Determination Of Interest Rate Saharan African Countries: A Analysis., A. O. Folawewo, E. A. Udeaja

A major indicator of banking sector efficiency is interest rate spreads (IRS), which have been found to be very high in African countries. This paper analysed the determinants of interest rate spreads in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) from a macro perspective, that is, using aggregate banking sector data, and focusing macroeconomic and market determinants. The study used ex-ante measure of spreads, that is, differences between interest rates on lending and deposit. Using annual data covering 33 countries, the result to obtained from the paper suggested that different market and macroeconomic policy variables played significant role in explaining variation in IRS in …

The paper examined the implementation of monetary policy in recent years following the successes recorded in the banking sector reforms and noted the achievement of most of the objectives of monetary policy. In addition, in terms of financial sector development, Nigeria has achieved greater institutional and regulatory capacity as well as products varieties that have improved development in the financial sector. The quantitative assessment of the financial sector indicates a healthy state of the banking industry.

This paper provided empirical evidence on the determinants of interest rate spread in a liberalized financial system for the period 1989-2000, using selected banks in Nigeria. Ex-ante interest rate spread equations were estimated using bank balance sheet and income statement as well as macroeconomic data. The results showed that macroeconomic and monetary policy/financial regulation factors were more important determinants of commercial banks' interest spread than bank level factors, Inflation rate, GDP, .financial deepening, cash reserve requirement, risk premium, treasure bill rate, loan asset quality, liquidity risk and non interest expenses were the most important.factors that affected commercial banks' interest rate …

The question of stability over time of the adjusted money multiplier relation is of crucial importance for adjusted base money to act as the main link to money supply. This paper tests the hypothesis of stability of money multiplier relations in Nigeria using the forward recursive cusum of squares that uses a confidence interval which is distributed as Pyke 's modified Kolmogrov-Smirnov statistic. N11.9 million and a net outflow of N3.7 million during the third and fourth quarters of 1983 respectively. These compared with the net outflows of 13.2 and N171.9 million recorded during the counterpart periods of the preceding year (See Table 1). In line with these developments, official holdings of external reserves increased by N11.9 million during the 3rd quarter, recording N802.2 million at the end of September, 1983. They decreased by N3.7 million during the 4th quarter to N798.5 million at the end of December 1983. (See Table 3) .

Money supply, narrowly defined , Ml, attained a seasonal peak of N 11,282.4 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 1983, thus showing an increase of N256.5 million or 2.3 per cent over the level in the preceding quarter, compared with the increase of N950. l million or 10.4 per cent in the corresponding period of 1982.
