This essay has sought to expand the perspective of leadership studies by incorporating the general theory of evolution from the discipline of biology. Evolution has been compared to leadership by other researchers but they have limited themselves to a metaphorical comparison. The primary purpose of this paper was to show that such a distinction was inaccurate when we have a full understanding of general evolutionary theory. Transformational leadership has become one of the dominant paradigms of leadership studies since its fist articulation by James MacGregor Burns in 1978. In recent years, however, this formulation of leadership has come under criticism, to include the critique of its ethical implications. One of the most innovative and provocative of such critiques is on by Michael Keeley in this book, grounded in his close study of the political theory of James Madison. Keeley argues that Madison provides a model of leadership that opposes transformational leadership and that avoids many of its ethical pitfalls. Recently, however, Bechler & Johnson (1995) made an initial attempt to identify a relationship between perceptions of leadership and perceptions of listening skill. Their study found a significant positive correlations between member perceptions of who was leading the group and member perceptions of which members were the best listeners. “Those subjects ranked as most like a leader were also typically ranked as good listeners…Individuals perceived to be leading the groups were most commonly believed to be listening to the groups” (Bechler & Johnson, 1995, pp.82-83). Formal leadership education is the latest craze at the secondary level of education. Private high schools have for years stated in their brochures that their school produces leaders. However, only recently are these same schools clearly articulating a more formal structure in leadership education. While children are growing up, their families play a large role in shaping their ideas, beliefs, values and behaviors. Certainly, the development of an individual's leadership style is a continuous process which does not end when one becomes independent of the family. However, the impact of this early influence must be assessed.
