The Dark Side Of Servant-Leadership, Thomas W. Camm

In Servant Leadership, Greenleaf (1977) asked: Who is the enemy responsible for the mediocre performance of so many institutions? “The real enemy is fuzzy thinking on the part of good, intelligent, vital people, and their failure to lead. . .” (p. 45). Part of this fuzzy thinking is the failure to recognize what Jung called the shadow aspect of who we are. For this paper, I will look at three ways this can appear: the dark side (naïve/unaware), the darker side (paternalistic), and the darkest side (authoritarian).

The people of the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming view entrepreneurship as the key to future survival. Entrepreneurship, they say, will encourage more people to shop locally, while attracting more outside dollars into the community. Locally owned businesses are important for a community that faces such challenges as a 54% unemployment rate, 28% living on per-capita payments to tribal members, and 62% living below the poverty level. While there are many opportunities for economic development, the twist is finding the right strategy and maintaining traditional cultural and tribal values that are important to the two tribes that share this reservation.

The inconvenient truth about servant-leadership is that it begins with us and then compels one to build meaningful relationships with organizational members. Leading well doesn’t just determine what a leader does, but how they do so (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). When practicing servant-leadership, one is required to access the interior of a person and meet and serve them there. No loitering around the exterior of their lives, their emotions, their fears, or their challenges; rather, it is an inside job, which takes effort, intentionality and consistency.

Robert K. Greenleaf (2002) effectively embodied lesser known servant-leadership aspects such as prophesy, foresight, and the will to better society, often through personal and collective sacrifice. In his telling essay on Robert Frost’s poem “Directive,” Greenleaf showed not only his strengths in linear thinking, but his uncommon and profound gifts with regard to nonlinear, mystery-based, and more circular aspects of wisdom. This type of wisdom is more readily associated with poets and painters than business practitioners or social scientists.

Beloved Indian poet and playwright Rabindranath Tagore once penned the immortal words: “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” The 2018 Malayalam language film Njan Prakashan (lit. “I am Prakashan”), with English subtitles, brings to life Tagore’s words in a story bursting with the universal themes of humor, joy, empathy, tragedy and, ultimately, rebirth.

The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore the leadership experiences of male military spouses who serve as primary caregivers in the home. The primary objective of this research was to illuminate the voices of male military spouses from the various branches of military service to share their lived experiences and with specific regard to their leadership qualities. The goal of this research is to allow male military spouses to use their own words to describe their leadership experiences and to understand the context of that leadership inside the military culture. Problem

Due to long-standing religious, racial, and cultural tensions, a complex and challenging relationship exists between Jews and Christians. The resulting breach isolates and separates these two faith groups from each other. Consequently, they struggle to interact and engage in meaningful dialogue, which could repair the breach and lead to forgiveness and reconciliation. Dialogue bridges the gap between Jew and Christian allowing them to meet in the third space—the liminal space of the Jewish cemetery in Poland. Jews and Christians may deal with the evil of the past through what researchers term as "loving acts."

Violence against children (VAC) is a global problem with significant consequences. Recognizing the need to better understand the problem of VAC in Côte d’Ivoire (CI), the government of CI recently completed a survey on violence against children. The recent data will support an evidence-based national action plan for the prevention of VAC. Research shows that initiatives tackling specific problems will only be as successful as the community’s readiness to take action.
