Derrida's Debt To Milton Friedman, Michael Tratner Jan 2003

Derrida's Debt To Milton Friedman, Michael Tratner

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article draws on Derrida's account of economic history in Given Time I: Counterfeit Money to show that he is indebted to an economist he does not mention at all, Milton Friedman. Derrida calls for an investigation of the literary consequences of the "dematerialization of money" and proceeds to give his own version of this history by examining a Baudelaire story from 1864 and an economic treatise from 1925. Those texts may mark moments in economic history, but the dematerialization of money which Derrida sees in them is almost entirely a middle twentieth-century development, finalized in the demise of the …

Land Ordinances, Alexander J. Field Jan 2003

Land Ordinances, Alexander J. Field

Economics

As European influence extended across the oceans, all regions of recent settlement faced the challenge of devising means for distributing, by sale, lease, or grant, lands originally held or used by aboriginal populations, and at the same time defining the political relationship between the frontier and the existing states. One of the most sweeping instances of legislation addressing this issue took place in the early years of the United States where, in exchange for the cession of claims on western lands by the original thirteen states, the federal government under the Articles of Confederation agreed to convert the public domain …

Denying Human Homogeneity: Eugenics & Making Of Post-Classical Economics, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy Jan 2003

Denying Human Homogeneity: Eugenics & Making Of Post-Classical Economics, Sandra J. Peart, David M. Levy

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The question we propose to address is how did economics move from the classical period characterized by the hardest possible doctrine of initial human homogeneity—all the observed differences among people arise from incentives, luck, and history1—to become comfortable with accounts of human behavior which alleged foundational differences among and within races of people? (Darity 1995) In this paper, we shall argue that early British eugenics thinkers racialized economics in the post-classical period.2

Slavery, Economics And Constitutional Ideals, Edward L. Ayers Jan 2002

Slavery, Economics And Constitutional Ideals, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

As we think about endings, however, it is also useful to think about beginnings. That is what President Abraham Lincoln did in his Second Inaugural Address, delivered just five weeks before the surrender at Appomattox and his own assassination soon thereafter. All knew, he said reflecting sadly and thoughtfully on how the Civil War came about, that slavery was, "somehow," the cause. In fact, "somehow," however, lay puzzles, contradictions, and questions. The connections between slavery and the Civil War have concerned Americans ever since the events at Appomattox.

Money, Credit, And Banking In Colonial And Postcolonial West Africa, Akanmu G. Adebayo

Faculty Articles

Scholarship in African economic history has been dominated by a wave of revisionism lately. The degree of African indebtedness, the imperatives of loan repayment, and the long-term implications of ongoing political and economic changes, all make such a revision exigent indeed. Focusing on the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, this paper produces new evidence to reinterpret and redefine African precolonial financial institutions. The paper has two main parts. Part 1 focuses on the introduction of cowrie currency into Yorubaland and its impact on social stratification. Part 2 examines ajo, the savings institution, esusu, the rotating savings and credit associations (roscas), and …

Surabaya, City Of Work: A Socioeconomic History, 1900–2000, Howard Dick

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Surabaya is Indonesia’s second largest city but is not well known to the outside world. Yet in 1900, Surabaya was a bigger city than Jakarta and one of the main commercial centers of Asia. Collapse of sugar exports during the 1930s depression, followed by the Japanese occupation, revolution, and independence, brought on a long period of stagnation and retreat from the international economy. Not until the export boom of the 1990s did Surabaya regain prominence as Southeast Asia’s leading non–capital–city industrial area. Previous thinking on Indonesia is being reassessed in light of recent political and economic upheaval. Surabaya, City of …

Dynamic Interactions Among Stock Prices, Interest Rates, Real Activity And Money In Malaysia, Chin Sieng Chong

Student Works (2000-2009)

This study investigates the causal relations and dynamic interactions among stock prices, real interest rate, real money balances and real activity in Malaysia using monthly data from January 1987 to December 2001. This full sample period is also divided into two sub-periods for analysis. The first sub-period covers January 1987 to August 1998 while the second sub-period covers September 1998 to December 2001. The conventional unit root tests suggest that all variables are integrated of order one. This finding is further supported by the results of the unit root test which allows for a structural break in the series. All …

Bank Consolidation As A Strategic Response To The Banking Crisis : An Analysis Of The Choice Of Anchor Banks, Talagavathi R. Karapayah

Student Works (2000-2009)

The financial crisis of 1997 and the result1ng effects showed the weaknesses and vulnerability of the Malaysian banking system. In addition, impending globalization and liberalization of the financial sector has increased the urgency to strengthen the banking sector. Strengthening of the banking sector was to be realized by the merger of banking institutions under 10 anchor banks. The decision to consolidate the banking industry under 10 anchor banks was a necessary decision but the reasons for the choice of these 10 banks were not explained. This paper looked at some of the possible reasons for the selection of the particular …

Money Versus Morality: The Failure Of The Joint Boycott Council And The Anti-Nazi Boycott Movement In The United States, Michelle D. Ward

History Theses & Dissertations

The Nazis' wise to power elicited responses from a multitude of Jewish and non- Jewish organizations around the world. Like their respective counterparts, American Jewry adopted a variety of strategies both in the United States and abroad to combat Nazism. The purpose of this study is to examine the boycott movement instituted by the Joint Boycott Council. Although the boycott had a limited short-term effect on the German economy, it failed in its overall goals. It never contributed to an economic collapse in Germany or forced the Nazis to turn away from discriminatory practices and decrees targeting Jews and other …

A Little Adam Smith Is A Dangerous Thing, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2001

A Little Adam Smith Is A Dangerous Thing, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

Adam Smith was trying to counter medieval church theology, which held that any self-interested behavior was sinful and detrimental. Smith countered that self-interest could yield valuable outcomes for society as people pursued specialization and market trade. Much later these quotes would be used to justify the greedy and grasping personae of homo economicus, illustrating how a little Adam Smith can prove to be a dangerous thing. For example, Max Lerner in 1937 would say that Adam Smith "sanctified predatory impulses" and "gave a new dignity to greed." By the 1980s the movie Wall Street has the financial tycoon Gordon …

Can Futures Markets Quell Money Market Volatility? A Look At Us Money Markets Before And Since Commodities Futures Contracts, Joseph Santos Mar 2000

Can Futures Markets Quell Money Market Volatility? A Look At Us Money Markets Before And Since Commodities Futures Contracts, Joseph Santos

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper offers the introduction of futures markets, and the resulting substitution away from consignment contracts around 1874, as the reason why early US money markets are relatively more volatile, and far less seasonal, than their post-1874 counterparts. Until 1874, movements in interest rates were erratic and financial instabilities imparted relatively large shocks to money markets, particularly in the autumn months. After 1874, the effects of financial instabilities on interest rates diminished and the regularization of seasonal movements was attained. The paper demonstrates the plausibility of this claim using the standard mean-variance framework of the spot price volatility literature, where …

The Great Transition: The Dynamics Of Market Transitions And The Case Of Russia, 1991-1995, Jeffrey K. Hass

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The market transition in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union brings us back to essential issues that Marx and Weber addressed: the genesis of capitalism and the process of economic change. What is the transition and what does it involve - restructuring incentives, creating new laws, learning new culture, or creating new power structures? The answer partially depends on the particular transition (initial conditions, targets, actors' perceptions); but necessary general frameworks remain elusive, and current economic policies and analyses reveal that we understand little more about economic change than a century ago. Recent works on market transitions have furthered …
