The 1-2-3 Of Market Research For Business Startups: A Case Study In Library Instruction, Daniel Le, Marie-Louise Watson
The 1-2-3 Of Market Research For Business Startups: A Case Study In Library Instruction, Daniel Le, Marie-Louise Watson
Georgia Library Quarterly
This article describes a practical way to teach student entrepreneurs to search and use market data for business startup plans. The conventional way of teaching students to find articles and business intelligence based on a class assignment can be challenging for many students without an academic business background. This library instruction approach sequentially uses three databases enriched with business data and infographics to support the development of critical thinking for student entrepreneurs. It teaches entrepreneurial personality support, analysis, visualization, and market mapping.
The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Subjective Well-Being: A Case Study Of Oklahoma, Tyler Qualls
The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Subjective Well-Being: A Case Study Of Oklahoma, Tyler Qualls
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Using Oklahoma as a case study, this thesis applies a synthetic controls model to investigate the causal effect of right-to-work (RTW) laws on the well-being of the total population with a particular focus on the most affected subset, blue-collar workers and the less educated. The effect of RTW laws leads to a significant decrease in the happiness of blue-collar workers. To be specific, while results show a possible increase in unhappiness in the total population immediately following the adoption of the RTW law, for the more vulnerable blue-collar workers, the statistically significant negative effect of the law on happiness is …
An Empirical Study Of Rational Addiction: The Effects Of Quitting Aids On Smoking Cessation, Cade White
An Empirical Study Of Rational Addiction: The Effects Of Quitting Aids On Smoking Cessation, Cade White
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores the relationship between the use of quitting aids and smoking cessation using United States (US) survey data from the 2018-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS). Becker and Murphy’s (1988) theory of rational addiction implies that strong rational addictions must terminate abruptly. In other words, strong addictions only cease by the user quitting “cold turkey”. I empirically test this hypothesis using a “double-hurdle” approach, outlined by Jones (1994). A smoker’s decision to quit and their conditional quitting success is modeled in two stages. In the first stage, a probit model is estimated for their …

(Wp 2022-06) Sheila Dow's Open Systems Methodology, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This paper reviews Sheila Dow’s contributions to open systems thinking as a form of methodological argument and as an important foundation for pluralism in economics. It reviews the origins of her thinking in connection with her distinction between Cartesian/Euclidian and Babylonian thinking in the history of economics, discusses the further development of her views regarding open and closed systems in her 2002 Economic Methodology book and in connection with her ‘structured pluralism’ concept, discusses the 2005 paper co-authored with Victoria Chick, “The Meaning of Open Systems” examines Dow’s and Chick’s view and critique of critical realism in regard to the …
Social Security As Markov Equilibrium In Olg Models: Clarifications And New Insights, Armando R. Lopez-Velasco
Social Security As Markov Equilibrium In Olg Models: Clarifications And New Insights, Armando R. Lopez-Velasco
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
Forni (2005) is the first author to study the politico-economic sustainability of pay-as-you-go social security in the canonical 2-period OLG model that uses Cobb-Douglas production and logarithmic utility under Markovian voting strategies. This paper (1) shows that equilibria can only exist if the economy in absence of social security is dynamically inefficient, (2) derives the exact parametric conditions that lead to existence of equilibria, (3) shows that among all the admissible arbitrary constants that produce a Markov perfect equilibrium, the maximum constant in such set produces the only equilibrium that can solve dynamic inefficiency and produces a single steady state. …
The Mangrove Walks: An Econometric Analysis Of Climate Migration Drivers From Coastal Bangladesh And Their Geopolitical Impacts, Kendall Scott Byers
The Mangrove Walks: An Econometric Analysis Of Climate Migration Drivers From Coastal Bangladesh And Their Geopolitical Impacts, Kendall Scott Byers
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coastal Bangladesh is subject to extreme climate change forces upon poor, rural populations. The aim of this thesis is to determine the strength of environmental drivers of migration and discern whether planned or catastrophic migration predominates in the polder areas of Bangladesh. I use regression analysis on a 1,025 household, 2016 IRRI/IWMI analysis of Polder 28/1, 28/2, and 30 within Satkhira district to determine factor correlations with migration. Progressive salinization is the strongest environmental driver, while flooding decreases migration through trapping household capital investment. Religion has the greatest correlation with migration. Hindus migrate less frequently, but do so with more …
Three Essays On Consumption Smoothing, Logan James Miller
Three Essays On Consumption Smoothing, Logan James Miller
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Macroeconomic theory has established that consumption smoothing leads to higher standards of living. A stable consumption path can lead to more stability and less uncertainty between periods of high and low income. However, there is a wide body of literature that shows people do not consistently smooth their consumption when exposed to adverse income shocks. This dissertation uses experimental and empirical methods to better understand the obstacles people face when trying to smooth their consumption over time. It looks to understand the differences in pairs and individuals’ ability to smooth consumption. It also explores how the household’s level of income …
Does The Financial Experience Of Sec Regional Directors Impact Sec Investigations Into Reporting Entities?, James Justin Blann
Does The Financial Experience Of Sec Regional Directors Impact Sec Investigations Into Reporting Entities?, James Justin Blann
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The SEC’s Division of Enforcement is frequently criticized for its lack of oversight effectiveness, and certain vocal critics attribute this to a lack of financial experience within the SEC. Using hand-collected data on SEC regional directors, I find that the majority of these SEC officials lack financial experience. I then examine whether the financial experience of SEC regional directors impacts SEC investigations into reporting entities. Consistent with financial experience equipping directors to better process complex financial transactions and reports, I find that directors with financial experience open public company investigations 29 percent more often and conduct these investigations 34 percent …
Evaluating Impacts Of Development Programs On Female Education In Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Mobariz
Evaluating Impacts Of Development Programs On Female Education In Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Mobariz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates the effects of three development interventions on female education in Afghanistan: 1) effects of foreign military withdrawal on females’ demand for higher education; 2) impacts of PEZAK, a community-driven university entrance preparation, on student enrollment and performance in tertiary education; and 3) long-term effects of National Solidarity Program (NSP), that established gender-balanced local development councils, on female enrollment. Foreign military withdrawal increased female participation in higher education by 0.3 percentage points from a base value of 0.05 percent participation per capita. The PEZAK increased test scores by 0.17 standard deviations and had a positiveeffect on enrollment in …
What Is The Value Of Ethanol To Nebraska Corn Producers?, Austin Harthoorn
What Is The Value Of Ethanol To Nebraska Corn Producers?, Austin Harthoorn
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this thesis, we examine the role of local ethanol plants on net price received by Nebraskan corn growers, with net price comprised of the grain buyer’s bid onsite less the transportation cost incurred through delivery. As each farm operation is uniquely located between different sets of grain buyers, an ethanol plant impacts each grower’s net price to a different degree, depending on location. Exploring this, we use grain bid and transportation cost data based on actual ethanol plants, grain elevators, and sample farm locations in Nebraska, estimating the diversely located corn grower’s net prices received from surrounding grain buyers. …

Two’S A Crowd? Implications Of Economic Geography For Corporate Governance, Matthew Farrell
Two’S A Crowd? Implications Of Economic Geography For Corporate Governance, Matthew Farrell
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
Although literature on corporate governance and economic geography often explores similar constructs, theories, and other matters, little work has been done examining their joint effects. This two-essay dissertation integrates these literatures in order to partially fill this gap by asking the following research questions:
1.) Do geographic proximity and multiple directorships function as substitutes or complements?
2.) How is the governance of highly innovative firms affected by the presence of Marshallian externalities?
While some scholars suggest that multiple directorships lead to board members neglecting their advisory and monitoring obligations, others have embraced the idea that holding multiple board seats can …

Green roofs are being incorporated into stormwater management programs around the world. While numerous studies have estimated the private benefits to the owners and residents of buildings with green roofs, the value of the multiple public benefits received by non-building residents are less well known. We use a choice experiment survey to estimate the public benefits for a proposed green roof program in Portland, Oregon, USA. These benefits include reduced combined sewer overflows, reduced urban heat island effects, and an increase in pollinators such as birds, bees and butterflies. Past investments in stormwater infrastructure have exposed some residents to poor …
Shadow Rate Models And Monetary Policy, Ethan Struby, Michael F. Connolly
Shadow Rate Models And Monetary Policy, Ethan Struby, Michael F. Connolly
Department of Economics Working Paper Series
We examine the channels and efficacy of monetary policy at the zero lower bound (ZLB) through the lens of shadow rate models. We compare estimates across models with various factor structures and different assumptions about interest rate forecasts. We confirm that calendar-based forward guidance discretely shifted the implied duration of the ZLB and that large scale asset purchases (LSAPs) primarily lowered term premia. However, we find that the real effects of monetary policy are more muted relative to prior estimates: a 1 standard deviation fall in the shadow rate causes a peak decline in the unemployment rate of 0.003-0.01%.
The Political Economy Of Global Private Currencies, Girish Sreevatsan Nandakumar
The Political Economy Of Global Private Currencies, Girish Sreevatsan Nandakumar
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines regulatory responses to global private currencies (GPCs). Through detailed analyses of the history and evolution of private digital currencies, and through case studies of the United States, the European Union, and China, this dissertation identifies five factors that condition regulatory responses: (1) compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) laws, (2) compliance with systems built for fiat currencies, (3) degree of transparency in operations, (4) culture of sovereignty within the nation, and (5) great power competition with other nations. Throughout the dissertation, various political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental (PESTLE) characteristics of GPCs are highlighted. This dissertation also …
Dynamic Price Competition: Theory And Evidence From Airline Markets, Ali Hortaçsu, Aniko Öry, Kevin R. Williams
Dynamic Price Competition: Theory And Evidence From Airline Markets, Ali Hortaçsu, Aniko Öry, Kevin R. Williams
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We introduce a model of oligopoly dynamic pricing where firms with limited capacity face a sales deadline. We establish conditions under which the equilibrium is unique and converges to a system of differential equations. Using unique and comprehensive pricing and bookings data for competing U.S. airlines, we estimate our model and find that dynamic pricing results in higher output but lower welfare than under uniform pricing. Our theoretical and empirical findings run counter to standard results in single-firm settings due to the strategic role of competitor scarcity. Pricing heuristics commonly used by airlines increase welfare relative to estimated equilibrium predictions.
Markets With Within-Type Adverse Selection, Anh Nguyen, Teck Yong Tan
Markets With Within-Type Adverse Selection, Anh Nguyen, Teck Yong Tan
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
We study bilateral trade with a seller owning multiple units of a good, where each unit is of binary quality. The seller privately knows her “type”—defined by the number of lemons that she owns — and which units in her endowments are the lemons (“withintype adverse selection”). We characterize the set of informationally constrained Pareto optimal allocations and show that every such allocation must involve a trade characterized by a threshold λ∗, with types having less (more) than λ∗ units of lemons selling only their lemons (selling their entire endowment). We provide conditions for a …

The Imaginary And Epistemology Of Disaster Preparedness: The Case Of Japan's Nuclear Safety Failure, Hiro Saito
The Imaginary And Epistemology Of Disaster Preparedness: The Case Of Japan's Nuclear Safety Failure, Hiro Saito
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Fukushima nuclear disaster was profoundly a man-made one, resulting from the organiza-tional failure of nuclear emergency preparedness. To fully understand the cause of this disaster, I propose to extend an organizational perspective on disasters into a macro-institutional perspec-tive on disaster preparedness. To this end, I borrow from science and technology studies the concepts of "sociotechnical imaginary" and "civic epistemology" to probe the deepest layers of meaning-making constitutive of disaster preparedness. I then apply these concepts to the history of nuclear energy in postwar Japan that was centered on the developmental state pursuing in-dustrial transformation. Specifically, I illustrate how the …
Political Differences In Air Pollution Abatement Under The Clean Air Act, Andrew G. Meyer, Zach Raff, Jason M. Walter
Political Differences In Air Pollution Abatement Under The Clean Air Act, Andrew G. Meyer, Zach Raff, Jason M. Walter
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we study how local politics affect state level implementation of a critical federal environmental policy, the Clean Air Act, in the electricity generation sector. The analysis focuses on the installation of capital intensive air pollution abatement technology in highly regulated “nonattainment” areas, which violate federal air quality standards. The primary research design uses a regression discontinuity in the vote share for Republican governors and event study analyses of close elections. In nonattainment areas, Republican gubernatorial control differentially decreases new air pollution abatement capital spending by 90% and the probability of installing the most effective nitrogen oxide abatement …
Moderate, Overlooked Weather Events And Local Labor Markets, Michael Ellis
Moderate, Overlooked Weather Events And Local Labor Markets, Michael Ellis
All Theses
A substantial amount of research exists on the economic effects of natural disasters and extreme weather, as well as comparatively minor variations in daily weather conditions such as precipitation, temperature, and wind. I construct a sample of over a million storms that range from intense daily weather conditions to extreme weather. I analyze written descriptions of the damages caused by many of these storms to identify 93,743 weather events within the sample that appear to be underemphasized in the existing economic literature. These storms cause more damage and disruptions to commerce than 63.5% of storms in the sample, yet do …
The Effect Of The Affordable Care Act On Opioid Overdose Mortality, Caleb Jordan
The Effect Of The Affordable Care Act On Opioid Overdose Mortality, Caleb Jordan
All Theses
The opioid epidemic is an ongoing health crisis in the United States, claiming the lives of thousands over the past two decades. In 2014, provisions of the Affordable Care Act expanding Medicaid officially came in effect, extending healthcare to millions of people in the United States. However, Medicaid expansion was optional for states, so some states greatly expanded healthcare to low-income people while others did not. People in expansion states gained more affordable access to prescription drugs and treatment centers, making opioids easier to obtain and addictions more affordable to treat. This makes the effect of the Affordable Care Act …
Three Chapters On Investments And Financial Institutions, Cao Fang
Three Chapters On Investments And Financial Institutions, Cao Fang
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Only the stock selection (“alpha”) decisions of fund managers who trade on firm-specific information should have predictive return content. Faced with the same information, skilled fund managers make similar stock selection decisions. In Chapter one, we introduce a new measure - stock investment quality - which uses fund quality to weight asymmetries in private information reflected in deviations of fund from peer group ownership on stocks in a style segment. We show stocks ranked high on investment quality generate significantly higher excess returns that persist through the ensuing year. The positive investment quality–future return relationship is robust to alternative fund …
Discrete Choice Experiments In Agricultural And Food Economics: Two Essays On Information Provision Modalities, Uncertainty Adjustment, And Hypothetical Bias, Monsoïa Arsène Juste Agossadou
Discrete Choice Experiments In Agricultural And Food Economics: Two Essays On Information Provision Modalities, Uncertainty Adjustment, And Hypothetical Bias, Monsoïa Arsène Juste Agossadou
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stated discrete choice experiments are extensively used in applied economics to study preferences and valuation for new products, as well as costs and benefits of new policies and programs. Moreover, information provision experiments widely use the method to examine information effects on different outcomes. This thesis explores two methodological issues in discrete choice experiments: (i) information provision modalities and (ii) hypothetical bias. The first study examines the effect of information modality by testing the effect of using combined text script and audio clip (treatment) versus only text script (control) to convey information in discrete choice experiments. Specifically, the study elicits …
The Effects Of Consumer Loan Application Formats And Advertised Terms On Consumer Borrowing Decisions, Alicia M. Johnson
The Effects Of Consumer Loan Application Formats And Advertised Terms On Consumer Borrowing Decisions, Alicia M. Johnson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consumers continue to demonstrate a willingness to accrue more debt. They are also more accepting of increased repayment risk via the acceptance of longer loan terms. Extant research on consumer borrowing consists primarily of experiments designed to assess consumer choices and understand how consumers evaluate loan attributes in relation to one another within consumer borrowing contexts (Kamleitner, Hoelzl, and Kirchler 2012; Ranyard et al., 2006). Thus, prior research examines consumer responses to loan information rather than the generation of loan parameters at the time of financing. With important implications for consumers, marketers of financial products, academic researchers, and federal regulators, …
A Quality Systems Economic-Risk Design Theoretical Framework, Abdallah S. Thefeid
A Quality Systems Economic-Risk Design Theoretical Framework, Abdallah S. Thefeid
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Quality systems, including control charts theory and sampling plans, have become essential tools to develop business processes. Since 1928, research has been conducted in developing the economic-risk designs for specific types of control charts or sampling plans. However, there has been no theoretical or applied research attempts to combine these related theories into a synthesized theoretical framework of quality systems economic-risk design. This research proposes to develop a theoretical framework of quality systems economic-risk design from qualitative research synthesis of the economic-risk design of sampling plan models and control charts models. This theoretical framework will be useful in guiding future …

Efficient Bilateral Trade Via Two-Stage Mechanisms: Comparison Between One-Sided And Two-Sided Asymmetric Information Environments, Takashi Kunimoto, Cuiling Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper first considers a bilateral-trade model with one-sided asymmetric information in which one agent (seller) initially owns an indivisible object and is fully informed of its value, while the other agent (buyer) intends to obtain the object whose value is unknown to himself. As no mechanisms can generally result in efficient, voluntary bilateral trades (Jehiel and Pauzner, 2006), we aim to overturn this impossibility result by employing two-stage mechanisms (Mezzetti, 2004) in which first, the outcome (e.g., allocation of the goods) is determined, then the agents observe their own outcome-decision payoffs, and finally, transfers are made. We show that …
Vertical Integration And Competitive Balance In Professional Sports: Evidence From Minor League Baseball, Qi Ge, Brad R. Humphreys, Alexander Eisert
Vertical Integration And Competitive Balance In Professional Sports: Evidence From Minor League Baseball, Qi Ge, Brad R. Humphreys, Alexander Eisert
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Major League Baseball (MLB) teams regularly call up players from their Minor League Baseball (MiLB) affliates to fulfill roster needs. This paper utilizes a manually collected panel of player call-ups between 1946 and 2019 and studies their impact on competitive balance in the minor leagues. Our results indicate an overall positive relationship between call-ups and competitive balance in the MiLB, with the pro-competitive effect primarily driven by the AA leagues and not AAA leagues. We also find suggestive evidence of the effect being likely explained by the promotion of MiLB players to MLB, rather than the demotion of MLB players …

This study attempts to investigate how economic growth (EG), energy consumption (EC), and population (POP) hurt the environmental quality of five regions: South Asia, East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, as well as the Middle East and North Africa. The Wald and NARDL bounds tests check asymmetry and cointegration among the variables, respectively. The study has used the panel non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (PNARDL) model to analyze the non-linear panel cointegration and the panel short and longrun associations among the variables. In the long-run, EG with a negative shock has a positive and significant impact on CO2 …

President Musharraf assumed power in October 1999 under difficult circumstances when Pakistan was already facing sanctions for nuclear testing, further compounded by sanctions against the military takeover. External liquidity had dried up due to the freezing of foreign currency deposits in May 1998. The new government assigned priority to debt restructuring and reforms in taxation, trade, the financial sector, privatization of state-owned enterprises, and deregulation of private businesses. This article provides a first-hand, data-driven account of Pakistan's economic record during 2000-2008, demonstrating that sustained economic growth was possible because a strong government mobilized domestic resources and ensured they were utilized …
