Workers' Compensation: Benefits, Costs, And Safety Under Alternative Insurance Arrangements, Terry Thomason, Timothy P. Schmidle, John F. Burton

Thomason, Schmidle, and Burton make use of a unique data set to delve into how insurance arrangements affect several objectives of the workers' compensation (WC) program. They underscore the effects of deregulation and other changes in WC insurance pricing arrangements by performing empirical analyses that use state-specific cost, benefit, and injury data from 48 states for 1975-1995. This allows them to address the interactive relationships among the four objectives of WC systems adequacy of benefits, affordability of WC insurance, efficiency in the benefits delivery system, and prevention of workplace injuries and diseases and how various public policies adopted by states …

Factors Affecting Career Advancement Among Young School Leavers, Mei Mei Lim

This study examines the patterns of career advancement and factors affecting an individual's career advancement. Career advancement is measured using occupational mobility and income mobility. The analyses are based on 1702 young school leavers data for whom are available from the "Transition from School to Work" study, which was carried out between 1989 and 1996. It is common to change occupation or employer or both in the early stages of the career. For every two individuals, one of them changes jobs within the seven years studied. Individuals in the professional group are the least likely to change occupation and the …

A lot of focus has been placed on the importance of the relationship between wages and labour productivity in view of increasing competition due to the globalization of economies. Therefore, this paper attempts to examine whether the increase in real wages is commensurate with higher increase in labour productivity. The model of this study is adapted from Carneiro's (1998) paper which is based on union-firm wage bargaining model.
