This dissertation comprises three independent essays that contribute to understanding the impacts of monetary policy announcements on financial markets and the banking industry.

The first essay studies a natural language analysis of FOMC statements to identify monetary policy and its effects on financial markets. Using structural topic modeling, in the first essay I identify three dimensions of Fed monetary policy announcements: inflation outlook, state of the economy, and policy stance factors. This article focuses on the qualitative information released by the Fed through the FOMC statement, which has previously been overlooked in favor of quantitative communication such as the Green …

We study the gradient wild bootstrap-based inference for instrumental variable quantile regressions in the framework of a small number of large clusters in which the number of clusters is viewed as fixed, and the number of observations for each cluster diverges to infinity. For the Wald inference, we show that our wild bootstrap Wald test, with or without studentization using the cluster-robust covariance estimator (CRVE), controls size asymptotically up to a small error as long as the parameter of endogenous variable is strongly identified in at least one of the clusters. The Interaction Effects Of Fintech And Bank Lending On Growth: Evidence From The Asean Region, Tan Swee Liang

This study examined the interaction effects of traditional bank lending and emerging fintech credit on economic growth in six ASEAN economies from 2013 to 2020. Using a two-way fixed effects (FE) model and the panel-corrected standard error (PCSE) method, the study found a statistically significant and positive interaction effect between bank lending and fintech credit. Specifically, fintech credit became increasingly important in shaping economic growth as bank lending ratios exceeded a certain threshold. Countries with high bank lending ratios experienced greater GDP per capita growth when accompanied by greater fintech credit. To explain the role of value capture in Singapore’s progress, I will first provide some background information on Singapore and its housing sector. I will then take you on a journey back to the 1960s to show how we established our present institutional arrangements for land and housing. I will next describe how housing policies have evolved over the past six decades in response to changing contexts. Finally, I will conclude with the fiscal implications of successful value capture. Where relevant, I will indicate how Singapore’s policies align with George’s views.

Digital Payments And Consumption: Evidence From The 2016 Demonetization In India, Sumit Agarwal, Pulak Ghosh, Jing Li, Tianyue Ruan

We study how consumer spending responds to digital payments, using the differential switch to digital payments across consumers induced by the sudden 2016 Indian Demonetization for identification. Usage of digital payments rose by 3.38 percentage points and monthly spending increased by 3% for an additional 10 percentage points in prior cash dependence. Spending remained elevated even when cash availability recovered. Robustness analyses show that the spending response is not driven by income shocks, credit supply, price changes, or consumers' moving to the formal market. We provide evidence that digital payments increase consumer spending due to subdued salience.

In my dissertation, I explore the effect of networks and gender dynamics on corporate finance. In my first essay, I examine the effects of personal network on insider trading decisions. Using COVID-19 as a shock to test personal network effect, I find individuals were influenced by information about COVID-19 provided by the members of their personal networks. S&P 1500 insiders whose personal networks contained higher fractions of socially connected individuals from countries affected by early stages of COVID-19 were more likely to sell shares of their firms in the period preceding the U.S. stock market decline, and they are less …

This research analyzes the spatial correlation between freshwater aquaculture production in Magelang Regency and the social and economic welfare of the community. Utilizing the Indeks Moran, LISA, and bivariate LISA methods, the results indicate inter-district correlations in freshwater fish production with a clustered distribution pattern. Mungkid and Muntilan districts are identified as production centers and hotspots. Freshwater fish production is also associated with community welfare, showing correlations with farmer groups despite a scattered distribution. However, the analysis of freshwater fish production and freshwater fish-based SMEs reveals a strong spatial relationship, particularly in Mungkid district, a central area fostering local development.

Indonesia has initiated trade liberalization to boost the coffee export performance in the international market through trade agreements (FTA). However, Indonesian coffee export performance tends to decline. This study aims to analyze the effect of Indonesia’s FTA with its trading partners and other determinants of Indonesian coffee exports. This research employs a modified export approach gravity model with PPML estimation. The result shows that the FTA implementation generally can promote Indonesian coffee export, implying the export creation effect. Therefore, inward and outward-looking strategies are necessary to further boost the export creation effect on Indonesian coffee.

Indonesia has an economic transformation. However, it tends to experience deindustrialization and development inclusivity challenges. This research examines the influence of industrialization and inclusivity to improve welfare in the short and long term. The analytical method is Autoregressive Distributed Lag, using province-level panel data from 2012–2021. Based on results, industrialization has not significantly affected welfare improvement in the short term. Inclusivity has no significant impact in the short term, but it has a negative direction. However, in the long term, industrialization and inclusivity positively and significantly increase welfare. This confirms that industrialization and inclusivity require time to create welfare.

In this new era of globalisation, all countries including Indonesia are targeting poverty alleviation to help people achieve welfare. Furthermore, this study empirically examines the impact of government spending, FDI, economic growth, and industrial growth on poverty. This research uses the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method. The data used is time series data from 1972 to 2021 obtained from the World Development Indicator website. Private digital currency is no longer limited to shadow banking issues but has also entered shadow central banking, putting Bank Indonesia to adopt the CBDC. This study aims to determine the effect of macroeconomic, accessibility, and demographic aspects on CBDC implementation, as well as the impact of publicity on changes in the behavior of economic actors in using CBDC in Indonesia. The results of the study show that GRDP, gini ratio, ICT, and bank accounts have an effect on CBDC. Publicity affects changes in the behavior of economic actors in increasing the conversion of fiat money to CBDC.

This paper revisits the questions posed by Arbeit and Warren in their 2013 study, "Labor market penalties for foreign degrees among college-educated immigrants," using updated data from the 2018 National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG). The original study, which analyzed data from 2003, focused on the economic and employment disadvantages faced by immigrants with degrees from foreign institutions in an increasingly globalized workforce. The high prevalence of teenage smoking in Indonesia is a serious problem. This study aims to analyze the influence of the smoking behavior of close individuals to teenagers, including parents, family, and social environment, on the smoking behavior of teenagers in Indonesia. Using the National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) 2021 Data, with a sample of 187,277 adolescent individuals. The results of this study indicate that the smoking behavior of parents, family, and a smoking environment has a significant positive influence on teenage smoking behavior. This fact sheet focuses on state-level data on first year earning and debt for five Mountain West states: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.

Inflation Targeting, Output Stabilization, And Real Indeterminacy In Monetary Models With An Interest Rate Rule, Konstantin Platonov

Central banks set the nominal interest rate to target inflation and stabilize output. In monetary models, monetary policy affects output directly via the wealth effect. I show that in these models, the response of the central bank to fluctuations in output may induce real indeterminacy even if the Taylor principle is satisfied. I find that the determinacy conditions depend on the interest elasticity of output and generally, the Taylor principle is neither necessary nor sufficient for determinacy. This is in stark contrast with the New Keynesian model where a sufficiently strong policy response to inflation or output usually ensures determinacy.
