The overall objective of this study is to identify the seasonal patterns in S.D. cash prices (received by farmers) for corn, wheat, and oats. Seasonality in S.D. cash prices may be different from the seasonality in the U.S. cash prices for a commodity. The reasons for this may be differences in the seasonal supply and demand for the commodity and the supply and demand for substitutes. The availability and price of storage and transportation can also have substantial impact on regional commodity price seasonality. What effect does foreign direct investment (FDI) have on job creation, wages, and productivity in the U.S.? How does FDI impact the budget deficit? How do changes in states' fiscal policy affect plant location choices? Ondrych and Wasylenko address these and other politically-charged questions concerning FDI. Provided is empirical evidence drawn from a pooled cross-section and time-series data set that identifies the criteria foreigners use to make location decisions. The authors also develop a model, against which they compare their findings, and review policy options available at the state and federal levels. In recent years, increased demands for water for competing uses created a need for establishing a systematic water resource management policy. Knowledge of the value of benefits of water in its various uses is necessary for allocation decisions because this resource is in the public domain. This paper discusses several non-market methods of imputing the economic value of water, particularly recreational water use. Using Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) data, two alternative techniques for measuring value ~re evaluated and compared. These methods are used to provide empirical estimates of the recreational value that people place on Minnesota's water resources. …

In 1992, Nigeria's economy faced significant pressures but showed resilience, with rapid growth in output and economic liquidity. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intensified efforts to achieve inflation and exchange rate stability while improving the efficiency of the financial sector. The financial sector experienced rapid growth and structural changes, with the strongest growth occurring in common unity banking and mortgage finance institutions. Monetary and credit aggregates expanded at unprecedented rates, matching the all-time highs of the oil boom era of the mid-seventies. A Study Of Kentucky’S Agricultural Performance Using Shift-Share Analysts, David Neal Cundiff

In this paper the theory that Kentucky has a comparative advantage in agricultural employment, when compared to the United States, is examined. In order to test this hypothesis, a dynamic shift-share analysis was conducted using the thirteen major economic sector of Kentucky over the period 1970 to 1989. The resulting regional shift components, or competitive components, give support to the theory that a comparative advantage for Kentucky in agriculture does exist. Annual regional shift components, as well as their dynamic counterpart, possess predominately positive values, indicating outperformance by Kentucky’s agricultural sector when compared to the United States economy as a …

The establishment and promotion of Export Processing Zones (EPZs) has been identified as a potential scheme for boosting manufactured exports. A decree (No. 34 Nigerian Export Processing Zones Decree 1991) formally establishing export processing zones in Nigeria was promulgated by the Federal Government on August 9, 1991. Consequently, an area beside the port of Calabar has been chosen as the site of Nigeria’s premier EPZ and the foundation stone was laid by the President in November,1991. This paper, therefore, examines the expected roles of the banks with a view of alerting them to the challenges ahead.

The Effects Of Metropolitan Job Growth On The Size Distribution Of Family Income, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper examines how a metropolitan area's job growth affects its income distribution. The research uses annual Current Population Survey data on the income distribution in different metropolitan areas from 1979 through 1988. Faster metropolitan job growth increases real family income in the lowest income quintile by a significantly greater percentage than for the average family. Metropolitan job growth also increases the value of property owned by upper income quintiles, but property value effects are not large enough to offset the progressive effects of growth on labor income.
