Bringing Climate Change Home To Meet Your Community: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Offshore Wind Energy In Humboldt County, California, Ciara R. Emery
Bringing Climate Change Home To Meet Your Community: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Offshore Wind Energy In Humboldt County, California, Ciara R. Emery
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
As impacts from anthropogenic climate change continue to manifest at global and local scales, communities are increasingly seeking solutions to transition the world away from fossil fuels. Novel renewable energy technologies, including offshore floating wind energy, continue to garner developer interest. Technological success, however, is one small piece in the effort to decarbonize. Project developers are required to engage in political and bureaucratic processes and work with communities where projects may be sited. Balancing community perceptions and needs, as well as permitting and leasing processes, with increasing pressure to decarbonize will be key as the fight against climate change continues. …
Living Rivers, Cosmopolitan Activism, And Environmental Justice In The Bengal Delta, Daniel Adel
Living Rivers, Cosmopolitan Activism, And Environmental Justice In The Bengal Delta, Daniel Adel
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis explores the social movements and civil society activism to protect the rivers that flow through Bangladesh—the cradle and terminal delta floodplain of the transboundary Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna river systems—, as well as ways to build regional cooperation and watershed democracy in South Asia. The research drew on four overarching fields of study: environmental justice, southern environmentalism, ecological nationalism, and environmental governance. These four bodies of scholarship helped address the overarching question: how are civil society organizations analyzing and responding to the water diversions and degradation of Bangladesh’s transboundary rivers? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with civil society organizations …
Retelling Narratives Of Eco-Memory: Settler Colonialism And Carceral Occupation Of The Jordan River, Megan Rose Awwad
Retelling Narratives Of Eco-Memory: Settler Colonialism And Carceral Occupation Of The Jordan River, Megan Rose Awwad
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In this thesis, I retell and reclaim stories that have been shared and passed down within my family and family history in relation to our homeland, Palestine, and more specifically to the Jordan River. I argue that the construction of the dam in the 1960s on the Jordan River, by a zionist state, is an extension of both the settler colonial state and the treatment of the land/rivers as inherently linked with the treatment of Indigenous people. The carceral spaces and geographies settler states create are part of both the destruction of the land and the genocide Indigenous people experience. …

Resilience, Capacity, And Place: A Comparative Case Study Of Small-Scale Forest-Based Biomass Energy Development In California’S Sierra Nevada Mountain Range Communities, Rebecca E. Cashero
Resilience, Capacity, And Place: A Comparative Case Study Of Small-Scale Forest-Based Biomass Energy Development In California’S Sierra Nevada Mountain Range Communities, Rebecca E. Cashero
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The buildup of fuels resulting from decades of fire suppression in California's Sierra Nevada mountains has made its dense forests vulnerable to high severity stand replacing wildfires. Local governments in many rural forest-dependent communities view biomass energy production as a method to restore forest health via fuel removal and waste disposal. Forest-based biomass energy facilities have the potential to be compatible with protecting water resources, habitat restoration, forest resilience, and achieving climate standards, while also enhancing regional economic stability. However, while an increasing number of communities and organizations throughout California are advocating for local small-scale renewable energy from forest-based woody …
Sustainable Transportation For Hsu Stakeholders: Looking Into Access And Behavior, Aneika J. Perez
Sustainable Transportation For Hsu Stakeholders: Looking Into Access And Behavior, Aneika J. Perez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Aneika Jasmine Perez
Safe and affordable transportation to and from campus are not available to many members of the HSU community. This research seeks to understand how members of the campus community can access forms of transportation without relying on private automobiles. A critical component of this research is to understand specific ways in which members of the campus community can access sustainable forms of transportation without relying on private automobiles.
This research draws primarily on Icek Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior framework, to determine that choice of travel mode is based on decisions that are affected by …
Habitat Use And Prey Selection By Mountain Lions In An Altered Sagebrush Steppe Environment, Jonathan Ewanyk
Habitat Use And Prey Selection By Mountain Lions In An Altered Sagebrush Steppe Environment, Jonathan Ewanyk
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Throughout the American West there is an increasing trend of encroachment of woody vegetation on previously open sagebrush steppe habitat. The Modoc Plateau in northeastern California has not been excluded from this encroachment trend and has seen an increase in western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) densities, likely as a result of long-term fire suppression. Mountain lions (Puma concolor) have not previously been studied on the Modoc Plateau, and there is potential for an increase in cover due to juniper encroachment to benefit the hunting behavior of lions. To better understand if the presence of cover is being …

Eureka, Ca Fishing Community Sustainability Plan, Lisa Wise Consulting, Inc., Humboldt State University
Local Reports and Publications
The Eureka Fishing Community Sustainability Plan (FCSP) is the product of years of planning, hard work, and collaboration among a wide range of interests, led by local commercial and charter fishermen, processors, representatives from the mariculture industry, fishing-related businesses, fishing families, civic leaders, elected officials, City of Eureka staff, academia, business owners and operators, and funding from the federal government.
An FCSP is a document outlined in the federal Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) to address “the social development needs of coastal communities.” The word “Fishing” has been added at the community’s discretion to better represent the focus …

A Geospatial Recipe For Identifying Social Values And Fragmentation Issues Of The Friends Of The Dunes Land Trust, Buddhika Madurapperuma, Jess Barger, Melissa Collin, Christine Emerson, Sean Fleming, Brian Murphy
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
The beach and coastal sand dunes comprise a dynamic and fragile ecosystem that provides a bounty of ecological services. These lands provide protection from coastal erosion and sea level rise, and are home to a rich biodiversity of plant and animal species in addition to their recreational value. The Humboldt Coastal Nature Center and the surrounding coastal dunes (HCNC) are man-aged as a land trust by Friends of the Dunes (FOD). FOD prioritize the restoration of dune habitats and encourages public involvement through community supported education and stewardship programs, guided nature tours, and naturalist training programs. The faculty, students, and …

Environmental Values Of California Winegrape Growers And The Use Of Barn Owls (Tyto Alba) As A Tool For Integrated Pest Management, Brooks R. Estes
Environmental Values Of California Winegrape Growers And The Use Of Barn Owls (Tyto Alba) As A Tool For Integrated Pest Management, Brooks R. Estes
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Landscape conversion and impacts of synthetic pesticides from agriculture pose threats to natural habitats critical to preserving biodiversity and ecosystem services. Pest management is a concern for all agriculture, and many conventional practices can negatively affect the environment through drift, runoff, and harming non-target species. Winegrapes are particularly at risk of damage from rodents, which can girdle vines and destroy root systems.
One alternative to reduce rodent numbers that has shown promise in agriculture is the use of barn owl (Tyto alba) boxes. The Johnson Lab at Humboldt State University has been researching barn owl behavior and ecology …
An Intersectional Perspective On Diversity In Environmental Regulatory Agencies: A Case Study Of Women Of Color And Their Liminal Position Of Identity In South Florida, Leah A. Ramnath
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Diversity statistics from environmental agencies nationwide reveal overall growth and improvement in gender and racial composition of employees. However, although women occupied over half of leadership and staff positions, most were white women. The Regulatory and Economic Resources office, an environmental regulatory agency in south Florida, is exceptional as a majority of their employees are women of color. Although there has been continuous development of diversity initiatives by environmental agencies nationwide, perspectives of how women of color are experiencing the environmental workplace are underrepresented when reporting diversity data.
My study aims to understand the complex role of diversity in environmental …
