Indonesian Islamic banks are required have minimum capital in relation to bank’s risk profile rating that comes from the comprehensive risk assessment process. This is a qualitative study to observe how Islamic banks in Indonesia respond to the regulation, with the focus observation on the material risk identification process, risk indicators and determination of risk level. Based on discussion with some risk officers of Islamic banks indicates that the banks do not have specific process to identify material risks. This thesis analyzes the establishment of a zone, free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction (WMDFZ), in the Middle East. It argues that the proposed Middle East zone constitutes a normative regulatory strategy for promoting nonproliferation and disarmament in the region in support of broader, international nonproliferation and disarmament efforts. It addresses the subject of the zone through the lens of Martha Finnemore and Kathryn Sikkink’s norm life cycle model, which asserts that norms first emerge (norm emergence), then spread throughout a given population (norm cascade), and then become internalized as standard practice by members of the population …

Close to the entrance of Cairo’s legendary Tahrir Square, a tent adorned with the Syrian flag houses photographs of the brutality of 18 months of atrocities and casualties of the Syrian uprising. My proposed thesis will examine Syrians who migrated to Cairo fleeing the violence in Syria, where escalating battles between rebel forces and the Syrian army continue to push hundreds of thousands of Syrian civilians into Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. The refugee camp today has been naturalized as a product of failed international idealism and political expediency that serves as a timeless reminder of the plight of displaced peoples. This article explores the refugee camp’s origins as a product of a late Victorian imperial and military legacy and the contingencies of World War I. The use of the concentration camp as a tool to provide refuge and control displaced populations began during the war as a humanitarian measure. This thesis engages a comparative study of the political thought and practice of two of the foremost ideologues of political Islam in the twentieth century: Sayyid Qutb and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The study explores each man’s revolutionary worldview and the strategies they advanced for the effectuation of change. In particular, the study highlights Qutb’s Milestones and Khomeini’s Lectures on Islamic Government. This thesis analyzes Abu Jaâ far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabariâ s chronicle (d. 923) History of Prophets and Kings using a gender perspective. It focuses on al-Tabariâ s representation of women during the Madina period, arguing that through such a representation al-Tabari projects his Abbasid gender norms on the women of this period. The thesis focuses on four main subjects in relation to al-Tabariâ s text: the image of rebellious non-Muslim women, â Aâ ishaâ s involvement in the Battle of the Camel, and women as rational and emotional players in the Madina period.

Upon arrival to a new country, many immigrants face job downgrading, a phenomenon describing workers being in jobs below the ones they have based on the skills they possess. Moreover, in the presence of downgrading immigrants receiving lower wage returns to the same skills compared to natives. The level of downgrading could depend on the immigrant type and numerous other factors. This study examines the determinants of skill downgrading among two types of immigrants – refugees and economic immigrants – in the German labor markets between 1984 and 2018. Israel began constructing a separation barrier in 2003 in response to increasing terrorism and suicide bombings by the Palestinians during the Second Intifada (Dowty, 2005, p. 171). The separation barrier is an elaborate 400-mile security system of concrete walls, fences, barricades and checkpoints built to protect Israeli citizens (Vick & Arik, 2010). The wall portion of the barrier was constructed of thick reinforced concrete, stands approximately 25 feet tall, and separates the West Bank and Israel boundaries. Refugee access to higher education is devastatingly low. Recognizing the complex barriers facing refugee learners, global educational initiatives are innovating flexible learning models which promote blended online and in-person learning modalities. This article describes the implementation of a five month, online-based internship pilot offered to 21 refugee participants in qualitative and quantitative research methods, through a participatory action research (PAR) framework in five different countries -- Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, and Lebanon. The internship is part of the Global Education Movement (GEM), which brings refugees accredited online college degree and career development opportunities. This dissertation explores the relationship between observed incidents and perceptions of value violation or confirmation among Israeli soldiers. Through content analysis of 900 testimonies, the work explores the intersection of social identity, military ethics and nonviolent movements. The data show that many soldiers do not see their tasks as supporting the overall mission of keeping their country and nation safe, leading to a decline in motivation and sense of purpose. Further, deeper reflections on whether actions on the ground are in line with proposed national values result in incidents of role conflict, individual cognitive dissonance and vicarious dissonance.

This dissertation explores U.S. actions in the military “Surge” in Iraq from 2007-2008. Focus is on the entwined utilization of coercive and attractive power or smart power as an enabler of success and change from prior U.S. strategies in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. The analysis is based upon an extensive set of interviews with operational participants in the Surge from across the Executive Branch. Results show that smart power was an important element of the Surge and its use facilitated success, but that doing smart power was not a simple matter of achieving some mix of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ power, but …

The focus of this research lies in the possibility of security threats to the various investments made by China in Israel, causing intervention from America. The method used in this paper is the Qualitative Method (Case Study). The results of this study indicate that the threat to Chinese investment in Israel is only a concern for Israel because China adheres to the 'Zero Enemy' policy.

The size and scope of the Vision 2030 modernization plan and the associated Saudi Aramco initial public offering are watershed events in the history of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
