As the global economy has become interconnected, international trade has become a common medium for developing and developed countries to interact. However, there is a gap in the scholarly literature when considering the effects of export diversification. The goal of this dissertation is to study and identify the relationship between export concentration and economic development in developing countries. Data were collected from the International Monetary Fund World Bank for quantitative analysis. Using mediator analysis and these mediators included export volatility (export instability), net barter (terms of trade), and current account balance (competitiveness). This paper presents the hypothesis that tightening environmental regulation of a country would improve the effect of inward FDI on its environment. Estimations of a sample of 101 countries over the period 2006-2016 confirmed the hypothesis. The results also provide indirect evidence that countries with weak environmental regulations attract polluting FDI and might deter “clean” FDI.

AbstractOvercrowding in emergency departments (EDs) is a systemic issue, resulting in inefficiencies affecting patient care quality. Hospital leaders struggle with reducing bottlenecks in EDs and providing a better patient care experience. Grounded in the general systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies used to reduce inefficiencies in EDs. The participants included five directors, administrators, and clinical managers from a hospital ED in Idaho Falls, Idaho, who successfully used strategies to reduce inefficiencies in EDs. The impact of capital accumulation on job creation is an important and interesting issue in economic development. This model provides a general-equilibrium framework for studying technology choice with unemployment in a developing economy based on micro-foundations. Unemployment in the urban sector results from the existence of efficiency wages. Manufacturing firms engage in oligopolistic competition and choose technologies to maximise profits. A more advanced technology uses more capital and less labour. In the steady state, an increase in the amount of capital induces firms to choose more advanced technologies and the wage rate increases. The most recent addition to the workforce, the millennial generation cohort, presents a new set of challenges to leadership. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences related to the perception of commitment of millennial generation participants employed in the U.S. community banking sector. Researchers at South Dakota State University surveyed South Dakotan ranchers between January and March 2023 to better understand their beliefs and perspectives on various grazing techniques, which will allow programs to be tailored to better serve their needs in the future. A sample of 3,500 ranchers were purchased from DTN that contains 3,500 records from South Dakota with 50+ livestock and 100+ acres of pasture.

The Impact Of Unemployment And Female Labor Force Participation On Sex-Specific Suicide Rates Across U.S. States, 1979-2020, Jeffrey T. Lewis

Using pooled cross-sectional state-level data from 1979-2020 to analyze the effects of economic conditions and female labor force participation on sex-specific suicide rates, I arrive at four main conclusions. First, I find that, for both males and females, the positive association between unemployment and suicide is stronger for the working-age population (aged 25-64) than for the total population. Second, I find that the unemployment-suicide link is stronger for females than for males. I estimate that a one percentage-point increase in the unemployment rate is predicted to increase the suicide rate of working-age females by 1.6%, compared to 0.8% for working-age …

Existing literature shows that biases related to awareness can influence investors’ decisions when constructing portfolios or making financial decisions. In this paper, we examine whether student investors are drawn to stocks issued by companies with large general marketing budgets, based on the Ad Age 200, and stocks that are associated with popular brands. A field experiment was conducted in which undergraduate students constructed their own virtual stock portfolios. A treatment group of students was given a training seminar in stock market fundamentals in order to enhance their skillsets for stock market analysis and stock selection. The benefits of entrepreneurial mentorship are well documented, but there is limited research on how entrepreneurs connect with mentors, especially in digital settings. We partnered with an online platform that connects entrepreneurs to potential mentors to conduct a field experiment in online mentoring. Drawing on literature on entrepreneurial mentorship and Social Cognitive Theory, we compared the effects of three interventions on the likelihood of reaching out and making a connection with a mentor in a digital setting. Microfinance institutions offered a solution to borrowing to the ultra-poor through a group lending scheme where social capital drove repayment rates. In Bangladesh, the Grameen Bank was globally recognized as a successful microfinance institution, increasing financial literacy and mobility to the ultra-poor. Tangentially, the ready-made garment industry boomed in some districts with a Grameen Bank presence, while other districts were not impacted at all. The COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent shutdowns pushed many out of their jobs. In the US, there was a wide variety of economic and health system support provided by the states. Using data from Oxford University’s COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, this study attempts to find a relationship between the amount of financial support received by workers and current employment, hypothesizing that states that provided greater income and debt relief are now seeing less employment. Artificial borders created during Africa's colonial era have had a lasting impact on the continent, specifically in relation to culture and ethnicity. This study investigates the relationship between ethnic diversity and health outcomes and health care infrastructure in West Africa. I explore the effects of ethnic fractionalization on various health outcomes such as life expectancy and mortality rates, health-related infrastructure and staffing, and disease and immunization levels. This paper will also discuss colonialism and its institutional legacy. The discussion of the findings will include the impact of ethnic fractionalization, GNI per capita, and foreign aid on these outcomes.

This research examines the relationship between financial literacy and financial capability using cross-sectional data of the United States population from five different triennial surveys. Financial literacy is measured in terms of financial education attendance, and financial capability is measured in terms of how well people make ends meet in a typical month. Regression analysis was performed using probit models to determine the likelihood of financial difficulty in relation to financial education and other demographic characteristics. Administrative burdens are the psychological, compliance, and learning costs experienced by individuals interacting with public entities that may shape and reshape their relationship to citizenship and/or access to benefits and rights. It has long been hypothesized that third-party entities, designated as navigators, could be leveraged to mitigate the impact of administrative burden costs on citizens. For effective delivery of service, easing administrative burden costs in application processes may increase applicant likelihood of successfully navigating the bureaucratic process towards a desired end.

Data from Reporters Without Borders and the World Bank was used in this small case study to assess correlations between economic dispersion, freedom of the press, and measures of gender equality in eight countries. These countries were selected from two regions, with four from both Africa and the Balkans to total eight: Angola, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Romania, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Zimbabwe. Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as drought and heat waves. In this paper, we assess the impact of drought and high temperatures on the employment outcomes of working-age individuals in South Africa between 2008 and 2017. We merge high-resolution weather data with detailed individual-level survey data on labor market outcomes, and estimate causal impacts using a fixed effects framework. We find that increases in the occurrence of drought reduce overall employment. These effects are concentrated in the tertiary sector, amongst informal workers, and in provinces with a higher reliance on tourism. Taken together, our …

In this thesis I argue that improving diet in communities depends on building nutritional knowledge. In examining the role of community level organizations, I look specifically at how knowledge is conveyed through agriculture and gastronomy. This project analyzes how civil society organizations work to reintegrate individuals into food systems, compelling consumers to take agency over their diets and pursue better livelihoods. The industrialization of food systems has fundamentally changed the way humans connect with food and diet. Examining The Impact Of Living Arrangements On Children's Academic Achievement, Rachel G. Coan

In my paper I examine how different living arrangements impact how well a child performs in school. The living arrangements are: living with both biological parents, living with biological mother, and living with biological father. Using a linear regression method, I regress living arrangements against GPA and find that children who do not live with both of their biological parents are expected to perform about 0.3 GPA points worse in school than children who do. With added control variables the difference in predicted GPAs decreases. Additionally, I find that living arrangements aren’t predicted to impact children differently depending on their …
