This thesis examines the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and financing constraints, placing particular emphasis on the moderating role of institutional investors in listed Chinese firms. Drawing on information asymmetry theory, the study argues that ESG performance can reduce financing constrains by narrowing informational discrepancies between firms and external capital providers. While prior research has largely focused on the direct effects of ESG on financing, limited attention has been given to the ways in which institutional investors who are both major users of ESG information and active participants in corporate governance shape this relationship. This thesis is motivated by the limited research on the liquidity of Malaysian public listed firms, the growing number of liquidity horseraces, the recent data commercialization by Bursa Malaysia, and liquidity-enhancing policies being spearheaded mainly by stock exchange regulators in emerging markets. By assembling information that covers 1250 public listed non-financial firms over 2000–2015, the thesis conducts three empirical analyses on the determinants of firm liquidity and the effects of higher liquidity on firm valuation, where liquidity is proxied by the “Closing Percent Quoted Spreads” (CPQS). This study investigates the causal relations and dynamic interactions among stock prices, real interest rate, real money balances and real activity in Malaysia using monthly data from January 1987 to December 2001. This full sample period is also divided into two sub-periods for analysis. The first sub-period covers January 1987 to August 1998 while the second sub-period covers September 1998 to December 2001. The conventional unit root tests suggest that all variables are integrated of order one. Using trend and ratio analysis, this study analyses the performance of Islamic banking operations at three foreign banks in Malaysia i.e. HSBC, OCBC and SCB:MB. Using the data from 1996-2000, it is possible to track progress and evaluate performances of the Islamic Banking Scheme (IBS) versus its conventional counterpart at these banks. It is also possible to examine the impacts of the Asian Crisis in 1997-98 to the Islamic banking operations, especially at the foreign banks. This research will examine the impact of bond ratings on market efficiency and stock returns. The study covered rating announcements from 1996 to 2001. Four types of rating announcements were covered namely initial announcement, reaffirmation, upgrades and downgrades. Each rating is categorized into investment grade and speculative grade. The mean adjusted model was used to determine the abnormal returns. The findings showed insignificant movement in abnormal returns for all type of ratings and also the sub-category of speculative and investment grades. This empirical research investigates the holiday effect in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) using three daily stock indices: Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Composite Index (KLSE Cl), Exchange Main Board All-Share Index (KLSE EMI), and Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Second Board Index (KLSE SBI) over the period January 1990 to June 2001. The results show abnormally high preholiday returns which predominate only on the single trading day immediately prior to holidays and the pre-holiday fraction of positive return is found significantly higher for all three indices.
