The Leadership Philosophy Of Mary Parker Follett (1868-1933), Judy I. Caldwell, Carolyn Crippen
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The current study used qualitative historical analysis methodology to investigate systematically whether there was evidence of servant leadership competencies in Mary Parker Follett s work and life. Although Follett conducted her work approximately 100 years ago, many of her ideas, such as win-win, power-over versus power-with, and conflict resolution, would be considered leading edge today. In fact, Warren Bennis (2003) argued that, Just about everything written today about leadership and organizations comes from Mary Parker Follett s writings and lectures (p. 178) and Peter Drucker (2003) referred to her as the prophet of management (p. 9).

Funeral directors have labeled the typical American society a death-denying culture. For example, parents may try to shield children from the death event because of previous occurrences with death and the funeral home (Mahon, 2009). Unfortunately, by protecting others, the death-denying culture is perpetuated (Mahon, 2009). Therefore, it is no surprise that research on funeral directors, and funeral homes, may be underdeveloped. Teachers are facing overwhelming pressure in today s classrooms with core standards, and high-stakes testing (Grissom, Nicholson-Crotty, & Harrington, 2014; Oliver, 2009; Phillips, 2015) resulting in many new teachers decision not to continue in the profession (Hancock & Scherff, 2010). Across the country, 23% of teachers with one to three years teaching experience either left the teaching profession or moved to another school district (Keigher & Cross, 2010).

Many of us want to make a difference in our communities, and in our personal and professional lives. We want to be leaders, bringing change to a world that seems increasingly hungry for transformation. However, one doesn t need to look very far to see examples of those leaders with good intentions, both home and abroad, who get in the way of true change (Ellerman, 2006; Moyo, 2009). Often as not, the source of failure is overemphasizing tangible results while underemphasizing process. If we are to make a sustainable difference, we must focus on accompaniment more than accomplishment.

The socio-cultural and ethnic trauma experienced by victims of human rights violations impact not only post reconstruction activities but also stable governance initiatives as transitional leaders foster national reconciliation in a post conflict environment. Although empirical data supporting the significance of servant-leadership abounds, in practice it is often an intangible art, a carefully executed dance of persuasion and stewardship, of empathy and healing, woven together with grace and humility. Nationally, minority- and women-owned businesses suffer inequity in the construction marketplace(Blanchflower2008; Bloch 2003). In a world where the "good old boys" network can dominate the bidding and awarding of contracts, it may seem overwhelming for a small, private, faith-based nonprofit to seriously consider making an impact on the contract-awarding process. After an analysis of this case study using Spear's (2004) servant-leadership framework, we conclude that the Salvation Army created an impact, with millions in contract dollars going to unlikely candidates to serve its mission and promote community transformation.

While the concept has a number of proponents in the Western world, there is a paucity of research on how acceptable its tenets are for Asian audiences.
