Stress And Burnout In Nurse Leaders, Laura E. Johnson, Kiersten J. Nichols, Jayme A. Sakhitab
Stress And Burnout In Nurse Leaders, Laura E. Johnson, Kiersten J. Nichols, Jayme A. Sakhitab
Nursing Masters Papers
Problem: Nurse leaders commonly experience stress and self-reported burnout. The associated negative consequences are compelling, yet few studies to date consider the nurse leader population. Stress is “a multidimensional phenomenon determined by a person’s perceptions and may be assessed as harm, loss, threat, or challenge” (Udod, Cummings, Care, & Jenkins, 2017a, p. 160). Burnout is a lack of professional fulfillment caused by emotional, physical, and psychological stress (Nurse Burnout, 2019). Drivers are associated and contributing factors which lead to stress and self-reported burnout.
Purpose: The purposes of this correlational study are to (a) identify drivers from the literature and …
Connecting The International Experience, Michelle Wong
Connecting The International Experience, Michelle Wong
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of this study was to explore how relationships between international students and study abroad returnees can further global education throughout the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) community. My overarching question was: how can I, as an advisor at the International Students and Programs Office (ISPO), create a program that fosters cross-cultural interaction between international students and study abroad returnees? A secondary question was: how can these interactions help cultivate the intercultural competencies of both parties? Using O’Leary’s Cycles of Action Research as a guiding framework, I conducted one pre-cycle, a needs assessment, and three cycles of data …

Student leadership positions such as Orientation Leaders are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the incoming diverse population of students attending an institution each year, making it essential for professionals within higher education institution to adapt their leadership development curriculum to the students they serve. The purpose of my action research project was to explore my work as the Orientation Graduate Assistant as I assist in creating and facilitating the leadership training …

Theses & Dissertations
To fill a gap of leadership research in the public sector, conducted in a municipal government department, in a southwestern United States city of over 1,000,000 residents, this quantitative survey research examined the relationships between 66 observer ratings (response rate of 46.15% from a sample of 143 participants) of a department director’s level of the Big Five personality traits, measured by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3), and transformational leadership as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X (MLQ 5X). Demographic data was collected to examine potential relationships between the NEO-FFI-3 and MLQ 5x ratings. To compare the self-other ratings, the …

I focused specifically on Prosthetics and Orthopedics, but these theories can be applied to other branches of Biomedical Engineering and extend …

Adolescent Spiritual Formation: Practical Theology As A Filter For Youth Ministry, Jeremy Smith
Adolescent Spiritual Formation: Practical Theology As A Filter For Youth Ministry, Jeremy Smith
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
There seems to be a disconnect between the practice and scholars of youth ministry. Historically, the practice of youth ministry has been overly concerned with method, creating multiple approaches, each with its own inherent shortcomings. Responding to this overemphasis on method, scholars of youth ministry have argued for a more theological framework, assuming that the problem lies within a lack of theological education among youth ministry practitioners. In 2001 youth ministry scholarship made a case to place the field of youth ministry under the discipline of practical theology in hopes of grounding the practice of youth ministry in theology. Over …

The purpose of this project was to produce a guiding document of virtues that represented the type of Christ-like character qualities desired in youth at Cookeville First United Methodist Church. The six virtues chosen in the document represent a comprehensive vision for character growth over the course of students’ time in the program. For our purposes, this story is generally stated as the story of Jesus at first but is then seen as best …

This informs an expanded context-definition of leadership for which examples of leadership characteristics and proficiencies from a complex systems perspective are presented.
Part 2 is presented as a separate essay. It discusses the …

Although retirements are expected as part of a lifecycle within organizations, the Silver Tsunami potentially removes a large amount of valuable expertise and intellectual capital from public agencies. The implications of this wave of retirements not only include an inadequate number of senior executives in public service, but also the loss of institutional knowledge that has been acquired within agencies over time. This research will explore the implications of the wave of retirements of baby boomers from senior executive roles within the public sector, and analyze what Santa Clara County local government agencies are doing to prepare and develop the …

Essays On Corporate Social Responsibility And Strategic Leadership, Li Tong
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation two issues related to business ethics: how corporate social responsibility (CSR) affects the value creation in an acquisition and how corporate decoupling behaviors are driven by the CEO narcissism, consisting of two essays. The first essay examines how target corporate social responsibility affects the economic gains for acquirers, as reflected in market reaction to acquisition announcement, from two distinct perspectives: stakeholder preservation versus stakeholder appropriation. The stakeholder preservation perspective suggests that positive market reaction to an acquisition stems from potential new value creation by honoring implicit contracts and maintaining good relationships with target stakeholders. By contrast, the stakeholder …

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe leadership experiences of rural school principals in K-12 schools in culturally-cohesive communities in Alabama. Three theories guiding the study were Blanchard’s situational leadership theory (Hersey & Blanchard, 1977) as it described different leadership styles and directing others to desired results, Dweck’s mindset theory (Dweck, 2006) by considering how fixed mindset was the inability to think beyond a situation and growth mindset focused on the process of learning and development, and Burns’ and Bass’s (1978) transformational leadership theory in how principals display leadership. Rural principals’ experiences were defined as ways they …

Storytelling For Fundraising: Assessing The Impact Of Personal Stories On Donation Behavior, Kate Mccarthy
Jepson School of Leadership Studies Research Symposium
In fundraising, some nonprofits have sought to channel the power of personal stories by including them in appeal letters. Are stories an effective tool in soliciting donations? In this study, participants read one of three appeals from an unnamed abortion fund. Two conditions contained a personal story, either an “unapologetic” or a “safe, legal, rare” narrative, about a woman who underwent an abortion; one condition did not include a story. Participants were then asked questions regarding the appeal and the organization before being given a “bonus” dollar, and offered the option of donating a portion of that to an abortion …

Liking And Listening: Impression Formation And Information Processing In Presidential Debates, Lauren H. O'Brien
Jepson School of Leadership Studies Research Symposium
Participants were asked to watch, listen to, or read a transcript of the opening statements from the first presidential debate of 1960 between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Afterwards, participants were asked to recall three moments in the debate, both list and identify quotes from each candidate, and indicate impressions of each candidate’s personality. My research aimed to see if there is any connection between debate format, how participants process information, and how participants form impressions of a leader’s personality. I hypothesized that participants who listened to the debate would best process information. While there were few situations where …
