Tas Orders, Innovations And Challenges In Futures Markets, Fabio Mattos Jul 2023

Tas Orders, Innovations And Challenges In Futures Markets, Fabio Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

Futures contracts and futures exchanges were developed a long time ago in the process of evolution of commodity trading. They were created with the purpose of facilitating the buying and selling of commodities. Despite challenges along the way, they helped make commodity trading faster, easier, and more efficient for many buyers and sellers. Still today, futures exchanges are constantly looking for new ways to adjust to new developments in commodity markets and further facilitate trading. After all, as we have previously discussed in this space, futures exchanges provide a service to buyers and sellers, i.e., the marketplace to trade futures …

Effects Of Technological Progress And Productivity On Economic Growth In Uganda: A Generalized Least Squares Approach, Jimmy Alani, Bruno Yawe, John Mutenyo Jul 2023

Effects Of Technological Progress And Productivity On Economic Growth In Uganda: A Generalized Least Squares Approach, Jimmy Alani, Bruno Yawe, John Mutenyo

Arab Economic and Business Journal

The paper makes use of the generalized least squares method to examine the effects of technological progress and productivity on economic growth in Uganda during the 1970 to 2020 period. Data employed in conducting empirical analyses were collected from the United Nations data bank. The paper is based on the neoclassical growth model and Cobb–Douglas production function with decreasing returns to scale because production often takes place within the feasible region of production. Therefore, we focus on the range of diminishing (but non–negative) productivity of the factors of production. We also examine the effects of some determinants of technology (e.g., …

Housing Fever In Australia 2020-2023: Insights From An Econometric Thermometer, Shuping Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips Jul 2023

Housing Fever In Australia 2020-2023: Insights From An Econometric Thermometer, Shuping Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Australian housing markets experienced widespread and, in some cases, extraordi-nary growth in prices between 2020 and 2023. Using recently developed methodology that accounts for fundamental economic drivers, we assess the existence and degree of speculative behaviour as well as the timing of exuberance and downturns in these markets. Our findings indicate that speculative behaviour was indeed present in six of the eight capital cities at some time over the period studied. The sequence of events in this nation-wide housing bubble began in the Brisbane market and concluded in Melbourne, Canberra, and Hobart following the interest rate hike implemented by the …

Policy Evaluation With Nonlinear Trended Outcomes: Covid-19 Vaccination Rates In The Us, Lynn Bergeland Morgan, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul Jul 2023

Policy Evaluation With Nonlinear Trended Outcomes: Covid-19 Vaccination Rates In The Us, Lynn Bergeland Morgan, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper points out some pitfalls in the use of two-way fixed effects (TWFE) regressions when outcome variables contain nonlinear or stochastic trend components. When a policy change shifts trend paths of outcome variables conventional TWFE estimation can distort results and invalidate inference. A robust solution is proposed by identifying determinants of dynamic club membership based on the idea of relative convergence, which can be assessed empirically by the so-called ‘logt’ test (Phillips & Sul, 2007a). Club membership in each time period is estimated by recursive regression, transforming outcome variables to statistically stable, stationary status. Time varying club membership can …

Cash Usage In Poland In 2020: Insights Into The Role Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Spatial Aspects, Radosław Kotkowski, Arkadiusz Manikowski Jul 2023

Cash Usage In Poland In 2020: Insights Into The Role Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Spatial Aspects, Radosław Kotkowski, Arkadiusz Manikowski

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

The study explores the factors likely to induce Polish customers to pay by cash, instead of payment cards, for goods and services they are purchasing. The basis of our investigation is microdata obtained in 2020, during the “Payment Habits in Poland in 2020” study, which was conducted by Narodowy Bank Polski (National Bank of Poland) in 2020. The analysis is performed using the two-stage Heckman approach. In the first stage, card adoption factors are analyzed using a probit model; then, in the second stage, the OLS model is employed to analyze the propensity to pay by cash, despite having a …

The Reluctant Feminist: Angela Merkel’S Cautious Leadership, Ls Gaiek, Marlyn Garcia Jul 2023

The Reluctant Feminist: Angela Merkel’S Cautious Leadership, Ls Gaiek, Marlyn Garcia

The Scholarship Without Borders Journal

Abstract: What does it mean to be a modern feminist global leader today? Global leadership research is growing, but less research focuses on female leaders, even though the 21st century thus far contains a significant rise of female leaders. Angela Merkel’s infamously historic reticence and aversion, concerning speaking about feminism, irrevocably dissolves in an interview in January of 2019. This interview offers a glimpse into Angela Merkel’s cageyness, and provides an intimate insight into her circumspect perspective concerning feminism. This article aims to explore barriers and challenges to Angela Merkel’s rise as a global leader, how crisis forged and …

Could The Epa Cause The Next Farm Financial Crisis?, Jeffrey Stokes, Jim Jansen Jul 2023

Could The Epa Cause The Next Farm Financial Crisis?, Jeffrey Stokes, Jim Jansen

Cornhusker Economics

The inflation that crept into the economy in 2022 surprised many since it had not been seen for about 40 years. What has also not been seen for about 40 years is the type of farm-level financial stress causing some quarter of a million farms lost, the devastation of whole rural communities, and a compromised community banking sector and Farm Credit System (FCS). In 1981, as the Federal Reserve’s tighter monetary policy began to take effect, U.S. farmland value nominally peaked at about $785b. By 1985, it had fallen by about 31% from the peak resulting in a sector debt-to-asset …

Study On The Effectiveness Of Environmental Regulations And Its Spatial Spillover In China’S High-Quality Human Habitat Cities, Chuansheng Wu, Weixuan Fan, Lingling Qi, Levent Kutlu Jul 2023

Study On The Effectiveness Of Environmental Regulations And Its Spatial Spillover In China’S High-Quality Human Habitat Cities, Chuansheng Wu, Weixuan Fan, Lingling Qi, Levent Kutlu

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

High-quality human habitat cities in developing countries are facing new urban environmental problems as a result of the significant resource footprints of wealthy urban populations in the process of rapid urbanization. These areas are desperate for solutions to the coexistence of old and new pollutants, as well as inorganic and organic compounds. The authors of this study propose a comprehensive framework and methods for evaluating the effectiveness of environmental regulation in high-quality human habitat cities for a state-of-the-art path of improving environmental governance and optimizing environmental policies in these regions. This paper aims to analyze the effectiveness of environmental regulation …

Privacy Preserving Signals, Philipp Strack, Kai Hao Yang Jul 2023

Privacy Preserving Signals, Philipp Strack, Kai Hao Yang

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A signal is privacy-preserving with respect to a collection of privacy sets, if the posterior probability assigned to every privacy set remains unchanged conditional on any signal realization. We characterize the privacy-preserving signals for arbitrary state space and arbitrary privacy sets. A signal is privacy-preserving if and only if it is a garbling of a reordered quantile signal. These signals are equivalent to couplings, which in turn lead to a characterization of optimal privacy-preserving signals for a decisionmaker. We demonstrate the applications of this characterization in the contexts of algorithmic fairness, price discrimination, and information design.

Path Dependence As A Path To Consumer Surplus And Loyalty, Sherzod B. Akhundjanov, Ben O. Smith, Max St. Brown Jul 2023

Path Dependence As A Path To Consumer Surplus And Loyalty, Sherzod B. Akhundjanov, Ben O. Smith, Max St. Brown

In the technology and design industries, one product builds on another: A smart tele- vision enhances a smart phone. However, due to complementary features, the utility that is gained by owning both products from the same firm is greater than the sum of the two products’ utility if purchased from separate firms. Aftermarkets suggest that the margins of the second product would increase. Instead, we show that the firms’ complementary utility offset each other, which results in reduced prices. Further, consumer purchase behavior is a function of the product release order; given a different release schedule, some consumers would purchase …

Household Charitable Giving Among U.S. Working-Class Families, 1918-1919, Joanna Short Jul 2023

Household Charitable Giving Among U.S. Working-Class Families, 1918-1919, Joanna Short

Economics: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This paper examines household charitable giving in the period just before the New Deal increased government involvement in social services. The 1918-19 BLS Cost of Living Survey provides a window on middle-class giving to church, charity, and patriotic organizations, as well as investment in Liberty Bonds. A lognormal hurdle model is used to estimate the probability of any giving, and the amount given, to different types of organizations. From this, we estimate income elasticities of giving and the substitutability of giving to different types of organizations. The results are compared to findings from studies on modern giving. I find that …

The Effect Of China Retaliatory Tariffs On Donations From Farmers In The Central Region Of The United States, Jiayi Chen Jul 2023

The Effect Of China Retaliatory Tariffs On Donations From Farmers In The Central Region Of The United States, Jiayi Chen

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

The Trump administration launched a series of actions to raise import tariffs against major U.S. trading partners, particularly China. In response, China retaliated against the U.S. by imposing higher tariffs targeting exports produced in Republican-supporting counties. Soybeans and corn are two targeted agricultural exports with the same tariff rates. However, due to the drastic difference in export amount to China, farmers in counties dominating in producing soybeans would have more negative economic impacts than counties mainly producing corn. In this paper, I use individual farmers’ donations to examine the effect of this retaliatory tariff shock from the trade war on …

An Analysis Of Socio-Economic, Lifestyle, And Health Care Determinants Of National Life Expectancies, Annie Feldman Jul 2023

An Analysis Of Socio-Economic, Lifestyle, And Health Care Determinants Of National Life Expectancies, Annie Feldman

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

Life expectancy is an important indicator of a population’s health and anticipated life-quality. Life expectancies have continued to rise in recent history, but there is great variance between countries. This paper analyzes potential reasons for country variation in the average human lifespan. Regression analysis is performed on data from 156 countries to infer explanations of observed variance. In this model, I chose factors from past research that have been highly significant. When selecting variables, I considered socio-economic, lifestyle, and health care financing measures. To explain national life expectancies, I tested variables including education, income, urban-to-rural living, alcohol and tobacco consumption, …

Search Models Of Money: Alternative Means-Of Payment And Consumer Behaviour With Credit, Kheng Tat Marcus Tan Jul 2023

Search Models Of Money: Alternative Means-Of Payment And Consumer Behaviour With Credit, Kheng Tat Marcus Tan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of three chapters on Search Models of Money.

The first chapter is a review of recent advances in Search Models of Money. It reviews the Lagos and Wright (2005) framework which is the workhorse of many modern search models with applications to models with Competing Media of Exchange to Fiat Currency, and models with Money and Credit. We trace the history of the development of search models of money from the first generation to present day. We highlight recent developments that address puzzles such as the coexistence of money in an environment where an asset serves as …

Revisiting The Exchange Rate Pass- Through To Domestic Prices In Egypt, Ahmed Abdelhamid Jul 2023

Revisiting The Exchange Rate Pass- Through To Domestic Prices In Egypt, Ahmed Abdelhamid

Theses and Dissertations

Exchange rate pass-through (ERPT) refers to the extent to which the movements in the exchange rate influence domestic prices. This study revisits the exchange rate pass-through in Egypt using quarter data from 2006 to 2022. The study employs a Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) model to estimate the degree of ERPT. The findings suggest that ERPT in Egypt is incomplete, meaning that changes in the exchange rate do not fully pass through to consumer prices. The study also investigates the role of the money supply in absorbing the shocks in the nominal exchange rate. The study has important implications for policymakers …

Temperature And Convictions: Evidence From India, Terry Ann Craigie, Vis Taraz, Mariyana Zapryanova Jul 2023

Temperature And Convictions: Evidence From India, Terry Ann Craigie, Vis Taraz, Mariyana Zapryanova

Economics: Faculty Publications

High temperatures have been shown to affect human cognition and decision-making in a variety of settings. In this paper, we explore the extent to which higher temperatures affect judicial decision-making in India. We use data on judicial decisions from the Indian eCourt platform, merged with high-resolution gridded daily weather data. We estimate causal effects by leveraging a fixed effects framework. We find that high daily maximum temperatures raise the likelihood of convictions and these results are robust to numerous controls and specifications. Our findings contribute to a growing literature that documents that the negative impacts of rising temperatures are often …

The Effect Of Safety Net Generosity On Maternal Mental Health And Risky Health Behaviors, Lucie Schmidt, Lara D. Shore-Sheppard, Tara Watson Jul 2023

The Effect Of Safety Net Generosity On Maternal Mental Health And Risky Health Behaviors, Lucie Schmidt, Lara D. Shore-Sheppard, Tara Watson

Economics: Faculty Publications

Single mothers are more likely to experience mental health problems and stress-related negative health behaviors, but a more generous safety net may improve these outcomes. We use a simulated safety net eligibility approach that accounts for interactions across safety net programs and relies on changing policies across states and time to identify causal effects of safety net generosity on psychological distress and risky behaviors of single mothers. Results suggest that a more generous safety net is protective of maternal mental health: a $1000 increase to the simulated potential combined cash and food benefit package reduces severe psychological distress by 8.4 …

Monitoring The Philippine Economy State Of The Economy Report, Mitzie Irene P. Conchada, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Jesus Felipe, Desher Edgar Empeño, Brendan Emmanuel A. Miranda

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The Philippine economy recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic during 2022. It posted a very high annual growth rate, 7.6%, although this must be understood in the context of a low base. AKI’s State of the Economy Report focuses on three issues in the context of the new Administration’s 8-Point Socioeconomic Agenda and the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028: growth, inflation, and the fiscal deficit and national debt. Overall, we have a positive view of the economy over the medium and long-term. However, we argue that:

-The focus of economic policy has to shift decisively toward changing the structure of the economy …

It appears the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) is a fait accompli. As we write, our finance officials are in New York and Toronto, pitching the MIF to international bankers and representatives of Middle East sovereign wealth funds. This means once President Marcos, Jr. affixes his signature, a newly-created Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC) will pool, before the year is over, PhP 75 billion in seed capital from the LandBank and Development Bank of the Philippines. With a further PhP 50 billion plus two full years of dividends from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), its nine directors, all presidential appointees, will …

Economic Transformation And Growth In The Philippines: An Analysis Of Political Settlements, Rents, And Deals, Jesus Felipe, Desher Edgar Empeño, Brendan Emmanuel A. Miranda

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The main gateway for the Philippines to develop and become an upper-middle-income economy—and eventually, a high-income economy—is to expedite the shift of workers out of agriculture and to produce and export more complex products with a higher income elasticity of demand. The actual growth rate is constrained by the balance-of-payments equilibrium growth rate, about 6%—the maximum the country can attain without incurring balance-of-payments problems. We use the Pritchett-Sen-Werker political-economy framework to analyze the role of different types of firms and the deals environment during successive Philippine administrations until the current one. Due to their economic size and political power, only …

What Russia-Ukraine Conflict May Imply For The Future Of Dollar-Centered Monetary System, Jesus Felipe Jul 2023

What Russia-Ukraine Conflict May Imply For The Future Of Dollar-Centered Monetary System, Jesus Felipe

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

AGLOBAL financial summit held in Paris some days ago reached a "new" global pact to help developing countries deal with poverty, climate change and debt. Part of the solution? More "funds," that is, debt. Ironically, nobody at the Paris summit questioned the current monetary system, which is at the root of the debt problem.

Coincidentally, a recent article in the journal Real-World Economics Review (http://www.paecon.net/PAEReview/issue104/Spano) argues that one of the potential consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war could be the demise of the US dollar as the international unit of account. If this materializes, the international monetary system may change significantly. …

The Impact Of Proportional Remittances On The Macroeconomy: Analysis From An Overlapping Generations Model For The Philippines, John Paolo Rivera Jul 2023

The Impact Of Proportional Remittances On The Macroeconomy: Analysis From An Overlapping Generations Model For The Philippines, John Paolo Rivera

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The discourse on micro-foundations linking microeconomic and macroeconomic principles to establish relationships in macroeconomic models have been increasing, one of which is through an Overlapping Generations Model. From its standard form, it has been extended to incorporate migration and remittances. We contribute to the discussion by introducing proportional remittances in the model and trace its effects on the trajectory of aggregate income, consumption, capital stock, and factor prices. Calibration results showed that increases in proportional remittances induce higher aggregate income, consumption, and capital accumulation paths, albeit varying degrees with respect to the elasticity of substitution between current and future consumption. …

Defining inclusive growth as growth that has benefited the households who have the lowest human capital levels, this study examines the inclusiveness of economic growth in the Philippines in the past two decades. Combining information from the Labor Force Survey and Family Income and Expenditures Survey for various years, including a panel of 6,500 households from 2003 to 2009, this study classifies households into ordered groups based on human capital level, then compares the performance of the various groups in terms of various employment, income, and expenditure outcomes over time. It finds the evidence to be mixed, although the weight …

Quality Of Growth And Poverty In Low Income Countries: The Role Of Manufacturing, Raul V. Fabella, Sarah Lynne S. Daway-Ducanes, Geoffrey Ducanes

Both the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which ended in 2015, and its replacement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations which will end in 2030, target the eradication of poverty. The 2020 Covid pandemic has seriously worsened poverty incidence in many low income countries, and recovering lost ground is paramount. As low income economies try to establish a new normal, they need to aim not only for higher overall economic growth but also for a higher quality of economic growth for improved inclusion outcome. Higher quality means more inclusion per unit growth. We discuss how for the same …
