achieve justice (most visibly represented by the prison and police). While carceral responses are perhaps unsurprisingly advocated by state feminism, they are also promoted by what would typically be described as anti-state actors. This paradoxical entanglement takes place during what I identify as the 'carceral moment', a period marked by the intensification of political and social repression and during which incarceration appears more readily available as a solution to remedy perceived problems of governance. This study analyzes the types and volume of personally identifiable data released on the Internet via two hundred public governmental websites for law enforcement, criminal courts, corrections, and criminal record repositories in each state. We find that public disclosures often include information valuable to the personal data economy, including the full name, birthdate, home address, and physical characteristics of arrestees, detainees, and defendants. Corruption is a widely acknowledged problem in the health sector of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet, little is known about the types of corruption that affect the delivery of pathology and laboratory medicine (PALM) services. This review is a first step at examine PALM corruption risks.

METHODS

We performed a critical review of medical literature focused on health sector corruption in LMICs. To provide context, we categorized cases of lab-related fraud and abuse in the U.S.

What explains the puzzle of life without parole (LWOP) sentencing in the United States? In the past two decades, LWOP sentences have reached record highs, with over 50,000 prisoners serving LWOP. Yet during this same period, homicide rates have steadily declined. The U.S. Supreme Court has limited the use of juvenile LWOP in Eighth Amendment rulings. Further, death sentences have steeply declined, reaching record lows. Although research has examined drivers of incarceration patterns for certain sentences, there has been little research on LWOP imposition. What is the likely effect of the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic on indigent defense budgets in the United States? To look forward, we look backward. We examine data on county-level spending on indigent defense in Texas during the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Redistributive policies—those which use taxpayer funds to support individuals who themselves pay little or no tax—are particularly susceptible to cuts during times of fiscal stress. Yet our analysis shows indigent defense policy, measured in terms of spending and access to counsel rates, was generally stable through the Great Recession years, even in counties hit hardest. …

Metaphors provide the opportunity to make sense of our experiences and share them with others. The current research qualitatively examined interviews with adoptive parents who had adopted through intercountry or private adoptions. Throughout their interviews, each participant used at least one metaphor in describing their experiences of adopting and raising their child. Overarchingly, the metaphor of “Adoption is a journey” encapsulated parents’ experiences. To demonstrate the journey, parents used metaphors to describe the past, present, and future. Metaphors of the past focused on their child’s trauma and the origin of how the child came to join their family. Metaphors used …

Official Misconduct, Exoneree Race, And The Length Of Time From False Conviction To Exoneration, Blase S. Rokusek

We investigated the interaction of official misconduct (OM) committed by criminal justice officials and race of the defendant in the context of the length of time from conviction to exoneration. We included in our study cases from 1989 to 2020 from the National Registry of Exonerations (NRE), which compiles in its database exonerations accomplished both with and without DNA evidence. Analysis revealed that there does exist an interaction effect of OM and race of the defendant. The timeframe from conviction to exoneration was longest when the case involved both OM and a Black exoneree. Our results indicate that official misconduct …

Although police departments and prosecutor’s o􀁽ces must closely collaborate, their organizational roles and networks, and the distinctive perspectives of their personnel, will inevitably and regularly lead to forceful dialogue and disruptive friction. Such friction can occasionally undermine thoughtful deliberation about public safety, the rule of law, and community values. Viewed more broadly, however, these interactions promote just such deliberation, which will become even healthier when the dialogue breaks out of the closed world of criminal justice bureaucracies and includes the public to which these bureaucracies are ultimately responsible. This chapter explores such organizational interactions and their value.

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์พหุวัฒนธรรมและประชาธิปไตยเชิงวัฒนธรรมผ่านพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัตในพื้นที่มัณฑะเลย์ ประเทศเมียนมา ผลการวิจัยพบว่าในพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัตมีหลายฝ่ายเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้อง ทั้งฝ่ายผู้ปกครองและฝ่ายประชาชนผู้นับถือนัต โดยฝ่ายผู้ปกครองพยายามเข้ามาควบคุมจัดการหรือกระทั่งทำลายความเชื่อเรื่องนัตในบางยุค อันเป็นลักษณะของความรุนแรงทางวัฒนธรรม อย่างไรก็ตามการจัดการควบคุมดังกล่าวก็ไม่สามารถทำได้เด็ดขาดในระดับที่ผู้คนรู้สึกเป็นพวกเดียวกันได้ เอกภาพทางวัฒนธรรมความเชื่อไม่เคยเกิดขึ้น ปรากฏเป็นการต่อรองและการประนีประนอมอยู่เสมอ กระทั่งพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัตสามารถเปิดรับเอาความหลากหลายเข้ามาอยู่ร่วมกัน แม้การเมืองเมียนมาปัจจุบันจะยังค่อนไปทางเผด็จการ แต่พหุวัฒนธรรมที่สะท้อนให้เห็นในพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัต ก็จะเป็นปราการสำคัญในการป้องกันกระแสสุดโต่ง และจะเป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญรองรับกระแสการขยายตัวของเมือง ตลอดจนการพัฒนาประชาธิปไตยของเมียนมาในอนาคต

เบื้องหลังของทุกนโยบายการพัฒนาประกอบด้วยความคิดทางการเมือง ซึ่งรัฐอาศัยอำนาจในการประกอบสร้าง “ความรู้” และ “แนวทาง” การพัฒนาโดยมีเป้าหมายให้เกิดผลดังเช่นที่รัฐต้องการ บทความวิจัยนี้มุ่งศึกษาความคิดทางการเมืองไทยในนโยบายการพัฒนา โดยอาศัยแนวทางการวิเคราะห์วาทกรรมเชิงวิพากษ์ ซึ่งตัวบทที่เลือกมาศึกษา ได้แก่ คู่มือการขับเคลื่อนการพัฒนาประเทศผ่านโครงการไทยนิยม ยั่งยืน ที่รัฐบาลคณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ (คสช.) เป็นผู้ผลิตและตั้งใจถ่ายทอดเนื้อหาดังกล่าวให้ประชาชนผ่านการจัดเวทีในหมู่บ้านและชุมชนก่อนการเลือกตั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2562 ตัวบทดังกล่าวสะท้อนความคิดทางการเมืองของรัฐบาล คสช. ในเรื่อง 1) ประชาธิปไตยไทยนิยมและสากลนิยม 2) การเลือกตั้งคนดี 3) รัฐอุปถัมภ์ และ 4) ประชาชนเป็นผู้รับการอุปถัมภ์ ซึ่งความคิดและปฏิบัติการทางวาทกรรมของรัฐบาล คสช. เป็นการผสมผสานรูปแบบดั้งเดิมและรูปแบบใหม่ ด้วยหวังว่าจะสามารถรักษาความเป็นอำนาจนิยม พร้อมไปกับการได้รับการยอมรับจากประชาชน ทั้งหมดนี้สามารถเข้าใจได้ผ่านบริบททางเศรษฐกิจ สังคมและการเมืองของนโยบายการพัฒนาของไทยตั้งแต่อดีตสู่ปัจจุบัน

บทความนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่ออธิบายเรื่องความเข้มแข็งของระบอบอำนาจนิยมภายใต้การนำของพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีน ผ่านคำถามที่ว่าอะไรเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ระบอบพรรค-รัฐ ดำรงอยู่ได้ในสังคมจีน โดยหลังจากการประกาศใช้นโยบายปฏิรูปและเปิดประเทศในช่วงปลายทศวรรษที่ 1970 ประเทศจีนได้เติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจอย่างก้าวกระโดด ทำให้เกิดชนชั้นกลางและผู้อาศัยในเขตเมืองจำนวนมาก ซึ่งเงื่อนไขทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมที่ว่านี้สอดคล้องกับแม่แบบการพัฒนาไปสู่สังคมประชาธิปไตย แต่ทว่าจวบจนถึงปัจจุบัน พรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีนยังคงอยู่ในอำนาจอย่างมีเสถียรภาพ   บทความนี้เสนอข้อถกผ่านมิติของอำนาจ โดยเสนอว่าสาเหตุที่พรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีนยังคงปกครองประเทศจีนอยู่ได้นั้น เพราะพรรคมีอำนาจเหนือภัยคุกคามที่อาจเกิดขึ้นและกระทบต่อพรรค โดยอำนาจของพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีนนั้นแบ่งออกเป็น 3 มิติ มิติแรกคืออำนาจในการบังคับ ปราบปราม ผ่านการใช้กองกำลังทางการทหารและตำรวจ อำนาจมิติที่สองคืออำนาจในการกีดกันประเด็นที่สุ่มเสี่ยง อันตรายต่อการรักษาสถานภาพเดิมไม่ให้เข้าสู่กระบวนการตัดสินใจ ผ่านการคัดสรรสมาชิกพรรค การปกปิดข้อมูล ข่าวสาร และการโฆษณาชวนเชื่อ และอำนาจมิติที่สามคืออำนาจในการครอบงำทางเลือกของประชาชน ให้หลีกเลี่ยงการกระทำที่ขัดแย้งกับผลประโยชน์ของพรรค

บทความวิจัยเรื่อง “ความรุนแรงต่อผู้สูงอายุ: สถานการณ์ สาเหตุ และการรับมือ” เป็นการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาถึงสถานการณ์ปัญหาความรุนแรงต่อผู้สูงอายุของสังคมไทยในปัจจุบันและสาเหตุของความรุนแรงต่อผู้สูงอายุ รวมถึงแนวทางการสนับสนุนจากเครือข่ายในการป้องกันและแก้ไขความรุนแรงต่อผู้สูงอายุ ดำเนินการใน 5 พื้นที่ ได้แก่ กรุงเทพมหานคร ปทุมธานี เชียงใหม่ หนองบัวลำภู และสงขลา จากกลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งหมดจำนวน 1,215 ราย ผลการศึกษาพบว่าผู้สูงอายุส่วนใหญ่ถูกกระทำความรุนแรงทางด้านอารมณ์และจิตใจมากที่สุด ซึ่งสาเหตุความรุนแรงส่วนใหญ่มาจากภาวะความเครียดจากบุคคลที่เกี่ยวข้องอันสืบเนื่องมาจากปัญหาทางด้านความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลภายในครอบครัวหรือคนใกล้ชิด ซึ่งผู้กระทำความรุนแรงส่วนใหญ่มักเป็นคู่สมรส ลูกหลาน ญาติพี่น้อง คนใกล้ชิดเพื่อน และเพื่อนบ้าน ที่ต้องพึ่งพาอาศัยซึ่งกันและกัน และแนวทางการสนับสนุนจากเครือข่ายในการป้องกันและแก้ไขความรุนแรงต่อผู้สูงอายุ พบว่าผู้สูงอายุส่วนใหญ่จะได้รับการสนับสนุนในด้านของการให้คำปรึกษา แนะนำ ให้กำลังใจจากสมาชิกในครอบครัว เครือญาติ เพื่อนบ้านและทีมสหวิชาชีพ
