What is servant-leadership? And what is the connection between this philosophy and set of practices with human rights design, implementation and defense? According to the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership s website, we are talking about a philosophy and set of practices with the aim of enriching the lives of individuals, building better organizations and ultimately creating a more just and caring world. With regards to human rights, we have a variety of definitions, but basically we understand them by the respect for the individual, the assumption that each person is a moral and rational being who deserves …

Imagine, if you will, that you are at dinner with your family. After dinner, you sit at the table discussing the day s events with your wife and the sounds of gunshots ring out. You realize with a sinking feeling that the kids, as they often are after dinner, are outside playing. You run to the yard only to find it empty but alight with hundreds of tracers streaming overhead. Imagine your relief when, after a frantic search, you find your children huddled in the backyard or safe in a neighbor s home. You gather your family to wait out …

In my time both owning and working within companies, I had become familiar with different perspectives and opinions on social responsibility, and had witnessed first-hand the struggles that organizations often experience in attempting to carry out effective strategies.

Learners’ Perceptions Of Servant-Leadership In Classrooms, Kong Wah Chan Jan 2017

Learners’ Perceptions Of Servant-Leadership In Classrooms, Kong Wah Chan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The term servant-leadership was coined by Robert Greenleaf (1970) through his collection of essays titled The Servant as Leader. His message is that the best leader is first a servant. Beazley (2003) described servant-leadership as an art, a calling, a way of being, and a philosophy of life. Hence, it is not modern theory of leadership and management technique but rather the process of serving, and the development of the led, who are being served. Omoh (2007) considered that the results of servant-leadership include follower-empowerment as well as mutual trust and collaboration between the servant-leader and the led. More specifically, …

The Accompanying Servant-Leader: Facilitating Change That Builds Engaged Partnerships, Josh P. Armstrong, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Many of us want to make a difference in our communities, and in our personal and professional lives. We want to be leaders, bringing change to a world that seems increasingly hungry for transformation. However, one doesn t need to look very far to see examples of those leaders with good intentions, both home and abroad, who get in the way of true change (Ellerman, 2006; Moyo, 2009). Often as not, the source of failure is overemphasizing tangible results while underemphasizing process. If we are to make a sustainable difference, we must focus on accompaniment more than accomplishment.

Agape: Empowering Servant-Leader Congruence, Kyle Coe, Alice Coe Jan 2017

Agape: Empowering Servant-Leader Congruence, Kyle Coe, Alice Coe

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Many have experienced situations where a leader has asked them to perform a task or exhibit certain characteristics that did not benefit the follower s growth, but that of their leader and/or organization. In these cases, leadership choices are not based on what is best for the individual follower, but more out of a self-centered mentality, facilitating a self-centered culture within departments, organizations, businesses, and potentially larger culture. The recent world financial crisis of 2008 was the result of a selfcentered culture perpetuated on a grand scale and the domino effect created by selfishly motivated leadership, for which society is …

Forgiveness And Reconciliation As An Organizational Leadership Competency Within Transitional Justice Instruments, Andrew Campbell

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The socio-cultural and ethnic trauma experienced by victims of human rights violations impact not only post reconstruction activities but also stable governance initiatives as transitional leaders foster national reconciliation in a post conflict environment. Scholars note that demands upon transitional leaders range from macroeconomic stabilization and generation of employment to anti-corruption and sustainability of markets; at the same time, physical and territorial security call for accountability and justice for perpetrators under the rule of law in the aftermath of human rights violations committed during conflict (Oola, 2015; Sammi, 2010; Saunders, 2011). Yet, if forgiveness and reconciliation are not included as …

What follows is a personal case study in servantleadership. For the sake of confidentiality and clarity, I will employ pseudonyms both for my subject (the library dean at a small but growing Catholic institution of liberal arts) and for the school itself. I first met the subject of this study, whom I will refer to as Evelyn Bentley, late in November of the year 2000, not long after she had assumed the role of Interim Dean of Library Services at the institution I will call St. Aloysius University. In April of the same year, I had given up my job …

Digitally Mediated: Exploring The Correlation Between Hyper-Reliance On Electronically-Mediated Communication, Verbal Communication Apprehension And Interpersonal Relationship Skills, Kevin R. Bertsch

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to identify a possible correlation between the use of electronically-mediated communication (EMC) as the dependent variable and both verbal communication apprehension (CA) and interpersonal intimacy and closeness as independent variables. Viewed through the lens of three primary theoretical perspectives, social penetration theory, social information processing, and uncertainty reduction, two questions formed the foundation of the project. RQ1) Is hyper-reliance on electronically-mediated communication associated with a corresponding increase in verbal communication apprehension during face-to-face conversations? RQ2) Is there a correlation between hyper-reliance on electronically-mediated communication and the ability to develop close interpersonal relationships? A combination …

The Ontology Of Technology: A Heideggerian Perspective, RóIsíN Lally Jul 2016

The Ontology Of Technology: A Heideggerian Perspective, RóIsíN Lally

Leadership Studies Faculty Scholarship

The question concerning technology lies at the heart of human existence. As such it must take a central place in philosophy today. This importance, however, is veiled by a historical interpretation of technology as instrumental. This instrumentalism is the result of an ambiguity in the Aristotelian legacy that arises from an understanding of reality rooted in a theory of the categories, on the one hand, and a theory of causality on the other. This has left us with an ambiguous understanding of human making split by the twofold structure of artistic and representational thinking. The former is characteristic of empirical …

Using Oz and Lock-up as text, the study used Entman’s (1993) four processes of framing communication. It was determined that the information and themes of incarceration in the television programs were unrealistic representations of prisoners, rehabilitation programs within the …

Inside Jokes: A Sensemaking Resource For Understanding Sarcasm And Teasing In The Workplace, Tara Gray Anderson

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Humorous exchanges using sarcasm and teasing can be found in many workplaces despite the fact that they are often considered inappropriate. This study looked at what causes people to participate in sensemaking after engaging in these types of humor and examined how people make sense of sarcasm and teasing. The framework for this study was Sherif’s Social Judgment Theory (SJT) (1969) and Sensemaking (1995). Twenty people were interviewed about their last workplace exchange involving these types of humor and their answers were recorded and analyzed. The results showed that recipients, through sensemaking, assimilated jokes that were insulting and not humorous. …

Revolutionary Technologies: Praxical Time As A Way Of Overcoming Reification, RóIsíN Lally Jan 2016

Revolutionary Technologies: Praxical Time As A Way Of Overcoming Reification, RóIsíN Lally

Leadership Studies Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that by recognizing the fundamental relationship between praxical time and dwelling as a matrix of interweaving modes of being, society can subvert the potential reification of humanity by technology. This can only be achieved through a democratic process that involves participatory agents not only at the design level but also in the event of naming future innovations. By looking at the work of Alain Badiou, it is shown how a fusion of Heideggerian-inspired phenomenology and speculative ontology is critical for the advancement of social theory, as revolutionary technologies become increasingly immersive.

A Glimpse At Media-Framing Effects On Place Attachment In Rural Northwest Montana, Gregory D. Bruns

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study examined how outdated media framing can disturb rural place attachment. Evaluating this concept against the backdrop of south Lincoln County, Montana, which is nearing the end of a years-long EPA Superfund cleanup, over 100 regional visitors were surveyed to learn if media framing affected place-attachment sentiments. The investigation revealed that existing news stories, some up to 15 years old, may be playing a lingering and consequential role in attracting first-time destination seekers to the region, in support of framing theory. Furthermore, these findings also lend credence to the significance of sound Internet search-engine optimization practices, and provide an …

This study explores supervisor/employee communication and the affect it has on employees’ decisions to stay or leave an organization. Call-Out Culture: How Online Shaming Affects Social Media Participation In Young Adults, Ethan M. Huffman

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Communication via social media is important to many young adults. While participation affords benefits, it can lead to acts of online shaming. This study hypothesized that young social media users are concerned that the information they post online could cascade out of control leading to a verbal attack by an anonymous crowd. As a result, users reduce the frequency of posting content to social media after witnessing or experiencing acts of online shaming. Academic attention has not focused on social media participation, or the lack thereof, as a behavioral trait akin to organizational silence. Drawing on Morrison and Milliken’s (2000) …

A Gendered Lens Of Understanding Confidence, Abbey Johnston Jan 2016

A Gendered Lens Of Understanding Confidence, Abbey Johnston

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Women make up approximately half of the U.S. workforce, yet far fewer women than men reach senior management and leadership positions. Women enter the workplace at levels similar to men, with comparable credentials and expectations, but their career paths rapidly diverge. This discrepancy among males and females can be associated, in part, to the documented difference in confidence between men and women. This study addressed the critical topic of how gender may impact an individual’s understanding and level of confidence and utilized the theoretical lenses of Mead’s (1934) Symbolic Interactionism and the Standpoint Theory of Harding (1991) and Wood (2004). …

Communication And Leadership Styles Utilized By Mill Managers Compared To Front Line Leaders, Ashley Meaghan Moore

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Paper mills can be a dangerous place to work; therefore, effective leadership by the mill manager and front line leaders are crucial to the safety of their employees. To help fill the gap, the author engaged in a case study and collected data through an online survey and guided interviews to examine their personal experiences with their leadership and communication styles within the mill environment with Mead’s (1934) Symbolic Interactionism …

For the purposes of this study, Islamic State – a radical extremist organization rooted in the Middle East – is widely reported on both platforms and is used as a focal point for the study’s purposes. U.S. Millennials who participated in this study address their concerns with how information is reported in today’s 24/7 news coverage and constant outreach from organizations that report on world events. …

Extroversion And Media Richness: An Analysis Of Media Preferences Of High Extroverts Within Sales Organizations, Donna M. Dudek

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Personality traits and vocational acumen have been the source of research in recent years. Using personality measures such as the Five Factor model, researchers have sought to find common traits which may predict success in critical organizational roles. Communication needs and desires, including media richness choices, have also been the subject of past research. The purpose of this thesis is to tie these two themes together. Using a survey instrument containing both a personality inventory and a questionnaire examining media preferences in different scenarios, the author gathered data from sales professionals, client service professionals, and managers to evaluate similarities and …

This case study explores Cruz’s digital outreach efforts in the shadow of GOP rival Donald Trump’s commanding use of traditional earned media. This case study views the Cruz campaign’s digital outreach strategy through the lens of the Agenda Setting theory of communication, which seeks to explain the mass media’s ability to influence what the important issues are to the public, and through the reverse agenda setting effect, meaning if the airtime is unavailable through traditional …
