The objective of this paper is to review the major non-oil sector policy measures from I 960 to date, appraise them in the context of growth in output; and to put on record the implications for future policy direction. Following a brief overview of portfolio flows to developing countries, an empirical analysis of Asia's emerging equity markets is conducted to rank them on the basis of risk diversification using correlation analysis. Aggregate industrial output improved during the second quarter of the year in spite of the problems of high production costs and liquidity constraints. The index of industrial production at 225.6 (1972 = 100) increased by 6.7 and 3.6. per cent over its levels 'in the corresponding quarter of 1988 and the first quarter of 1989, respectively (see table I). In 1983, Nigeria's economy experienced severe stagflation, with GDP falling by 4.4%, more than the 3.4% decline recorded in 1982. Domestic inflation was 23.2%, more than three times the 7.7% recorded in 1982. The external sector also suffered from the general malaise, with the recorded value of external trade falling from N21.3 billion in 1982 to N17.3 billion in 1983. Many studies approach the housing-income relationship by calculating the income elasticity of demand for housing. This study employs this approach in order to (1) test the implications of the permanent income hypothesis by using data which provide both biased and unbiased elasticity coefficients and (2) test the effects which the explanatory variable, family composition, may have on the elasticity coefficients.
The methodology involves regressing the log of housing expenditure on the log of disposable income for seven different family compositions in order to obtain the income elasticity coefficients. This approach is applied to data (cross section 1960-61 BLS consumer surveys) …
