Competitiveness has gained importance as a subject of study during the last decade or so. The initial stimulus came during the eighties when the US experienced an economic decline. As American firms started losing ground all over the world in significantly important industries such as automobile, shipbuilding, electronics and steel, researchers began focussing attention on country and industry level competitiveness. What accounts for the relative attractiveness of Asia's emerging equity markets to an American Fund Manager? Following a brief overview of portfolio flows to developing countries, an empirical analysis of Asia's emerging equity markets is conducted to rank them on the basis of risk diversification using correlation analysis. This is followed by an analysis and ranking of Asia's emerging equity markets in terms of total returns with a summary of the major findings in terms of risk diversification and return enhancement. An Attempt has been made in this paper to highlight the role of unincorporated enterprises in the Indian economy and the relevance of the economic reforms currently underway. The share of the unincorporated sector in national income, in manufacturing and in activities like transport, trade, construction, etc, is analysed. Savings and capital formation in the unincorporated sector are detailed. Finally, the implications of the recent economic reforms in the context of this sector, are discussed.
