The Professional Perspective Panel

"What We Have In Common!" is the topic of a professional panel of a diverse group of leaden from very different youth service organizations and academic institutions. They addressed specific points of commonality in the profession, such as leadership, management, volunteerism, and the relationships to the competencies needed. The panel set the stage for the Symposium by providing focus on the key issues and questions to be addressed by the working ~ions. The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program has established a new support base to education for youth service organization careers. Commitment to the challenges and opportunities of the program is extremely high throughout the University among students, faculty, and administration One of the key challenges to the program is to conduct an annual national symposium on important issues to the profession. The Symposium is an annual working conference of youth service related professionals that focuses on solving practical problems of the emerging profession through continuing sequences of study and development. We heard this afternoon about the challenge., presented by both the changing demographics and the changing realities of adolescence in this country. We will hear, over the course of the symposium, about the challenge., involved in designing and running more effective programs, recruiting, training and retaining volunteers, raising funds. Relying upon many years of experience as an early childhood educator and consultant, and utilizing examples of programs and forms during the past thirteen years while serving as the Director of Peace Lutheran Preschool/Kindergarten in Owensboro, Kentucky, and as a regional/national early childhood consultant. The author has proposed a manuscript whose purpose is to assist early childhood professionals in the development and implementation of quality, needs-appropriate preschool programs.
