The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman Jan 2000

The Economics Of Residential Solid Waste Management, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper provides a broad overview of recent trends in solid waste and recycling, related public policy issues, and the economics literature devoted to these topics. Public attention to solid waste and recycling has increased dramatically over the past decade both in the United States and in Europe. In response, economists have developed models to help policy makers choose the efficient mix of policy levers to regulate solid waste and recycling activities. Economists have also employed different kinds of data to estimate the factors that contribute to the generation of residential solid waste and recycling and to estimate the effectiveness …

Will The Real Adam Smith Please Stand Up?: Teaching Social Economics In The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 1999

Will The Real Adam Smith Please Stand Up?: Teaching Social Economics In The Principles Course, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

Part of the difficulty of introducing social economics into the principles course is the perception that social economics is anathema to mainstream economics. As noted by Warren Samuels, however, "neoclassical economics is already a form of social economics" despite its "pretensions of methodological individualism and value-neutrality". Heilbroner also makes the case that the " ... the preponderance of great economists were aware of economics as explanation systems of particular socio-economic formations." Like it or not, economists err in omitting from their models what McCloskey calls "S" variables--variables representing the "social embeddedness" of values which direct human choices.

IIMB Management Review

The opening up of the economy has brought in its wake a surfeit of international brands that are now available to Indian customers. Many of these brands are internationally strong and it is no surprise that the qualitystarved Indian consumer is increasingly turning to these trusted names. What happens to the desi brands that have been assiduously built up by business houses within the country? The Round Table this time looks at this issue and seeks to investigate which way Indian brands are headed. Among the articles presented in this issue are two that address issues relating to rewards. Abhoy …

Fiscal Support For India’S Liberalisation - Is It Adequate?, Shyamal Roy Jul 1998

Fiscal Support For India’S Liberalisation - Is It Adequate?, Shyamal Roy

IIMB Management Review

For assessing fiscal policy support to India's economic liberalisation process, the quality of fiscal management is far more important than just monitoring the aggregates. Going by this framework of analysis, government expenditure and borrowing patterns have had a negative impact on the liberalisation process. In fact, the fiscal management of the economy over the years was so complete that it left little room for manoeuvrability in the fiscal variables in the budget 1998-99. Shyamal Roy examines budget 1998-99 and finds that though it may fail to achieve the fiscal targets, it does contain some ideas which if pursued vigorously can …

Self-Enforcing Union Contracts: Efficient Investment And Employment, John T. Addison, John B. Chilton Jul 1998

Self-Enforcing Union Contracts: Efficient Investment And Employment, John T. Addison, John B. Chilton

Faculty Publications

Baldwin (1983) asks whether a firm can credibly deter union opportunism that would lead to underinvestment. We show that the punishments Baldwin considers credible exclude tougher threats that only have the appearance of being self-destructive. If the firm's discount factor is sufficiently close to one, union opportunism can indeed be deterred. Moreover, we show that given the firm's discount factor, a shorter lifetime of capital does not necessarily promote efficiency. Although, as Baldwin emphasizes, it does enhance the firm's ability to punish union opportunism, it also creates adverse incentives for the firm to engage in opportunistic employment cuts.

Economic Crisis And Reform In Bulgaria, 1989-92, Jonathan B. Wight, M. Louise Fox Jan 1998

Economic Crisis And Reform In Bulgaria, 1989-92, Jonathan B. Wight, M. Louise Fox

Economics Faculty Publications

Bulgaria's economy began a deep and prolonged collapse in 1989, exactly one hundred years after the noted Bulgarian novelist Ivan Vazov published his stirring novel opposing the tyranny of the Ottomans and warning of the mistaken road of socialism. The 1989 collapse was partially a reflection of the external political upheavals among Bulgaria's trading partners in Eastern Europe, which were rejecting socialist principles. But it was also a reflection of the weaknesses imbedded in the economy after 30 years of central planning. Political instability within Bulgaria, market reforms, and attempts at privatization contributed further to economic uncertainty resulting in a …

A Study Of The Stochastic Behavior Of Durable Goods Consumption, Alexander Lebedinsky Aug 1997

A Study Of The Stochastic Behavior Of Durable Goods Consumption, Alexander Lebedinsky

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The author of this thesis examines the stochastic behavior of durables consumption in the rational expectations/permanent income hypothesis framework. The testing in this paper parallels the studies conducted by other researchers, who basing their work mainly on quarterly data rejected the frictionless rational expectations/permanent income hypothesis. The distinctive feature of this thesis is that the models are examined using monthly instead of quarterly data. The results of the estimation are compared to the results based on quarterly data. The results show that estimates obtained using monthly data seem to be more consistent with the frictionless rational expectations/permanent income hypothesis than …

Monetary Policy Preferences Of Individual Fomc Members: A Content Analysis Of The Memoranda Of Discussion, Henry W. Chappell Jr., Thomas M. Havrilesky, Rob Roy Mcgregor Aug 1997

Monetary Policy Preferences Of Individual Fomc Members: A Content Analysis Of The Memoranda Of Discussion, Henry W. Chappell Jr., Thomas M. Havrilesky, Rob Roy Mcgregor

Faculty Publications

The Memoranda of Discussion provide detailed records of Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting deliberations. Procedures are developed for coding the textual data in the Memoranda and assessing the reliability of those codings. The codings are then used in the estimation of parameters of individual FOMC members' reaction functions. Data from the 1970 to 1976 period are employed in the estimation. In the future, similar methods could be used to analyze newly released transcripts of FOMC meetings held after 1976.

Adam Smith On The Virtues: A Partial Resolution Of The Adam Smith Problem, Spencer J. Pack

Economics Faculty Publications

Adam Smith's definition of justice as a moral virtue based on the "passion" of resentment in 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' (1759), despite seeming contradictions, supports his analysis of an acquisitive, commercial society in 'The Wealth of Nations' (1774) partly by precluding the concept of a just price.

Gatt, Dispute Settlement And Cooperation: A Reply, Dan Kovenock, Marie Thursby Jan 1997

Gatt, Dispute Settlement And Cooperation: A Reply, Dan Kovenock, Marie Thursby

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In our 1992 paper, we analyzed GATT and its dispute settlement procedure (DSP) in the context of a supergame model of international trade featuring both explicit (GATT) and implicit (non-GATT) agreements. Our paper departed from the previous economics literature on GATT enforcement (see, for instance Hungerford (1991) and Ludema (1990)) by incorporating the ``twin engines of international obligation and retaliation'' (Hudec, 1990). International obligation imposed a cost of violating an explicit international agreement, such as GATT, while retaliation could take place either within the rules stipulated by the international agreement or by punishment outside of the agreement. In Section 2 …
