Building Community In Schools: Servant-Leadership, Restorative Justice, And Discipline Reform, Felix J. Yerace Jan 2014

Building Community In Schools: Servant-Leadership, Restorative Justice, And Discipline Reform, Felix J. Yerace

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the United States, educational quality varies widely across school districts. For decades, many Americans have questioned education quality (Pulliam and Patten 2007; Urban and Wagoner 2009; Webb 2006). The twentieth century saw over thirty national reports and over 300 state and federal task forces look at how schools could improve (Giroux 2004). Despite these efforts, many remain dissatisfied with education in America (Strauss 2012).

What Can Hunter-Gatherers Teach Us About Servant-Leadership?, Richard Leider, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

For most humans living today, it is hard to imagine life without mobile phones and tablets. Every day we all face endless choice points. As our technologies accelerate the speed and frequency of choices coming at us, the faster we feel compelled to respond to each choice. We can be overwhelmed by the emails, tweets, phone calls, text messages, voice mails, all piled on top of the basic life we Iive each day.

Servant-Leadership: A Feminist Perspective, Kae Reynolds Jan 2014

Servant-Leadership: A Feminist Perspective, Kae Reynolds

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

At the heart of this paper is the notion that servant-leadership has potential as a feminism-informed, care-oriented, and gender-integrative approach to organizational leadership. Although there is a significant body of literature on feminist and gender-based interpretations of leadership, the same is not true for servant-leadership. The main contributors to date include Crippen's (2004) narrative inquiry of three women servant-leaders, Eicher-Catt's (2005) feminist critique of servant-leadership, Oner's (2009) and Barbuto and Gifford's (2010) empirical studies of gender differences in servantleadership, and Ngunjiri's (2010) phenomenological study of African women servant-leaders.

The Significance Of Foresight In Vision And Narrative Leadership, Lyna M. Matesi Jan 2013

The Significance Of Foresight In Vision And Narrative Leadership, Lyna M. Matesi

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The purpose of this article is to discuss how foresight fuels vision and is deployed through narrative leadership. The underlying premise is Greenleaf's observation that servant-leaders simultaneously "know the unknowable" and "foresee the unforeseeable" (Greenleaf 2003, 50). In his writing, intellection, imagination, and insight constitute foresight and fuel vision. Similarly, Sashkin (2004) asserted that leader visions are both mentally and behaviorally constructed. I support both Greenleaf's and Sashkin's claims by outlining how mental construction of vision is achieved through foresight and how the behavioral construction of vision is achieved through narrative leadership. I pursue this argument by ( l) summarizing …

Servant-Leadership And Taking Charge Behavior: The Moderating Role Of Follower Altruism, Dirk Van Dierendonck Jan 2013

Servant-Leadership And Taking Charge Behavior: The Moderating Role Of Follower Altruism, Dirk Van Dierendonck

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

When it comes to identifying and meeting the psychological needs of people in an organization, it is servant-leadership that emphasizes this aspect most, more than any other leadership theory. Servant-leadership theory positions the leader as worker-centered, personal growth-oriented, and focused on providing a sense of purpose. This holistic approach to leadership helps people find an intrinsic satisfaction in their job by emphasizing their sense of work as a calling (Correia de Sousa & Van Dierendonck, 2010). It promotes a sense of community, empowerment, and autonomy. It is, therefore, to be expected that the influence of servant-leadership extends beyond the direct …

Oskar Schindler: A Sheep In Wolf's Clothing, Keith W. Carpenter Jan 2013

Oskar Schindler: A Sheep In Wolf's Clothing, Keith W. Carpenter

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

There is a poignant old question that juxtaposes artistic expression with daily reality: "Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?" If art imitates life, then forms of art, and film in particular, are an insightful means for analyzing day-to-day social realities, an instrument for better understanding the world in which we live. But if life imitates art, as both Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw asserted (Adams 1971, 76, 77), then various art forms become a source of modeling and inspiring societal and individual behavior. In the latter case, societies will take an interest in what their art …

The Serving Salesperson: Meeting Customer Needs With Practices Of Servanthood, Daniel H. Mcquiston, Lawrence J. Lad, W. Scott Downey

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I was taught to serve customers and to look to do whatever we could do to meet their needs. We ask them what their biggest challenges are and how we can help them-it goes beyond simply selling products....I try to be a humble servant even in the littlest of ways, calling them, telling them "I'm thinking about you."...People want to have a relationship with others who show a genuine caring attitude for them. -Packaging materials salesperson

Servant-Leadership And Psychological Hardiness, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan Jan 2013

Servant-Leadership And Psychological Hardiness, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The multitude of changes occurring in society increasingly call upon leaders to engage in more participative, servant-oriented approaches to leadership. At the same time, these changes are likely increasing the stress and strain that leaders face on a daily basis. Thus, those who would answer the call to serve and lead face the challenge of withstanding the pressures of the day. This research study explores this challenge by testing the relationship between self-perceived psychological hardiness and servant-leadership within the context of a public institution of higher education. If a strong positive relationship exists between these variables, then this may further …

Coming Home: Servant-Leadership, Men, And The Road Back To One Another, Shann Ray Ferch Jan 2013

Coming Home: Servant-Leadership, Men, And The Road Back To One Another, Shann Ray Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

A primary reason for the general malaise and lack of leadership experienced by many in contemporary society coincides with a loss of the essence of what it means to live in and be developed by a real community, or to encounter what might be called a sense of home. In Greenleaf's terms, the true community is a result of servant-leaders working to meet the most ultimate needs of those with whom they come into contact. The result of meeting such needs is that others grow wiser, more free, more healthy, and more autonomous. In Greenleaf's conception, in a good community, …

Religious Commitment And Servant-Leadership: The Development Of An Exploratory Conceptual Model, Gary E. Roberts, Diane Hess-Hernandez Jan 2013

Religious Commitment And Servant-Leadership: The Development Of An Exploratory Conceptual Model, Gary E. Roberts, Diane Hess-Hernandez

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Irrespective of one's personal religious beliefs, no objective observer can deny that religion exerts a major influence on society and human resources management. The influence of religious beliefs and spirituality on the jobrelated attitudes, behaviors, and performance of employees is an often neglected and underresearched topic across the major organizational sectors (Garcia Zamor 2003; Giacalone and Jurkiewicz 2003; King 2007; Exline and Bright 2011; Byrne, Morton, and Dahling 2011 ). This article strives to develop a conceptual framework for the influence of religious commitment on servant-leader and human resource management work-related outcomes. It will include the main dependent and independent …

Servant-Leadership And Forgiveness-Asking: Two Personal Narratives And A Discussion, Maduabuchi Leo Muoneme, Sj Jan 2013

Servant-Leadership And Forgiveness-Asking: Two Personal Narratives And A Discussion, Maduabuchi Leo Muoneme, Sj

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The leadership methodology that I incorporate in this essay of restorative justice and forgiveness is that of servant-leadership. Robert Greenleaf coined the term servant-leader in the 1960s and 1970s after his involvement with tertiary institutions (Greenleaf 1977, 5). Larry Spears, a close disciple of Greenleaf, extracted the ensuing ten characteristics as essential to the development of servant-leadership: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community (Spears 2004, 8-9). Awareness, persuasiveness, foresight, stewardship, and a desire for healing are qualities that can motivate individuals to seek reconciliation. The purpose of this essay …

Living Justice And Forgiveness In An Organization During A Religious Crisis: A Proposition, Maduabuchi Leo Muoneme, Sj

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In this essay, I will integrate aspects of my family history, national history, local environment history, and organizational history with the purpose of creating a backdrop and historical stage for the problem that needs resolution. The essay will be interwoven with true stories. The organization in question is also my high school alma mater, Federal Government College Jos (FGC Jos), which is located in Plateau State, north central Nigeria. In the milieu of a national history, I will paint a family memoir of how I arrived at Jos and eventually became part of the organization, and I will subsequently describe …

The Organizational Impacts Of Community On Retention And Satisfaction: A Sociological Approach To Servant-Leadership, Kirk D. Young Jan 2013

The Organizational Impacts Of Community On Retention And Satisfaction: A Sociological Approach To Servant-Leadership, Kirk D. Young

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The theme of community has been extensively researched in the sociological field; for many years sociologists have studied how community impacts various factors of the human experience. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the elements of community materialize within, and carry an influence throughout, the arena of leadership. By focusing on the potential that servant-leaders have for establishing community within organizations, it will be seen that the powerful effects thereof can be identified and understood on a scale much smaller than the town, city, or society-entities often the focus of the sociological study. The elements of community …

I believe they are servant-leaders and worthy examples for our youth and adults too.

Put Me In Coach, I’M Ready To Serve: The Servant-Leader As High School Coach, Brian L. Davenport Jan 2013

Put Me In Coach, I’M Ready To Serve: The Servant-Leader As High School Coach, Brian L. Davenport

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The term servant-leadership was first coined in the seventies by Robert Greenleaf (Spears 2004) to describe a leadership theory that placed the emphasis on the led. Since that time it has slowly gained traction (ibid.). However, it is clear that, as a leadership theory, servant-leadership is not yet mainstream in thought and practice. Western (2008) described servant-leadership as an emerging leadership theory, nearly thirty years after it was introduced by Greenleaf. The idea received only passing reference in other overviews of various leadership theories (Jackson and Parry 2008; Northouse 2007; Rost 1991), until Northouse's (2013) sixth edition of Leadership Theory …

The Servant-Mentor: Raising Up The Next Generation Of Servant-Leaders, Nathaniel Pearson Jan 2013

The Servant-Mentor: Raising Up The Next Generation Of Servant-Leaders, Nathaniel Pearson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As a generation nears retirement age, a new generation of leaders prepares to fill the previous generation's place in organizations across the globe. Organizations, both for-profit and not, face the challenge of raising up leaders that possess both the skills and loyalty needed to move forward while maintaining the organization's core values. Contemporaneously, leaders in the twilights of their careers face new questions regarding their lives and legacies. This article begins by providing a brief history of organizational mentoring from both a formal and an informal standpoint. It will then move to thoughts on servant-leadership, creating the foundation for the …

Servant-Leadership... To Teach Or To Awaken?, Paul Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

For the past thirty years, my professional life has focused on better understanding the principles of organizational culture change and the development of leadership capacity within that organization to achieve that change. I have had the good fortune during that time to work with a cadre of highly competent culture change professionals. As a company, we have been able to work in many challenging situations as well as with some of the premier organizations at the time. As satisfied as our clients have been, many of them have partnered with us to make the endeavor even more meaningful. As a …

The Promised Land: Robert Greenleaf, Bruce Springsteen, And Servant-Leadership, Joe Albert, Larry C. Spears Jan 2013

The Promised Land: Robert Greenleaf, Bruce Springsteen, And Servant-Leadership, Joe Albert, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Bruce Springsteen and Robert K. Greenleaf. Two very different men, born into different ages, different environments, different careers. Yet, despite all of their differences, these two men share much in common. Beyond certain superficial similarities-during the 1950s and '60s they lived a short distance from one another in New Jersey-we contend that Springsteen and Greenleaf share a commitment to what has come to be called "servant-leadership," and to a set of characteristics that exemplify servant-leaders. We live in an age of deepening cynicism-a time where a lack of integrity and mistrust abound. Yet, we see in the writings of Robert …

An Inward Journey, Robert K. Greenleaf Jan 2013

An Inward Journey, Robert K. Greenleaf

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

It was my privilege to see a bit of Robert Frost in his last years and, having a feeling for the man as a person, his poetry has a special meaning for me. Philip Booth, in a review, said: "Poems like 'The Demiurge's Laugh,' 'The Road Not Taken,' 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,' 'On a Tree Fallen Across the Road,' 'Desert Places,' 'Come In,' and 'Directive' map, in sequence, the road Robert Frost took into the dark woods, and record the serial ordeal he survived by surrendering himself to the conflicts such poems dramatize." Earlier in Chapter IX, …

Servant-Leadership Applied To Balance World Inequalities And Enhance Global Forgiveness And Restoration, Christian B. Cabezas Jan 2013

Servant-Leadership Applied To Balance World Inequalities And Enhance Global Forgiveness And Restoration, Christian B. Cabezas

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Many years have passed since the end of World War II. In this war that stemmed from hate, unhealthy ambition, and a sense of superiority from within different cultures, millions of lives were lost. Some authors, including a number that were survivors of that war, have documented and described the horrors and atrocities committed. Wiesenthal (1998) raised the dilemma of the possibility of forgiveness to the perpetrators of the massacres committed in this war. Mandela and Tutu (1999), with their experience in South Africa and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, have shown the world that it is possible to forgive …

Forgiveness: A Humble Path For Police To Servant-Leadership, Mark Whitson Jan 2013

Forgiveness: A Humble Path For Police To Servant-Leadership, Mark Whitson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In an attempt to make sense ofthe often difficult task of being called to "protect and serve" society, I begin this article by setting the stage for servant-leadership as vital to the police endeavor. The world is ever-changing. It is becoming more complex and diverse. In an effort to better manage in a multicultural environment, leadership styles are evolving. Researchers Mayer, Bardes, and Piccolo indicated "a growing interest in ethical styles of leadership" (Mayer, Bardes, and Piccolo 2008, 180), and one such leadership style is servant-leadership. I have found in my thirty-two years as a public servant that servant-leadership is …

Servant-Leadership: Creating A Context For Collaboration, Daniel Van Brugge Jan 2013

Servant-Leadership: Creating A Context For Collaboration, Daniel Van Brugge

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Successful educators are chameleons. As chameleons alter their appearance to suit their environment, so too must educators change their strategies and mind-sets to adapt to changes in education (Laymon 2010). While chameleons adapt in order to blend in, educators must adapt to new surroundings to ensure that students are prepared for full entry into society. This entry must result in benefit to student and society. Schools that lack creative and collaborative leadership cannot move their schools forward to adapt as needed (Ozar 2010). There is a high correlation between collaborative school cultures and schools that are able to adapt (Meirink …

Finding The Way Home: The Emergence Of A Servant-Leader Through The Power Of Forgiveness, Mark T. Mccord

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Sitting at a corner table in a small cafe in the Plaka neighborhood of Athens, Greece...Afghanistan seemed to be a million miles away and yet it had followed me there. Like an unseen vapor Afghanistan permeated my every thought, causing words to catch in my throat and my body to be in constant motion. Even then, more than three months after I completed an almost-four year-posting, I could not seem to shake Afghanistan. The result was an awkward silence, and fractured thoughts. My wife sat across from me, the look on her face belying her frustration. She did not know …

Organizational Dissent And Servant-Leadership, Robert F. Sprague Jan 2013

Organizational Dissent And Servant-Leadership, Robert F. Sprague

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Dissent is the choice to disagree and challenge the majority view of those holding positional power (Gordon 2008, 20; Martin 2008, 22). In some organizations, dissenting banter may be part of the process of healthy decision making and innovation. Dissenting conversations may initiate perturbations through the complex interactions of organizational life. With these unexpected interactions, the potential exists for discovering innovative notions that may benefit the organization (Heifetz, Grashow, and Linsky 2009, 145). Within other organizations, dissenting conversation may expose individual organizational members to the risk of being labeled as "out of step," "not a team player," or, worse, "a …

Enhancing Servant-Leadership’S Practice Through Utilization Of Authentic Dialogue, Russell Horton Jan 2013

Enhancing Servant-Leadership’S Practice Through Utilization Of Authentic Dialogue, Russell Horton

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

While the concept of servant-leadership dates back to biblical times more than two thousand years ago (Sendjaya and Sarros 2002, 57), it is only since the 1970s that the ideas of servant-leadership came into modern leadership scholarship through Robert Greenleaf's writings (ibid.). Several authors, including Gergen and Zelleke (2008), Heineman (2006), Russell and Stone (2002), and Tierney (2006) have commented on a societal leadership deficit. Wong and Davey noted that in some cases this manifests itself as a lack of interested or available leaders for a given organizational or community leadership position (Wong and Davey 2007, 1 ). The lack …
