2008 Hes Presidential Address: We're All "Persons" Now: Classical Economists And Their Opponents On Marriage, The Franchise, And Socialism, Sandra J. Peart

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

My purpose is to paint a broad brush narrative—it will have some visual representations as well—of how nineteenth-century political economists and their critics confronted a set of basic and related questions: Are men and women equally capable of self governance? Are they equally able to decide when and whom to marry and how many children to have? Can they be trusted equally to cast a ballot? Is their right to property inviolate or might new arrangements be designed and adopted for the production and distribution of wealth?

This is a story interwoven with extraordinary characters: John Stuart Mill will be …

Pakistan’S Economy – 1999/2000 – 2007/2008: An Objective Appraisal, Ishrat Husain

Business Review

This article is an attempt to present a dispassionate and objective analysis of the economic situation that attempts to try to sift facts from fiction and myths, separate analysis from emotions, present the strengths and weaknesses of the economy and draw conclusions based on evidence and analysis rather than popular rhetoric and half-truths. As there is a great deal of skepticism about the quality of the official data the sources used in this paper draw upon both internationally and nationally verified and authenticated numbers. At the international level, the IMF, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNDP, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, …

Corporate Predators Caught In Meltdown, Gil Villagran Nov 2008

Corporate Predators Caught In Meltdown, Gil Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The meltdown of Wall Street's so-called 'investment institutions' where the financial bubble of over-valued assets finally burst is so mind boggling that even economic gurus with PhDs and Nobel Prizes, and CEO billionaires testifying before Congress fail to fully explain what happened. Did the "invisible hand" of the "free market" finally deal America a losing set of cards after years of a winning streak? Is it all due to bad luck? Fate? An unfortunate financial version of a perfect storm, similar to Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast?

Toward A Libertarian Reconstruction Of Neoclassical Welfare Theory, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel Apr 2008

Toward A Libertarian Reconstruction Of Neoclassical Welfare Theory, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel

Faculty Publications

Many libertarians, especially those inclined toward the Austrian school of economics, counter the market-failure justification for government intervention by denying any legitimacy whatsoever to the neoclassical concept of efficiency. But properly interpreted, neoclassical efficiency, rather than providing an open-ended justification for all sorts of government intervention, provides one of the most powerful and comprehensive objections to government coercion in general.

Money Is Time: The Monetary Expression Of Value In Marx's Theory Of Value, David Kristjanson-Gural Apr 2008

Money Is Time: The Monetary Expression Of Value In Marx's Theory Of Value, David Kristjanson-Gural

Faculty Journal Articles

In this article, I derive the monetary expression of value based upon commodity money and use it to translate values and exchange values from units of labor into units of money. While this analysis has been done at the initial stage of Marx’s analysis where he assumes that commodities exchange in proportion to their values, I derive the monetary expression of value at the more developed stage of Marx’s 10 analysis where commodities exchange according to prices of production. I then develop a macroeconomic measure of the monetary expression of value and link the micro- and macroeconomic determination of the …

Liberalization Of The Capital Market In Russia, Nejc Smole Jan 2008

Liberalization Of The Capital Market In Russia, Nejc Smole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyzes the empirical events of capital market liberalization in Russia and refers to the procedure of capital market liberalization described in theory as a benchmark to assess the magnitude of events shaping the capital market liberalization in Russia.

The reformers of Russian regime change did not take a gradual approach of adjustments toward a successful socioeconomic transition. The state failed to create market-supporting institutions and instead rather proceeded with an ambitious program of synchronized application of policy changes and the economic liberalization. Lack of market-supporting institutions and an underdeveloped legal system in Russia have been the key tools …

Western Involvement In The Middle East: Imperialism And Its Effects, Jamie Elizabeth Dewitt Jan 2008

Western Involvement In The Middle East: Imperialism And Its Effects, Jamie Elizabeth Dewitt

Theses Digitization Project

This study explores Britain's and the United States' relationship with the Middle East, as specific examples of the theory of imperialism. The economic motivations for Britain's involvement in the Middle East are shown to be similar to those of the United States' involvement, and both of these are consistent with the theory of imperialism.

The Science Of Persuasion In Recent Discourse On T.R. Malthus: An Exercise In The Analysis Of Rhetoric In Economics, Laila Winner Jan 2008

The Science Of Persuasion In Recent Discourse On T.R. Malthus: An Exercise In The Analysis Of Rhetoric In Economics, Laila Winner

Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Of all the dour portraits lining the august halls of Economics, it is that of Thomas Robert Malthus which seems perhaps to scowl the most grimly. Describing an approach or policy as Malthusian in everyday conversation conjures a host of disturbing images, bare fields and squalling babies chief among them. Such allusions provoke even stronger reactions within the discipline Malthus helped to found, ranging from Keynes's fervent championship to the sneering dismissal of Samuelson. Neither the more famous Smith nor Ricardo nor even Marx can claim to have gained in their lives what the comparatively less prolific Reverend did with …

Market Correlation: Effect Of Historical Events On The World's Largest Financial Centers From 1983-2003, Thomas Vo

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper studies the effect of various historical events on the market correlation among the three largest financial centers of the world: New York City, London, and Tokyo for the time period 1983-2003. The analysis focuses on those correlations associated with four historical events: the U.S. stock market crash of 1987, the London IRA Bombing of 1990, the Asian Currency Crisis of 1997 (particularly the day the Thai Baht fell), and the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks of 2001. The purpose of this study was to provide additional information that will provide the investment community with insights about maintaining market …

Tribal Nation Economics: Rebuilding Commercial Prosperity In Spite Of U.S. Trade Restraints–Recommendations For Economic Revitalization In Indian Country, Angelique Eaglewoman

Faculty Scholarship

Tribal commerce created the current highways that stretch from coast-to-coast in North America today. The roads that are traveled by semi-trucks full of cargo, grocery produce, and all manner of commercial goods are on top of the ancient trade routes Natives have traveled for centuries. Unfortunately, the history and sophistication of Native commercial activities have been largely suppressed and left out of the story of the North American continent as Euro-Americans rewrote the continent’s history to reflect the glorification of colonization. The truth is that there was no need for the 'rugged pioneer' to cut through tall grass to head …

[Introduction To] The Street Porter And The Philosopher : Conversations On Analytical Egalitarianism, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy Jan 2008

[Introduction To] The Street Porter And The Philosopher : Conversations On Analytical Egalitarianism, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy

Bookshelf

Adam Smith, asserting the common humanity of the street porter and the philosopher, articulated the classical economists' model of social interactions as exchanges among equals. This model had largely fallen out of favor until, recently, a number of scholars in the avant-garde of economic thought rediscovered it and rechristened it "analytical egalitarianism." In this volume, Sandra J. Peart and David M. Levy bring together an impressive array of authors to explore the ramifications of this analytical ideal and to discuss the ways in which an egalitarian theory of individuality can enable economists to reconcile ideas from opposite ends of the …

The Economic Foundations Of Contemporary Slavery, Justin Guay Jan 2008

The Economic Foundations Of Contemporary Slavery, Justin Guay

Human Rights & Human Welfare

“Slavery existed before money or law” (Hochschild 2005). Indeed the “peculiar institution” is one of humanity’s oldest. It has, however, evolved and manifested itself quite distinctly in different periods of history. In contrast to historical views of slavery that are associated with Chattel Slavery, numerous forms fall under the umbrella term of contemporary slavery. The United Nations (U.N.) Working Group recognizes such radically new forms as: child labor, children in conflict, trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, and the sale of children. The International Labor Office (ILO) approaches the topic through the lens of forced labor. The ILO recognizes slavery and …

From Tranquility To Secession And Other Historical Sequences: A Theoretical Exposition, Paul Hallwood Sep 2007

From Tranquility To Secession And Other Historical Sequences: A Theoretical Exposition, Paul Hallwood

Economics Working Papers

A model is developed explaining many common historical sequences: inter alia, the rise and fall of empires, expansion or contraction in the geographic size of nations, wars of secession, non-contested secessions, and growth of supra-national unions. The basic unit of analysis is a transaction in international (or national) law that verifies and legitimizes transformations from one organizational entity to another. Decision-makers for national, or super-national entities as well as those at sub-levels are assumed to be welfare maximizers under cost constraints. Potential secessionists face dispute costs, and decision-makers for the higher-level entity incur persuasion costs. Both costs may include military …

Contracting For Force: The Effects Of Transaction Costs On Mercenary Employment By The Italian City States Of The 13th To 15th Centuries, Jack Anderson Aug 2007

Contracting For Force: The Effects Of Transaction Costs On Mercenary Employment By The Italian City States Of The 13th To 15th Centuries, Jack Anderson

All Theses

ABSTRACT The market for force in Italy through the 13th to 15th century is examined, through the medium of contracts between city states and mercenary soldiers. The historical era is divided into three distinct periods; each period is characterized by a typical contract type. Based on historical descriptions of these periods, it appears that the transaction costs associated with hiring private force providers varied significantly from period to period and regression analysis is performed in an attempt to determine the relationship between these costs and the number of private soldiers employed by the city states of Milan, Venice, and Florence …

[Introduction To] The Wealth Of Nations, Adam Smith, Jonathan B. Wight Jun 2007

[Introduction To] The Wealth Of Nations, Adam Smith, Jonathan B. Wight

Bookshelf

The Wealth of Nations is a treasured classic of political economy. First published in March of 1776, Adam Smith wrote the book to influence a special audience - the British Parliament - and its arguments in the early spring of that year pressed for peace and cooperation with Britain's colonies rather than war.

Smith's message was that economic exploitation, through the monopoly trade of empire, stifled wealth-creation in both home and foreign lands. Moreover, protectionism preserved the status quo, and privileged a few elites at the expense of long run growth.

Smith wrote, "It is the industry which is carried …

Development And Inequality: The Origins And Consequences Of Disciplinary Power In Argentina, Jessica Cenegy Brice May 2007

Development And Inequality: The Origins And Consequences Of Disciplinary Power In Argentina, Jessica Cenegy Brice

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Significant emphasis has been placed upon external influences which have maintained or perpetuated the relative underdevelopment of Latin America. Though some of this literature will provide a basis for explanation, the current analysis addresses the phenomenon with a notable variation from existing perspectives by introducing the Foucauldian distinction between juridical power and disciplinary power as an evaluative framework of analysis. Specifically, it emphasizes the need to incorporate unique cultural, historical, and structural characteristics that interrelate with power dynamics that have materialized within Argentina and have frustrated development efforts.

Death And Taxes, Including Inflation: The Public Versus Economists, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel Jan 2007

Death And Taxes, Including Inflation: The Public Versus Economists, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel

Faculty Publications

Inflation worries the general public much more than it does the economics profession, and economists remain perplexed as to exactly why. The costs that concern economists are inflation’s deadweight loss. But that is only a part of the losses that concern the public, because inflation simultaneously transfers some of people’s income into the hands of government. The fact that the seigniorage tax may pay for programs they favor is a separate issue. Moreover, unlike income and other taxes, which people in democratic countries may think they have some control over through voting, seigniorage appears utterly arbitrary. In fact, people can …

A Maid In Servitude: Filipino Domestic Workers In The Middle East, Kathleen Nadeau Jan 2007

A Maid In Servitude: Filipino Domestic Workers In The Middle East, Kathleen Nadeau

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper presents Filipino economic history as a way to provide a brief background to the events that precipitated one Filipino woman’s migration to the Middle East. Her story is not rare but shares in common patterns with the stories of many other female contract workers, especially domestic workers. It chronicles government policies and business practices that profit from their remittances. It is being retold here so that the invisible world of female contract workers and, more often than not, the poor conditions under which they live and labour, might be better understood.

Adam Smith And Poverty, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2007

Adam Smith And Poverty, Jonathan B. Wight

English Faculty Publications

Can we end poverty in America? Does economic theory offer a solution? Humility would be a good starting place, because systemic problems like generational poverty rarely stem from single causes. Putting the broken pieces together is difficult when some edges are sharp, some are shattered, and others missing. This essay draws on insights from Adam Smith in order to examine the problem of poverty. It focuses on a case study involving Serena Robins (the real names have been altered).

The State‐Led Transition To Liberal Capitalism: Neoliberal, Organizational, World‐Systems, And Social Structural Explanations Of Poland’S Economic Success, Lawrence P. King, Aleksandra Sznajder Lee Nov 2006

The State‐Led Transition To Liberal Capitalism: Neoliberal, Organizational, World‐Systems, And Social Structural Explanations Of Poland’S Economic Success, Lawrence P. King, Aleksandra Sznajder Lee

Political Science Faculty Publications

Neoliberals argue that rapid liberalization and privatization can transform postcommunist economies into Western-style capitalist systems. Organizational sociologists argue that these policies produce a unique variety of capitalism, while world-systems theorists argue that they lead to underdevelopment. This article advances a social structural alternative in a crucial case. Poland’s relative economic success resulted from prolonged state ownership and an interventionist state employing various industrial policy tools that facilitated efficiency-enhancing market-oriented restructuring before ushering in beneficial foreign direct investment. The resulting capitalist system closely resembles the typical pattern found in most late industrializers.
