The mission of the World Bank is to aid developing countries stabilize their economies through financial and technical assistance. The five dominant themes that emerge in a review of the World Bank literature are: health, gender, environment, globalization, and global governance. Each of these themes is broadly related to issues that consistently influence the larger issue of how the World Bank incorporates, rejects, or impacts human rights.

Stormwater utilities are a concept whose time seems to have arrived. Established by relatively few communities in the 1970s as a method of funding flood control measures, stormwater utilities now exist in over 400 municipalities and counties throughout the United States. During the next 10 years, their numbers are expected to swell dramatically – by one estimate to over 2,000 by the year 2014.

The reasons for this growth are multifold. Federal stormwater regulations passed in the 1980s (Phase I of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Program, or NPDES), motivated many larger communities to seek alternative funding sources and …

The 1997 Asian financial crisis reversed over two decades of unprecedented and amazing economic growth in the eight High-Performing Asian Economies (HPAEs) including Malaysia. The interwoven relationship of banks and corporations have created a symbiosis that can be extreme in its effects. Given the circumstances facing these corporations, it may be imperative and therefore justifiable for some appropriate government intervention to check and reverse problems of insolvency, bankruptcy and declining real output. China's economic reform is now at a critical stage ofrestructuring the financial sector and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Although reforms have accomplished much over the past two decades, many problems still exist in these two sectors. Chinese banks and enterprises influence and interweave with each other. The banks can't operate fully as commercial banks until the principal borrowers are fully reformed. SOEs cannot become profitable unless the banking system is commercialized and stops making policy loans to the money-losing enterprises.
