Entry Costs And Economies Of Scope In Multiproduct Firms' Decisions, Xosé-Luís Varela-Irimia
Xosé-Luís Varela-Irimia
This paper computes the scope economies associated to the commercialization of several product varieties by multiproduct firms, in a dynamic oligopoly setting. Goods are differentiated and firms decide on firm entry and exit, product entry and exit, quality and pricing. The model is applied to the Spanish automobile market. Results show moderate entry costs and substantial cost reductions when introducing a second product as compared to the first, indicating that multiproduct firms benefit from strong economies of scope when expanding their range of products. However, those economies disappear after five products have been introduced, suggesting a U-shaped curve for entry …

Asymmetric-price adjustment is a common phenomenon in many markets around the world, particularly in retail gasoline markets. This paper studies the existence of this phenomenon in the retail gasoline market in the city of Santiago, Chile, using a data set of weekly gas station prices that covers a period of almost four years. We found that prices adjust asymmetrically, and the asymmetry is different for branded gas stations and unbranded stations. In addition, we found that the asymmetry for high-margin stations is statistically equivalent to that for low-margin stations. This evidence is suggestive of collusion as a rationale for the …

Public health decision-makers and researchers currently lack an evidence-based framework for describing, classifying, and comparing public health delivery systems based on their organizational components, operational characteristics, and division of responsibility. Related typologies developed in the health services sector have proven extremely valuable for policy and administrative decision-making as well as for ongoing research. Performance assessment, quality improvement, and accreditation activities are now blossoming in public health—adding urgency to the need for classification and comparison frameworks. This brief describes a newly-developed empirical typology for local public health systems and highlights its policy and managerial applications.

The Relationship Between Poverty And Economic Growth Revisited, Lonnie K. Stevans, David N. Sessions

It has been shown in prior research that increased economic growth reduces poverty. Authors have also found that the effect of growth in GDP on poverty growth has either diminished or remained unchanged over time and the 1980s economic expansion in the U.S. had no affect on poverty. Using a formal error-correction model, we find that increases in economic growth are significantly related to reductions in the poverty rate for all families. Specifically, GDP growth was found to have a more pronounced effect on poverty during the expansionary periods of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Other findings include …

We examine consumers’ valuation for Food Away From Home (FAFH) products with and without nutritional labels using experimental auctions. We presented subjects with three different nutritional information schemes: a EU type label, a US type label and a Traffic Light (TL) label. Our results indicate that subjects bid more for the products with nutritional labels. However, among products with nutritional information, subjects’ willingness to pay values differ depending on the type of nutritional label.

The complaints about insufficient private investment are frequent in Poland. Equally often do we hear the criticism of the monetary policy pointing to excessively high interest rates. This paper estimates the speed of upward adjustment of loan rates relative to downward adjustment, accounting for dierent market segments and products. The empirical results show that for the investment credit upward adjustment is fast, but downward adjustment essentially does not occur. Consumer credit products demonstrate positive values for the speed of both adjustments although still upward changes occur faster than downwards ones. This paper tests for efficiency in a betting market that offers high-frequency data, the Betfair betting exchange for wagering on outcomes of English Premier League soccer matches. We find clear evidence of rapid adjustment of prices to large disturbances (news). Full adjustment takes place within a one minute interval after the news. This suggests that this particular wagering market is not just efficient at pre-match prices but is also efficient in the face of events within games.

Multiple levels of government currently design and implement research and innovation programs both in the US and in Europe. Empirical analysis of interdependencies among programs has not been fully explored, however. Our contribution is a first step in understanding potential complementarities across R&D programs. Using a sample of Spanish manufacturing firms, we study the determinants of firms’ participation in national and in European level research programs and test for differences across programs. Our results suggest that firms’ participation in European and national R&D programs is largely driven by different factors. We interpret these results as suggesting that, ex-post, there is …

We apply recent results from the statistics literature to test for multimodality of worldwide distributions of several (unweighted and population-weighted) measures of labor productivity. Specifically, we employ Silverman (Bump) and Dip modality tests, calibrated to correct for their incorrect asymptotic levels. We show that test results are sensitive to the test statistic employed and to population weighting. But regardless of the statistical criterion used, multimodality is present throughout, or emerges during, our sample period (1960–2000). We also examine (a) movements of economies between modal clusters and (b) relationships between certain key development factors and multimodality of the productivity distribution.

Although the theoretical trade-off between the quantity and quality of children is well established, empirical evidence supporting such a causal relationship is limited. This chapter applies a recently developed nonparametric estimator of the conditional local average treatment effect to assess the sensitivity of the quantity-quality trade-off to functional form and parametric assumptions. Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey and controlling for potential endogeneity of fertility, we find mixed evidence supporting the trade-off.

Promoting cessation is a cornerstone of tobacco control efforts by public-health agencies. Economic information to support cessation programs has generally emphasized cost-effectiveness or the impact of cigarette pricing and smoking restrictions on quit rates. In contrast, this study provides empirical estimates of smoker preferences for increased efficacy and other attributes of smoking cessation therapies (SCTs). Choice data were collected through a national survey of Canadian smokers. We find systematic preference heterogeneity for therapy types and SCT attributes between light and heavy smokers, as well as random heterogeneity using random parameters logit models.
