The application of servant-leadership in crisis response within Catholic higher education has not been explored. Thus, this essay analyzes the Boland Hall Fire at Seton Hall University to further understand the nuances of servant-leadership in times of crises, and to examine how the principles of servant-leadership can play and cultivate institution-wide healing. By studying artifacts that display how Seton Hall University’s President, administration, and students displayed servant-leadership, this case study emphasizes the role of servant-leadership as an advantagous tool for Catholic higher education leaders in times of crisis.

This article begins by recalling the tragic loss of Giulia Cecchettin, an Italian university student who was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend. The exploration delves into the cultural and societal factors that contribute to violence against women, with an emphasis on the role of personal responsibility in perpetuating these harmful dynamics. It proposes the concept of servant-leadership as a means to counteract male dominance and work towards achieving gender equality. This article explores the nuanced distinctions between persuasion and coercion through Robert K. Greenleaf’s 1977 article “Overcome Evil with Good.” Greenleaf’s comparisons of John Woolman, John Whittier, and Mohandas Gandhi highlight the complexities and consequences of their methods in combating societal evils. Woolman’s gentle persuasion contrasts with Whittier’s fiery abolitionism and Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance, which Greenleaf critiques as coercive and leading to violence. The article examines the controversy sparked by Greenleaf’s views, including reader responses and the impact on his subsequent writings, supported by unpublished manuscripts and correspondence from Greenleaf’s archives. Servant-leadership and academic advising are closely related concepts. Both are concerned with supporting the growth and development of others through intentional influence processes. While some research has been done to explore the conceptual connections between them, little has been done to identify the specific practices of servant-advisors. This article examines the principles and practices of servant-leadership and offers insight regarding specific practices of servant-leadership that relate to academic advising. These include managing one’s motives, relationship building, compassionate communication, and positive coaching.

I am happy to have been invited to add some brief introductory comments to the wonderful paper by Jiying Song and the essay by Robert K. Greenleaf which is included. To start, Song’s paper is a powerful engagement of Robert K. Greenleaf’s essay, “Overcome Evil with Good,” which appeared in the May 15, 1977 edition of Friends Journal. Motivation to serve is conceptualised as an antecedent of servant-leadership but is mostly studied from the leaders’ perspective. Yet, as in any dyadic relationship, exploring the followers’ perspective is crucial, particularly as servant-leadership is an acclaimed follower-centric leadership theory. Hence, this quantitative study is a departure from the norm with a focus on the followers’ motivation to serve (MTS). Premised on the social learning theory, data was collected from 208 respondents in UK private and public organisations using existing and adapted questionnaire surveys that were statistically analysed. In the United States, medical errors, clinical complications and bad outcomes are often managed through a medical-legal system that seeks retributive justice, costing billions of dollars, and leaving patients and healthcare providers with deep emotional wounds and fractured relationships. In contrast, a forgiveness-based approach through Servant-leadership offers patients and medical providers a holistic and restorative justice that acknowledges shared suffering, addresses intrinsic needs, and rebuilds the sacred sense of community once shared between the two groups. Leadership Studies Faculty Scholarship
Native American faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (NAF-STEM) disciplines are historically underrepresented. Creating inclusive academia for Indigenous people that typically live and thrive in rural communities requires insights into their personal, relational, and collective experiences. This study was guided by the Six Rs: relationship, respect, responsibility, relevance, representation, and reciprocity, and was informed by Indigenous Research Methodologies. Twelve NAF-STEM from tribal colleges and non-tribal institutions were asked to share their perspectives and experiences in seven Research Circles. NAF-STEM joined sequential hybrid workshops over seven weeks on how to conduct qualitative data analysis. Authors conducted analysis on the transcripts …

The Generational Journey Of Racial Reconciliation: A Call For Tender Hearts And Continuing Conversation Through A Servant-First Life Of Leadership, Michael T. Von Behren

In the polarized context of today’s society ideological differences on how to address issues of race funnel the angst from riot-stricken streets into school board meetings, sour social media posts, and cancel both careers and friendships. This article examines the critical critique of what has been called third wave anti-racism contrasting this critique with foundational tenants of critical race theory. Servant-leadership is presented as a preferred alternative leading to continuing conversation with tender hearts, which choose to remember the abuses of the past while seeking renewed reconciliation for the sake of future generations.

The purpose of this article is to examine corporate social responsibility (CSR) from a Christian perspective and to study Jesus’ leadership and speculate whether Jesus would have built a CSR pyramid. First, literature is reviewed in the areas of servant-leadership, how Jesus leads, and corporate social responsibility. Self-Forgiveness, Servant-Leadership, And Religious Volunteers In A Juvenile Incarceration Setting, Terri Jane Stewart

Engaging volunteers with religious backgrounds in a juvenile incarceration setting leads to encountering white saviorism (Raypole, 2021, para. 4) and white evangelicalism as expressed through the theology of these volunteers and their racial demographic. Additionally, white evangelicalism used the language and values of Christian nationalism (Boston, 2021). Servant-leadership is an antidote to white Christian nationalism and can balance the inequalities of relationships between volunteer and incarcerated youth. Specifically, self-forgiveness as a practice of servant-leadership and of incarcerated youth can lead to healing from white Christian nationalism and healing from a criminal background.

Servant-Leadership, developed by Greenleaf (1970), is a leadership theory which prioritizes the follower. Greenleaf contended that putting others first as leaders could lead to a change in society. Patterson (2003) developed a model from Greenleaf’s theory which identified several attributes of the Servant-Leadership model including agapao love, humility, altruism, vision, trust, empowerment, and service. In the military, researchers have used Patterson’s construct to conclude that Servant-Leadership does exist in the military. Servant-leadership is increasingly being taught in colleges, universities, and elsewhere. Approaches to teaching vary, but often involve a combination of reading, writing, modeling and practicing it. As college professors, working primarily with graduate students, we have learned over the years that teaching servant-leadership includes a strong effort at modeling it for students. This article explores the inevitable and unchecked conflicts that arise between people and how it can turn into unmanageable rage and harmed relationships. Both instigators and recipients of conflict are ultimately wounded by its accompanying outcomes. By sharing several examples from my life, including the threat of harm from a deadly weapon towards my three-year-old son by his uncle, I demonstrate the hurt caused by conflict and how principles of servant-leaders can help individuals restore positive associations. This study aimed to identify the relationship between senior leaders of Christian non-profit organizations that exhibit servant-leadership and the organizational growth of Christian non-profit organizations. This study focused on the servant-leadership style within Christian non-profit organizations, and the servant-leadership qualities are measured using the Servant-Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ). This quantitative study examined the relationship between senior leaders' servant-leadership and Christian non-profit organizations' growth. The study provides data from Christian non-profit organizations on their organizational growth in the categories of numerical growth, mentorship, and service opportunities in the last three years.

This essay aims to make the case that our dominant concepts of leadership are constraining, thus prohibiting us from meeting the higher meanings residing within leadership, namely love. Blinded by our “existential frustration” (Frankl, 2014, p. 71), we have existed within conceptual notions of leadership that contend for mediocrity and production rather than beauty, goodness, and love (hooks, 2001).
