I grew up in the African American Baptist Church. It was there that I would first learn about servant-leadership, although I did not know about Robert Greenleaf or the theory of servant-leadership. What I did know about servant-leadership was from the Holy Bible. Jesus was the ultimate servant-leader, and I saw servant-leadership in action through my Mother.

“I have come to believe that we should insist upon having choices and making decisions for ourselves, rather than having decisions forced upon us by others—no matter how well-intentioned. We should also become powerful advocates for allowing others to have those same rights. Yes, we live in an increasingly interdependent world, and we should take very seriously the careful balancing of personal choice with the greater social good. However, as Gordon Livingston says in his excellent book, Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart: Thirty True Things You Need to Know Now: ‘Nobody likes to be told what to do. It …

Most of the Black community remember where they were the day the news broke that Barack Obama would be the 44th president of the United States. In 2008, I was living in the historic city of Atlanta where I had left behind the dust of an unpaved country road in Russellville, Arkansas. I had wondered then if any of the inhabitants of the predominately White town were somewhere celebrating too. I stared at the screen in the hip Inman Park area with my brother and mixture of folks of different races, and we took to the streets and started shouting …

A school district in the northeast had as its motto for many years, “We serve youth, that youth may learn to serve.” At first glance, the idea of serving youth may seem overly permissive, but this concept of service did not mean waiting on students, but rather creating an environment in which they would be challenged with a focus on their development. It was based on trust among students, teachers, administrators and parents. This investigation is an examination of trust and servant-leadership between teachers and principals in elementary school.

Faculty and staff play a vital role in the success of higher education institutions and thus are critical assets for colleges and universities (Bateh & Heyliger, 2014; Cordeiro, 2010; Ragaisis, 2018). Satisfied faculty and staff enhance organizational effectiveness by improving the learning environment for students, enhancing student performance, and boosting the institution’s public image (Chen, Yang, Shiau, & Wang, 2006; Siddique, Aslam, Khan, & Fatima, 2011) and long-term success (Kebede & Demeke, 2017). Job satisfaction (JS) is increasingly the focus in managing higher education institutions. High JS among faculty and staff improves productivity and cuts costs by reducing underperformance (Webb, …

Robert Greenleaf’s vision of servant-leadership continues to grow, attracting leaders and organizations who resonate with its values (Ferch, Spears, McFarland, & Carey, 2015). Servantleadership scholarship furthers this vision and supports growth in a variety of ways, including: defining and clarifying the essence of servant-leadership, inspiring those who aspire to serve and lead, operationalizing theory through application to organizational settings, creating measures for servant-leadership, and reviewing and synthesizing literature (van Dierendonck, 2010).

The year of 2020 has been most challenging to many people all over the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has left almost no one’s life untouched. Robert Greenleaf’s best test says, “Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or at least, not be further deprived?” During this pandemic, the least privileged in society suffer the most, and various groups of vulnerable people have been marginalized, or pushed further into poverty. Is …

The Women’s Project (TWP) is a Spanish based non-profit organization that hired an external consultant to analyze its organizational conflict between the main leaders and its members. TWP requested consultancy services to present a background case study about the organization through the lens of different philosophical approaches that can pose a series of reflective questions that may be used to initiate an internal dialogue towards practicing conflict resolution and a healing process of self-care. The consultant presents the final report with a background case study called The Women’s Project—A power balance issue at the core of a feminist organization with …

Aquestion was asked of me by the inimitable Nike Imoru, a North Londoner raised in Nigeria, an exceptional casting director, and the first woman and person of color to gain a tenured position in the Theatre Department at Hull in the UK (when she was only twenty-eight.) The question: What is your understanding of the masculine in America? Nike’s presence is water from a deep well. Her direction elicited the following.

Servant-leadership is a broad model that can be applied at many levels and in diverse seasons of one’s life. It is not only limited to an occupation but is relevant to our daily, more personal, social and familial interactions. It often seems that nurturing the less personal relationships with subordinates and co-workers comes more readily than those that are more deeply intimate. There is generally greater vulnerability required to humble oneself and be at the mercy of those who can most deeply wound us. For most, there is at least somewhat of an emotional distance to maintain with employees and …

Did Servant-Leadership Save The Lone Survivor? The Pashtunwali Ethos As A Foundation For The Practice Of Servant-Leadership, X. Jasmine Bordere, Franklin G. Mixon, Jr.
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Servant-leadership is a unique leadership philosophy that, according to Greenleaf (1970, 1977), asserts that an effective leader must first be a servant whose primary goal is to serve the needs and interests of others. Stated differently, a servant-leader supports and develops those among his or her followership (Northouse, 2013). In fact, Stone, Russell, and Patterson (2004) suggest that its central focus on serving followers is what differentiates servant-leadership from other leadership styles. Additionally, servant-leaders express humility, authenticity, interpersonal acceptance and stewardship, and provide directions and empower followers, all of which ultimately leads to organizational success (Dierendonck & Nuijten, 2011; Northouse, …

Do Women Stand Back To Move Forward? Gender Differences In Top Us Business Leaders’ Messages Of Servant-Leadership, Kae Reynolds
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The persistent absence of women in the upper echelons of management is an issue that continues to occupy the concern of governments, businesses, and leadership researchers. Despite a plethora of research to understand the reasons behind the persistent gender leadership gap, actual progress in practice remains minimal, with only 5.1% of Fortune1000 executives being women (Catalyst, 2016). One potential reason behind the perpetual systemic bias against women may be the rigid underlying androcentric philosophies of leading (Eicher-Catt, 2005; Morales, 2019). Servantleadership presents an alternative approach to concept of leading that is gender-integrative (Lehrke & Sowden, 2017; Reynolds, 2011; Reynolds, 2016).

I grew up as white, catholic, American, heterosexual male in a top 5% income household in a safe neighborhood, with some lifealtering, yet not terminal medical issues. Because of this privilege, I was able to focus on my unlimited education to the near exclusion of all else for the first two decades of my life, allowing me to fall in love with learning, with challenging intellectual discussions, with magis, and with cura personalis. Yet as my undergraduate career draws to a close, I find myself questioning how those circumstances affected what I learned, questioning if and how the self-awareness I …

The rooster hasn’t crowed The mister didn’t know For to him, what matters is to work go She has her lantern She has her tools to make the batter For to her, to feed her young is all that matters See as they march to battle They’ll conquer; both great and small don’t belittle For they march on, even in the face of death, so unrattled.

The tedium of personal history, the stories and their repetitions. And then a body stripped of all sense of itself beyond the fundamentals: pain, hunger, whatever primitive needs keep it twisting in the night. Some days you believe you can will her back. Call her name, say key words—huckleberry, plate glass, maple—and she’ll come running like a child from the dark. Even now, ten years after her death, you believe it, fool that you choose to be over the cynic scoffing in ridicule.

I hear the garland steps …. zamzamzamzam. Who is coming? ‘Tis our king our manager. He’s got water in his bowl and towel on his shoulders. Would he wash my legs too? Such reversal! Never, not me a follower! That humbles Him too low! Perhaps such preferred humility is not subordination. He’s got reserved power in his hands and remains first amongst equals.

The purpose of this article is threefold: (a) to describe how spirituality, conceptually informed by servant-leadership, manifests in our teaching practices, (b) to describe how those practices enact support and empathy, which enables our students to succeed in the technical subject of developmental mathematics, and (c) to report our perceptions of student success. We employed a duoethnographic methodology to respond to a common set of questions, highlighting our similarities and differences. In this exchange we explored the setting of our practice, noting disparities between the two-year institutions where we worked. We concluded our experiences, framed through servant-leadership, and described a …

[John Noble and Ralph Lewis co-founded the Greenleaf CentreUnited Kingdom in 1997. Both Ralph and John have a passion for developing servant-leaders and a strong belief in its potential for benefiting organizational life. For most of those years, John Noble served as director and Ralph Lewis served as board chair of Greenleaf-U.K. In November 2019, I sat down with them and conducted the following interview to capture their thoughts on servant-leadership, and their role in encouraging others in the U.K. and beyond, over the past 25 years. —Larry Spears]

The year 2020 has been most challenging for many people all over the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has left almost no one’s life untouched. George Floyd’s death and other race-related incidents also unsettled the world to its core. Ancient lamentation resonates with us today: “How lonely sits the city that once was full of people” (Lamentations 1:1a, NRSV). The statistics help tell the story of this year. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2020) and Johns Hopkins University & Medicine (2020) has confirmed more than 33 million COVID-19 cases worldwide and more than one million deaths in 216 countries. Magpies Recognize Themselves In The Mirror1, Kelli Russell Agodon

The night sounds like a murder of magpies and we’re replacing our cabinet knobs because we can’t change the world, but we can change our hardware. America breaks my heart some days, and some days it breaks itself in two. I watched a woman have a breakdown in the mall today and when the security guard tried to help her what I could see was all of us peeking from her purse as she threw it across the floor into Forever 21. And yes, the walls felt like another way to hold us in and when she finally stopped crying, …

Competing in the global marketplace requires organizations to promote their leaders as servant-leaders by replacing the old rules of traditional leadership with the ‘top of the leadership pyramid. By focusing on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong, servantleadership appears as a promising model to solve problems and promote personal development.

Hospitality in the United States has come a long way since the first recorded “inn” was established in 1607 by Spaniards in what is now modern-day Santa Fe, New Mexico (http://traveltips.usatoday.com/history-hotel-restaurantmanagement-54946.html). Since then, hotels and restaurants have popped up throughout the United States along trade routes and waterways, serving bourgeoning metropolitan centers such as New York City and locations along the Mississippi River.

The Dark Side Of Servant-Leadership, Thomas W. Camm
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In Servant Leadership, Greenleaf (1977) asked: Who is the enemy responsible for the mediocre performance of so many institutions? “The real enemy is fuzzy thinking on the part of good, intelligent, vital people, and their failure to lead. . .” (p. 45). Part of this fuzzy thinking is the failure to recognize what Jung called the shadow aspect of who we are. For this paper, I will look at three ways this can appear: the dark side (naïve/unaware), the darker side (paternalistic), and the darkest side (authoritarian).

Servant-leadership does not and should not stand by itself as a leadership theory or philosophy. It is a new way of living, seeing, and understanding. In this introduction, I am going to focus on one particular field—project management.

The Interior Dictates The Exterior: In Individuals And Organizations, Kevin Parker

The inconvenient truth about servant-leadership is that it begins with us and then compels one to build meaningful relationships with organizational members. Leading well doesn’t just determine what a leader does, but how they do so (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). When practicing servant-leadership, one is required to access the interior of a person and meet and serve them there. No loitering around the exterior of their lives, their emotions, their fears, or their challenges; rather, it is an inside job, which takes effort, intentionality and consistency.

The articles in this volume of the IJSL, like the articles we’ve been honored to publish throughout the journal’s history, are bold, transgressive, and aimed at decentralizing dominant-culture narratives. As people, Shann Ray Ferch, IJSL editor-in-chief, believes that we are specific and universal, beautiful, tragic, met with fracture, met with fusion, triumphant, graceful, traumatized, deeply harmed, lovely, and graceful. The collective presence of the articles published in this volume are guided by similar beliefs, addressing the call given by Seattle writer and National Book Award winner Charles Johnson (Middle Passage) who asks, “How do we portray the racial, cultural, gender, …

Robert K. Greenleaf (2002) effectively embodied lesser known servant-leadership aspects such as prophesy, foresight, and the will to better society, often through personal and collective sacrifice. In his telling essay on Robert Frost’s poem “Directive,” Greenleaf showed not only his strengths in linear thinking, but his uncommon and profound gifts with regard to nonlinear, mystery-based, and more circular aspects of wisdom. This type of wisdom is more readily associated with poets and painters than business practitioners or social scientists.
