งานศึกษานี้ต้องการศึกษาอิทธิพลของทักษะทางการเงินต่อการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงินในประเทศไทย โดยใช้ข้อมูลการสำรวจระดับความรู้ทางการเงินและการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงินของประชาชนปี พ.ศ. 2561 จำนวน 11,129 ตัวอย่าง สร้างเป็นตัวแปรทักษะทางการเงิน และการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงินซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นตัวแปรเชิงปริมาณ ตามลำดับ และวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ด้วยแบบจำลองการถดถอยแบบสองชั้น (2-Stage Least Squares : 2-SLS) โดยใช้ระดับทักษะทางการเงินเฉลี่ยของจังหวัดที่กลุ่มตัวอย่างอาศัยอยู่ และทักษะทางคณิตศาสตร์ของกลุ่มตัวอย่าง เป็นตัวแปรเครื่องมือ (Instrumental Variable : IV) เพื่อแก้ปัญหาตัวแปรภายใน (Endogeneity) ที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างตัวแปรการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงินและตัวแปรทักษะทางการเงิน ผลการศึกษาพบว่าระดับทักษะทางการเงินไม่เพียงแต่จะมีความสัมพันธ์กับระดับการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงินในภาพรวมเท่านั้น แต่ยังมีส่วนช่วยเพิ่มโอกาสการเข้าถึงผลิตภัณฑ์ทางการเงินกลุ่มต่างๆ อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ นอกจากนี้การทดสอบยืนยันผลการศึกษาด้วยการแบ่งกลุ่มลักษณะประชากรตามลักษณะรายได้ และลักษณะการกระจายตัวของระดับการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงิน ยังคงแสดงให้เห็นว่าทักษะทางการเงินมีอิทธิพลต่อการเข้าถึงบริการทางการเงินในประเทศไทย

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพฤติกรรมการแข่งขันของอุตสาหกรรมโรงชำแหละสุกรในประเทศไทยที่จดทะเบียนและมีใบอนุญาต โดยการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ประกอบการจำนวน 5 รายเพื่อศึกษาพฤติกรรมการแข่งขันทั้งทางด้านราคาและไม่ใช่ราคาโดยอาศัยการวิเคราะห์ภาพรวมอุตสาหกรรมด้วยเครื่องมือห่วงโซ่คุณค่า (Value Chain) และวิเคราะห์ตัวแทนอุตสาหกรรมด้วยเครื่องมือแบบจำลองแรงผลักดัน 5 ประการ (Five Force Model) และคำนวณส่วนเหลื่อมตลาด ผลการศึกษาพบว่าโครงสร้างตลาดของอุตสาหกรรมโรงชำแหละสุกรของประเทศไทยมีลักษณะผู้ขายน้อยราย ซึ่งจากการคำนวณ CR4 เป็นในทิศทางเดียวกันกับผลสรุป HHI และ CCI นั่นคืออุตสาหกรรมโรงชำแหละสุกรของประเทศไทยมีอัตราการกระจุกตัวสูงหรือมีการแข่งขันน้อย อีกทั้งผู้ประกอบการมีพฤติกรรมการแข่งขันในด้านไม่ใช่ราคามากกว่าด้านราคาเป็นกลยุทธ์หลัก โดยใช้การสร้างความแตกต่างในตัวผลิตภัณฑ์คือการชำแหละเนื้อสุกรให้มีคุณภาพและโรงชำแหละสุกรที่ให้บริการแบบครบวงจรจะสามารถควบคุมค่าใช้จ่ายด้านต้นทุนได้ดีกว่าโรงชำแหละสุกรประเภทอื่น ๆ

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นการศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผลิตภาพแรงงานและค่าจ้างระหว่างภาคของประเทศไทย การศึกษาส่วนใหญ่วิเคราะห์เพียงรายประเทศและรายสาขาการผลิตเท่านั้น ประเทศไทยยังขาดการศึกษาในรายภูมิภาค ซึ่งตารางปัจจัยการผลิตและผลผลิตระหว่างภาค (Multi-Regional Input-Output Table : MRIO) สามารถให้รายละเอียดข้อมูลได้ทั้งรายภูมิภาคและรายสาขาการผลิต แต่เนื่องจากตารางดังกล่าวยังขาดข้อมูลในด้าน “จำนวนแรงงาน” การศึกษาครั้งนี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อจำแนกข้อมูลผลผลิต จำนวนแรงงาน และค่าจ้าง รายภูมิภาคและรายสาขาการผลิต โดยใช้นิยามจากตารางปัจจัยการผลิตและผลผลิตระหว่างภาค และแบ่งแรงงานเป็นประเภทมีฝีมือและไร้ฝีมือ สัดส่วนทุนต่อแรงงาน ผลิตภาพแรงงาน และค่าจ้าง 2) เพื่อวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผลิตภาพแรงงานและค่าจ้าง รายภูมิภาคและรายสาขาการผลิต 3) เพื่อวิเคราะห์ผลกระทบต่อการจ้างงานรายภูมิภาคและรายสาขาการผลิต หากอุปสงค์ขั้นสุดท้าย (Final Demand) ของประเทศเปลี่ยนแปลงไป ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ภาคตะวันออก โดยเฉพาะสาขาอุตสาหกรรมมีความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผลิตภาพแรงงานและค่าจ้างสูง ส่วนใหญ่จะมีลักษณะของแรงงานประเภทมีฝีมือสอดรับกับสัดส่วนทุนต่อแรงงาน และเมื่อพิจารณาการเปลี่ยนแปลงอุปสงค์ขั้นสุดท้าย หากอุปสงค์ขั้นสุดท้ายเปลี่ยนแปลงไป จะส่งผลกระทบต่อการจ้างงานสูงใน ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ โดยเฉพาะสาขาการปศุสัตว์เมื่อวิเคราะห์ความเชื่อมโยงไปข้างหลัง (Backward Linkage) และสาขาการทำไร่มันสำปะหลังเมื่อวิเคราะห์ความเชื่อมโยงไปข้างหน้า (Forward Linkage)

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์การวิจัยคือ เพื่อศึกษาถึงรูปแบบของครัวเรือนและการจัดสรรทรัพยากรของครัวเรือนชายรักชายในกรุงเทพมหานคร เพื่อศึกษาถึงการเปรียบเทียบรูปแบบของครัวเรือนรักต่างเพศในประเทศไทยและครัวเรือนชายรักชายในประเทศตะวันตก และเพื่อศึกษาผลกระทบของรูปแบบของครัวเรือนชายรักชายที่มีต่ออุปทานแรงงานของครัวเรือนชายรักชายในกรุงเทพมหานคร ด้วยวิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยการวิจัยเชิงเอกสารสำหรับครัวเรือนรักต่างเพศในประเทศไทย และครัวเรือนชายรักชายในประเทศตะวันตก รวมถึงการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกสำหรับครัวเรือนชายรักชายในกรุงเทพมหานคร ทั้งนี้มีการเลือกตัวอย่างด้วยการใช้วิธีแบบเจาะจงและสโนว์บอลจำนวน 26 ครัวเรือน จากผลการวิจัยพบว่า ครัวเรือนชายรักชายในกรุงเทพมหานครมีรูปแบบของครัวเรือนทั้งหมด 5 รูปแบบคือ แบบจำลองอำนาจการต่อรองภายในครัวเรือนแบบให้ความร่วมมือกัน แบบจำลองอำนาจการต่อรองภายในครัวเรือนแบบไม่ให้ความร่วมมือกัน รูปแบบของครัวเรือนเสมือนแบบจำลองครัวเรือนแบบเดี่ยว รูปแบบของครัวเรือนเสมือนแบบจำลองอำนาจการต่อรองภายในครัวเรือนแบบให้ความร่วมมือกัน และรูปแบบของครัวเรือนเสมือนแบบจำลองอำนาจการต่อรองภายในครัวเรือนแบบไม่ให้ความร่วมมือกัน แต่ขณะเดียวกันครัวเรือนชายรักชายในประเทศตะวันตกกลับมีรูปแบบของครัวเรือนเสมือนแบบจำลองอำนาจการต่อรองภายในครัวเรือนแบบไม่ให้ความร่วมมือกัน ส่วนครัวเรือนรักต่างเพศในประเทศไทยมีรูปแบบของครัวเรือน ได้แก่ แบบจำลองครัวเรือนแบบเดี่ยว และรูปแบบของครัวเรือนเสมือนแบบจำลองครัวเรือนแบบเดี่ยว ซึ่งจะเห็นได้ว่ารูปแบบครัวเรือนชายรักชายในประเทศตะวันตกและรูปแบบครัวเรือนรักต่างเพศในประเทศไทยไม่อาจเป็นตัวแทนลักษณะครัวเรือนชายรักชายในกรุงเทพมหานครได้ทั้งหมด นอกจากนี้ผลกระทบของรูปแบบของครัวเรือนชายรักชายที่มีต่ออุปทานแรงงานของครัวเรือนชายรักชายในกรุงเทพมหานครสามารถแสดงให้เห็นได้จากการเปลี่ยนอุปทานแรงงานของครัวเรือนผ่านพลวัตการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปช่วงก่อนและหลังการมีครัวเรือน พลวัตการเปลี่ยนแปลงระหว่างช่วงครัวเรือนที่เพิ่งอยู่ร่วมกันกับครัวเรือนที่อยู่ร่วมกันกับครัวเรือนที่อยู่ร่วมกันในระยะยาว การตัดสินใจประกอบอาชีพของสมาชิกในครัวเรือน และการเลือกปฏิบัติทางเพศของแรงงานครัวเรือนชายรักชาย ทั้งนี้งานวิจัยยังสะท้อนได้อีกว่า แบบจำลองครัวเรือนที่นักเศรษฐศาสตร์ครัวเรือนคิดค้นไม่อาจนำมาใช้ได้กับทุกประเภทของครัวเรือน และทุกสถานที่ตั้งของครัวเรือน

The research analyzed the influence of different household characteristics on household debt, including mortgage debt. Using data from Thailand’s Household Socio-Economic Survey in 2019 and 2021, the study implemented a logit model to identify household characteristics with significant impact on household debt. By analyzing data from two different periods that varied in social and economic contexts, the study highlighted critical factors that influenced household debt demand. In sharp contrast to most previous crisis episodes, the Treasury market experienced severe stress and illiquidity during the COVID-19 crisis, raising concerns that the safe-haven status of US Treasuries may be eroding. We document large shifts in Treasury ownership and temporary accumulation of Treasury and reverse repo positions on dealer balance sheets during this period. We build a dynamic equilibrium asset pricing model in which dealers subject to regulatory balance sheet constraints intermediate demand/supply shocks from habitat agents and provide repo financing to levered investors. For subsistence communities, the question is whether aspirations can be applied to motivate behavior that is, on the one hand consistent with people’s aspirations, but which might otherwise be difficult to elicit. Could poorer households be encouraged to save, to spend more on their children’s education, or to act against unhealthy social norms? A couple of examples suggest this is not only possible, but highly successful in contexts where other appeals fail.

Although various typologies of goods are commonly adopted in economics, one stood out in market experiment results contrasting market stability and efficiency with market instability: non-durable, or perishable, goods (Smith, 1962) versus durable re-tradable assets (Smith et al., 1988; Dickhaut et al., 2012; S. D. Gjerstad et al., 2015). This dichotomy of goods also proved central for understanding macroeconomic instability more broadly: about 75% of consumer spending is bought for final consumption, and is a rock of stability; instability arises from the other 25% re-tradable goods, most prominently, houses (S. In March, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had fallen to 6,594.44, a total decline of 53.4 percent from its peak in the fall of 2007. The official unemployment rate was over 9 percent and still trending upward, eventually exceeding 10 percent. This paper evaluates the effect of U.S. state corporate income taxes on union wage premiums. American workers who belong to unions are paid more than their non-union counterparts, and this difference is greater in low-tax locations, possibly reflecting that unions and employers share tax savings associated with low tax rates. In 2000 the difference between average union and non-union hourly wages was $1.88 greater in states with corporate tax rates below four percent than in states with tax rates of nine percent and above. Artificial intelligence (“AI”)-enabled products are expected to drive economic growth. Training data are important for firms developing AI-enabled products; without training data, firms cannot develop or refine their algorithms. This is particularly the case for AI startups developing new algorithms and products. However, there is no consensus in the literature on which aspects of training data are most important. Using unique survey data of AI startups, we find that startups with access to proprietary training data are more likely to acquire venture capital funding.

My dissertation studies the measurement of investor disagreement and the effects of investor disagreement on asset prices. In my first essay, I clarify the seemingly contradicting theoretical predictions of Miller (1977), and Varian (1985, 1989) and Abel (1989), and design empirical analysis to test the predictions in a unified framework. Miller models the effect of the level of disagreement on asset prices and predicts a negative relation between investor disagreement and subsequent asset returns. My dissertation studies the evolution and role of short selling activity in financial markets. My first essay examines the cross-sectional and time-series variations in the characteristics of equity lending market in the setting of IPO, where, as suggested by Duffie et al. (2002), search frictions are likely to be high. I find that the initial supply of lendable shares and short interest levels increase with offer size, while initial lending fees decrease with offer size. Signals From On High And The Power Of Growth Mindset: A Natural Field Experiment In Attracting Minorities To High-Profile Position, Jeffrey A. Flory, Andreas Leibbrandt, Christina Rott, Olga B. Stoddard

We conduct a large-scale natural field experiment with a Fortune 500 company to test several approaches to attract minorities to high-profile positions. 5,000 prospective applicants were randomized into treatments varying a portion of recruiting materials. We find that self-selection at two early-career stages exhibits a substantial race gap. Importantly, we show that this gap can be strongly influenced by several treatments, with some increasing application rates by minorities by 40 percent and others being particularly effective for minority women. The heterogeneities we find by gender, race, and career stage shed light on the underlying drivers of self-selection barriers among minorities.

In 2017, Congress created the Opportunity Zone (“OZ”) program to stimulate economic growth in low-income communities. The program was characterized by its unprecedented scale relative to previous place-based development efforts and was described as “perhaps the most ambitious economic development tool to come out of Congress in a generation.” However, the program was quickly criticized on numerous grounds, and its design flaws are so severe that several legislators have called for its reform or repeal.

Mass rapid transit (MRT) PPPs have proliferated in the past two decades. This chapter provides a framework to categorise and understand alternative PPP designs. As MRT systems are inherently large, unprofitable and risky projects, PPP design is critical to project success and sustainability. We study the experiences of MRT PPPs in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing to understand factors underlying success and failure and to arrive at policy recommendations for PPPs. Policymakers need to have additional governance improvement and risk mitigation measures in place when tied supply chains are utilised. We study the design of mechanisms involving agents that have limited strategic sophistication. We define a mechanism to be simple if—given the assumed level of strategic sophistication—agents can determine their optimal strategy. We examine whether it is optimal for the mechanism designer who faces strategically unsophisticated agents to offer a simple mechanism. We show that when the designer uses a mechanism that is not simple, while she loses the ability to predict play, she may nevertheless be better off no matter how agents resolve their strategic confusion

Uniform Nonparametric Inference For Spatially Dependent Panel Data: The Xtnpsreg Command, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Wenyu Zhou

In this article, we introduce a command, xtnpsreg, that implements a uniform nonparametric inference procedure for possibly unbalanced panel datasets with general forms of spatio-temporal dependence. We demonstrate how to apply this command in several use cases, including (i) the nonparametric estimation of conditional mean function and its marginal response; (ii) the construction of uniform confidence bands for these nonparametric functional parameters; (iii) specification tests for parametric model restrictions; and (iv) the estimation and uniform inference for functional coefficients in semi-nonparametric models.

Learning Before Testing: A Selective Nonparametric Test For Conditional Moment Restrictions, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Wenyu Zhou

This paper develops a new test for conditional moment restrictions via nonparametric series regression, with approximating series terms selected by Lasso. Machine-learning the main features of the unknown conditional expectation function beforehand enables the test to seek power in a targeted fashion. The data-driven selection, however, also tends to distort the test’s size nontrivially, because it restricts the (growing-dimensional) score vector in the series regression on a random polytope, and hence, effectively alters the score’s asymptotic normality. In most democracies, members of parliament (MPs) are elected either through a party list or by a district. We use a discontinuity in the German electoral system to investigate the causal effect of a district election on an MP’s conformity with the party line. A district election does not affect roll-call voting behavior causally, possibly due to overall high adherence to party-line voting. Analyzing the parliamentary speeches of each MP allows us to overcome the high party-line discipline with regard to parliamentary voting. The ASEAN region is one of the most susceptible regions to climate change, with three of its countries—Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand—among those that have suffered the greatest fatalities and economic losses because of climate-related disasters. This paper reveals that the ASEAN’s environmental performance is sorely lagging other regions despite evidence of its cohesive and comprehensive efforts to mitigate emissions and build up adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters. Within the ASEAN, there exist gaps in environmental performance between each country.
