Nondisclosure As A Contract Remedy: Explaining The Advance-Notice Puzzle, John T. Addison, John B. Chilton Jan 1997

Nondisclosure As A Contract Remedy: Explaining The Advance-Notice Puzzle, John T. Addison, John B. Chilton

Faculty Publications

Prior theoretical work predicts an underprovision of advance-notice contracts stemming from their enforcement costs. In the present model, it is rather the fundamental inability of workers to alienate their right to quit taken in conjunction with parameters central to job separation decisions that jointly determine the mix of notice and no-notice contracts observed in equilibrium. Not all equilibrium contracts are efficient, but there is no underprovision of notice. Mandating notice cannot improve on joint value and indeed may reduce it. Furthermore, although a mandate can be merely redistributive, there are cases in which it harms all parties.

Price Theory And Vertical Restraints: A Misunderstood Relation, Alan J. Meese Jan 1997

Price Theory And Vertical Restraints: A Misunderstood Relation, Alan J. Meese

Faculty Publications

The Chicago School of antitrust analysis has exerted a strong influence over the law of vertical restraints in the past two decades, leading the Supreme Court to abandon much of its traditional hostility toward such agreements. Chicago's success has provoked a vigorous response from Populists, who support the traditional approach. Chicago, Populists claim, has improperly relied upon neoclassical price theory to inform the normative and descriptive assumptions that drive its analysis of trade restraints generally and of vertical restraints in particular. This reliance is misplaced, Populists assert, because the real world departs from that portrayed by price-theoretic models and, at …

The All-Pay Auction With Complete Information, Michael R. Baye, Dan Kovenock, Casper G. De Vries Jan 1996

The All-Pay Auction With Complete Information, Michael R. Baye, Dan Kovenock, Casper G. De Vries

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In a (first price) all-pay auction, bidders simultaneously submit bids for an item. All players forfeit their bids, and the high bidder receives the item. This auction is widely used in economics to model rent seeking, R&D races, political contests, and job promotion tournaments. We fully characterize equilibrium for this class of games, and show that the set of equilibria is much larger than has been recognized in the literature. When there are more than two players, for instance, we show that even when the auction is symmetric there exists a continuum of asymmetric equilibria. Moreover, for economically important configurations …

Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe: Applying Traditional Models Of Fdi To The Transitional Countries Of Eastern Europe, Jonathan Austin Kerr Jan 1996

Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe: Applying Traditional Models Of Fdi To The Transitional Countries Of Eastern Europe, Jonathan Austin Kerr

Honors Papers

An empirical analysis is used to determine whether the factors that normally explain FDI flows to developing countries are also suitable to explain FDI flows to the developing countries of Eastern Europe for the years 1988-1992. It was found that a typical set of explanatory variables which explain FDI flows to non Eastern Europe developing countries very well, is not a useful set of determinants for FDI flows to Eastern Europe. Conclusions are drawn concerning the extent to which these results reflect the current state of political and economic transition taking place in Eastern Europe.

Slavery, Adam Smith’S Economic Vision And The Invisible Hand, Spencer J. Pack Jan 1996

Slavery, Adam Smith’S Economic Vision And The Invisible Hand, Spencer J. Pack

Economics Faculty Publications

Smith was against slavery on moral and economic grounds. The "invisible hand" in societies which allow slavery, operates in such a way that increases in the wealth of the rich, leads to increased misery for the poor free citizens as well as for the slaves themselves. It seems that the beneficial workings of the "invisible hand" are dependent upon commercial societies which arc not based upon the institution of slavery.

Towards Improved Competitiveness Of The Economies Of The West African Economic And Monetary Union, E. O. Akinnifesi Aug 1995

Towards Improved Competitiveness Of The Economies Of The West African Economic And Monetary Union, E. O. Akinnifesi

CBN Occasional Papers

As is well known, a monetary union with a common currency confers on its members the advantage of fixed exchange rate and consequent relative price stability. While these advantages held sway up to the mid-1980s in the case of the seven member countries of the CEA franc zone in West Africa, the vulnerability of the zone to external shocks became manifest from the second half of the 1980s. Fairly persistent overvaluation of the CEA franc over time had weakened the competitiveness of the export sector leading to several economic problems including domestic and external debt arrears, capital flight, and negative …

Conference On The 1992 Cable Tv Act - 1994, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

The CITI conference organizers have asked me to address the constitutionality of sections 12 and 19 of the new Cable Television Act. Speaking quite generally, these provisions purport to promote competition in the distribution of programming by prohibiting certain exclusive licenses and by prohibiting certain behaviors that could lead to exclusive licenses.

Explaining The Growth Performances Of Asian Developing Economies, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

No matter how it is measured, the growth performance of the newly industrializing economies (NIEs) stands out. That of the Southeast Asian group, with the exception of the Philippines, and that of China is also impressive. The South Asian countries have done much less well, with countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America even further behind...

Avoiding Takings “Accidents”: A Torts Perspective On Takings Law, Eric Kades Jan 1994

Avoiding Takings “Accidents”: A Torts Perspective On Takings Law, Eric Kades

Faculty Publications

Viewing the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment as a form of insurance appeals to our intuition. The government, like fire, does not often "take" property, but when faced with extraordinary risk property owners naturally desire compensation. Recent scholarship, however, has dissolved the attractiveness of this perspective. This literature, through economic analysis, claims that the Takings Clause should be repealed and replaced with private takings insurance. This is the "no-compensation" result. This article argues that the insurance-based understanding of the just compensation requirement can be preserved without reaching the surprising no-compensation result. The intuitive appeal of understanding the Takings Clause …

Could Distance Be A Proxy For Severity-Of-Illness? A Comparison Of Hospital Costs In Distant And Local Patients., H G. Welch, E B. Larson, W P. Welch

Dartmouth Scholarship

We test the hypothesis that hospital costs, after adjusting for DRG mix, are higher in distant patients than in local patients. Data were obtained from the Washington State Commission Hospital Abstract Reporting System (CHARS) and included all patients discharged from 15 metropolitan hospitals in the state of Washington during fiscal year 1987 (N = 181,072).

Attitudes Towards The Market And The State In Post-Communist Europe, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This paper examines the level and sources of suppon for the market-oriented reforms in East-Central Europe and the relationship between these attitudes and political trust in the governments. The analysis is based on data collected in a common public opinion survey on social, economic and political justice implemented in the spring and summer of 1991 in eleven countries: Russia. Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany (east and west), Holland, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States.

The survey results suggest some measure of caution and concern regarding the possibilities for a successful transition to market democracy in the former …

New Economic Policy And Public Enterprises, R K Mishra, R Nandagopal Jun 1992

New Economic Policy And Public Enterprises, R K Mishra, R Nandagopal

IIMB Management Review

Encouraged by the sweeping economic reforms taking place around the world and compelled by its structural economic distortions, India is charting out a new path for its economic development. The country is evolving a New Economic policy (NEP)-to break the vicious circle Of poverty, inequity, unemployment, and slow rate of economic growth. NEP spells out package of reformatory measures in respect of Public Enterprises (PEs) contained in a series of pronouncements incorporated in Budget Documents and Economic Survey for 1991—92 and 1992—93, Industrial policy Reselution Of July 1991, and Letter on Development Policy from the Union Finance Ministe to the World …

Privatisation, Prasanna Chandra Jun 1992

Privatisation, Prasanna Chandra

IIMB Management Review

The privatisation programmes of various countries have been motivated primarily by a desire to improve efficiency, generate resources, and promote popular capitalism. It has worked reasonably well in countries with well-developed capital markets. There are several models of privatisation with certain costs and benefits associated with them. Meaningful privatisation in India calls for phasing it over a period of time in a well thought out manner and the same has been dealt in detail in this paper.
