How Leaders Use The Construct Of Culture To Influence Change Resistance: A Study Of A Planned Change Initiative In A Combined Government And Military Organization, Derek R. Noether Edd

Dissertations

The construct of organizational culture has been used to interpret various aspects of organizational life, including organizational leadership and organizational change. The literature indicates that leaders can influence organizational change by attending to and modifying an organization's cultural dimensions. Much of this literature, however, is theoretical and speculative, and the empirical work that does exist has focused mostly on business. The purpose of this case study was to develop an understanding of how leaders in a combined government and military organization used the notion of culture during a two-and-a-half year planned change initiative. The study explored the strategies and mental …

The Courage To Change: Striving For Magnet Hospital Recognition, Janet M. Jones Edd May 2005

The Courage To Change: Striving For Magnet Hospital Recognition, Janet M. Jones Edd

Dissertations

In the ever-changing environment of health care, good leaders are of utmost importance to the effective functioning of the hospital. Leadership in the hospital setting requires innovativeness and courage. This means the passion to discover, create and experience the unknown. Until recently why some hospitals attract and retain good nurses while others do not was unknown. The magnet hospital concept identified attributes that supported the professional practice of nursing which, in turn increased nurse recruitment and retention. The objective of this study was to compare Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) perceptions of their innovativeness and leadership …

To Be Or Not To Be: Status Of Guam's Middle Schools, Judith T. Won Pat Edd May 2005

To Be Or Not To Be: Status Of Guam's Middle Schools, Judith T. Won Pat Edd

Dissertations

In an effort to help middle school programs respond to the unique developmental needs of their students, in 1995 the National Middle School Association issued their influential list of twelve essential characteristics for a developmentally sound middle school. Although this paper spawned a significant amount of research regarding the importance of these essential characteristics, there has been little, if any, research in the last decade describing the extent to which these characteristics have been implemented in middle schools outside of the continental United States. To remedy this situation, this study surveyed all 471 middle school teachers on Guam as well …

Omesubel A Ureor: Workforce Development In Palau From Pre-Contact To 1999, Patrick Ubal Tellei Edd

Dissertations

After being a ward of many nations for over 250 years, the Republic of Palau gained its independence on October 1, 1994. One of the many challenges facing this young nation is the workforce preparation of its people to engage in nation building. After many years of being subjugated by foreign governments, the people have developed a taste of material consumerism. This has driven people away from their subsistence way of life in favor of a market driven economy which calls for infrastructure development that cannot be accomplished if there is a nonexistent skilled workforce to undertake this challenge. To …

Asian American Females In Educational Leadership In K-12 Public Schools, Dina Castillo Pacis Edd May 2005

Asian American Females In Educational Leadership In K-12 Public Schools, Dina Castillo Pacis Edd

Dissertations

The research on educational leadership has largely excluded the perspectives of women and minorities. As school age populations become increasingly diverse, the need for principals from diverse backgrounds also increases. However, the research data shows that females and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in educational leadership positions. In an effort to address the lack of minority females in educational leadership, particularly Asian American females, more research needs to be conducted on their perceived barriers to upward mobility, as well as their perceptions of educational leadership. Only when the voices of Asian American female minority administrators are heard, will they be better …

The survey was then administered to 300 federal middle managers and supervisors (150 male and 150 female). Participants' grade level ranged from general schedule (GS) GS-12 to GS-15. Of …

Re-Imagining Power In Leadership: Reflection, Integration, And Servant-Leadership, Karel S. San Juan Jan 2005

Re-Imagining Power In Leadership: Reflection, Integration, And Servant-Leadership, Karel S. San Juan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Leadership is imbued with the idea of power. Think about leadership, and soon after you will think of power as well. This is because power is a compelling aspect of leadership. Think about power-and you evoke several images. Power is a different and an independent phenomenon. It surrounds our everyday life in a ubiquitous and pervasive way-physical power, solar power, social power, spiritual power, and so on. It elicits impressions of greatness and grandeur, strength and stamina, energy and engagement. It evokes ideas like force, control, persuasion, authority, influence, impact, and charisma.

A Journal Of Devotion, Larry Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

With the publication of this first academic journal devoted to research and writing on servant-leadership, we hope to take significant step forward in the ongoiong evolution of servant-leadership. Much as the burgeoning field of philanthropic studies was some ten or fifteen years ago, the study of servant-leadership is now poised for a similar kind of development. The International Journal of Servant-leadership, a collaboration between Gonzaga University and The Greenleaf Center, has been established to help lead the way in the further development of servant-leadership as a legitimate and powerful field for study, research, teaching and publishing.

Servant-Leadership, A Way Of Life, Shann Ferch Jan 2005

Servant-Leadership, A Way Of Life, Shann Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

What is it about a child's voice, a child's smiling face and exuberant laughter, that reminds us of the mystery and wonder of existence? Something of freedom is found in that smile, and peace, the simple unburdened essence of being young and alive. Yet so often this essence is clouded in adulthood, becoming increasingly more elusive, and for some seemingly unreachable. At times our lives can be so filled with rapid motion, entanglements, pressure, and confusion we find it difficult to breathe.

Film Review: “Thus Have We Made The World”: Using The Film The Mission To Explore The Choice For Servant-Leadership, Michael Lieberman Carey

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Michael Lieberman Carey finds the 1986 film The Mission (directed by Roland Joffe) to present "Robert Greenleaf's concept that 'the great leader is seen as a servant first, and that simple fact is the key to his greatness,'" and "illustrates [Spears'] ten characteristics of servant-leadership," listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, committment to the growth of people, and building community.

Servant-Leadership In A Changing Culture: Reflection On The Brazilian Context, Robson Marinho Jan 2005

Servant-Leadership In A Changing Culture: Reflection On The Brazilian Context, Robson Marinho

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As in any other society, the principles of servant-leadership have an incontestable appeal to Brazilian corporate environment, but the term servant may not sound terribly attractive to people from the Brazilian culture. In fact, this is one of the struggles we face when spreading the servant-leadership philosophy among business corporations and Brazilian society at large. Recently, in a class on Leadership Teamwork for Masters students at University of Santo Amaro, in Sao Paulo, I strategically decided to explore the servant-leadership concept as the foundation of the course, so I outlined the topic on the course syllabus. As I introduced the …

Servant-Leadership And The Art Of Teaching, Joshua B. Powers, John W. Moore Jan 2005

Servant-Leadership And The Art Of Teaching, Joshua B. Powers, John W. Moore

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

If ever there was an archetypical teacher, it would be Henry Higgins. Adorned in his tweed smoking jacket, with pipes in his pocket, this professor of phonetics displays an unabashed arrogance through much of My Fair Lady. He lectures the cockney Eliza Doolittle on the finer points of diction with the requisite disinterestedness of the research scientist, as if she is little different from the common laboratory rat. Yet, by the end of this memorable play we are entranced by the irrepressible Eliza, who proves Higgins wrong about her true capabilities and his own self-importance, and teaches him a thing …

African American Leaders: Guardians Of Public Values—An Interview With James Joseph, Juana Bordas Jan 2005

African American Leaders: Guardians Of Public Values—An Interview With James Joseph, Juana Bordas

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert Greenleaf saw the rock upon which a good society would be built as people caring for and serving one another. While he noted that in previous times this was largely person-to-person, he expanded this thesis and charged large institutions with the task of building a just and loving society-one that would offer greater creative opportunities to its people. A prophetic and compassionate man, Greenleaf saw the underlying power shift being advocated for by social movements of the late twentieth century as having far-reaching implications and changes for leadership. In a prophetic and alarming statement he proposed that today's privileged …

From Paternalism To The Servant Organization: Expanding The Organizational Leadership Assessment (Ola) Model, Jim Laub Jan 2005

From Paternalism To The Servant Organization: Expanding The Organizational Leadership Assessment (Ola) Model, Jim Laub

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-leadership is becoming an increasingly accepted term in the leadership and organizational literature. When the likes of Peter Senge (1997), Stephen Covey ( 1994 ), Margaret Wheatley ( 1994 ), and Ronald Heifetz ( 1994) give credence to and promote the term, we notice that the idea of servant-leadership is gaining a profound and wide audience. Leaders, writers and researchers who have espoused this idea of leadership have done so for many reasons. Some do so because they believe that it is the right way to view leadership. Those with this view are drawn to servant-leadership because of its moral …

The study was conducted to learn about the experience of Somali women in the workplace relative to their religious practices. The women expressed some alienation but not discrimination in the workplace. This study provides valuable information for leaders and employers who employ Somalis. If the leadership of an organization has knowledge of the typical conflicts that might occur with Somalis in …

The Effect Of Embedded Metacognitive Prompts And Probes On Students’ Awareness In A Multimedia Lesson For Elementary School Students, Wendy Janine Parcel Edd Jan 2005

The Effect Of Embedded Metacognitive Prompts And Probes On Students’ Awareness In A Multimedia Lesson For Elementary School Students, Wendy Janine Parcel Edd

Dissertations

In a study he called The Effect of Embedded Metacognitive Cues and Probes on Use of Learner Control Features in an On-line Lesson for Elementary Students, Watson (2001) found that minimal prompting by an online tutorial increased 5th grade students’ comprehension of how much they understood. While Watson’s findings demonstrated a significant difference in the ability of prompted and non-prompted students to accurately predict their own performance on posttests, actual scores were not greater than those of control students until the results were analyzed by gender. The purpose of this study was to replicate and extend Watson’s study to determine …

Mestizaje And Law Making As Interrelated Processes In Indigenous Identity Formation In Northeastern Brazil: “After The Conflict Came The History”, Jan Hoffman French Jan 2005

Mestizaje And Law Making As Interrelated Processes In Indigenous Identity Formation In Northeastern Brazil: “After The Conflict Came The History”, Jan Hoffman French

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This article explores issues of authenticity, legal discourse, and local requirements of belonging by considering the recent surge of indigenous recognitions in northeastern Brazil. It investigates how race and ethnicity are implicated in the recognition process in Brazil, based on a successful struggle for indigenous identity and access to land by a group of African-descended rural workers. This article argues that the relationship between two processes – law making and indigenous identity formation – is crucial to understanding how the notion of mixed heritage is both reinforced and disentangled. It illustrates how these two processes interact over time and how …

Visionary Thinker And Wordsmith Par Excellence, David E. Wilkins Jan 2005

Visionary Thinker And Wordsmith Par Excellence, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

I was part of a small cohort of Native students, thrilled at the possibility of studying with a man we affectionately, and with some trepidation, referred to as "the Godfather" of Indian politics, policy and law. We called ourselves "Vine's Disciples," not because he was a religious figure, but because we sensed that in having the privilege and opportunity studying with the individual we all considered the most gifted of our time, that we would receive profound lessons in what was required of us as we sought to become active and informed defenders of indigenous nationhood.

What an influence he …
