By utilizing Heckman’s two-stage selection model, this paper attempts to establish correlates between an individual’s physical attractiveness and the employer’s hiring decisions and wage allocations in an experimental labor market. Undergraduate students from De La Salle University Manila represented the sample for applicants. The findings show that, first, beauty premium is lower for men—more physically attractive male candidates have lower chances of getting hired, and subsequently acquire lower wages than more physically attractive women. Second, beauty premium does not differ between the sales and finance occupations. Third, the relationship between beauty and hiring probability comes from the employer’s personal bias, …

An Evaluation Of A New Investors-Based System Information Application In The Indonesian Stock Exchange, Berto Usman, Willy Abdillah, Ruth Yendra Indriyatmi
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study investigates the implementation of AKSes Application at the Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI), adopting the Information System Success Model developed by DeLone and McLean, (2003). This model employs system quality (SYSQUAL), information quality (IQ), services quality (SERVQ), system use (SU), and user satisfaction (US) so as to evaluate the effectiveness and successful model of AKSes application. In particular, we empirically tested the relationship among the employed dimensions, in which we investigated the variance in SU and US as the dependent variables. Using a quantitative study with survey design, we used primary data that was collected by circulating questionnaires …

Examining Chronic And Transient Poverty Using The Community-Based Monitoring System (Cbms) Data: The Case Of The Municipality Of Orion, Alellie Borel Sobreviñas
DLSU Business & Economics Review
With poverty reduction as the government’s primary goal, monitoring the poverty situation of households or individuals is deemed necessary. In the Philippines, several local government units (LGUs) have adopted the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) as a local poverty monitoring tool. This study used the constructed CBMS panel data for the municipality of Orion in Bataan province covering the period 2006, 2009, and 2012 to identify chronic and transient poor households based on the duration of poverty. A comparison between chronic and transient poor households revealed differences in their characteristics. For instance, chronic poor were generally found to have bigger household …
The Philippine Ukay-Ukay Culture As Sustainable Fashion, Hazel T. Biana
The Philippine Ukay-Ukay Culture As Sustainable Fashion, Hazel T. Biana
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Wang et al. (2019) proposed a sustainable fashion index model that aims to measure the sustainability of fashion companies. The model is interesting because of its underlying theory, which provides necessary dimensions and variables that make the fashion industry and its activities sustainable. This paper aims to employ these dimensions and variables as theoretical concepts to evaluate the sustainability of Philippine ukay-ukay culture. Ukay-ukay is a term used both for the act of shopping by digging up piles of used or pre-loved clothes until one makes a good find. It also refers to retailers of secondhand clothes and accessories in …

Government Size Dan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Di Indonesia, Ary Ratna Santika, Riatu M. Qibthiyyah
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
The aim of this research to investigate the effect of government size on regional economic growth in Indonesia. This study uses panel data analysis with using two years of interval data from 2009 until 2015. The results showed that government size has a significant effect on economic growth and it has a non-linear relationship. According the estimation from the model, the threshold government size on regional economic growth is 38.98 percent. Above the threshold, an increase in government size will instead have a negative effect on economic growth.
Urban-Rural Gaps In The Prevalence Of Hypertension, Obesity And Diabetes In Malaysia, Thangiah Govindamal
Urban-Rural Gaps In The Prevalence Of Hypertension, Obesity And Diabetes In Malaysia, Thangiah Govindamal
Student Works (2020-2029)
Rapid economic growth has driven urbanization in developed and developing economies. However, it also created several problems, such as a deterioration in health conditions worldwide and widening of urban-rural and income inequality. A major consequence of urbanization include the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors, such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes. The rapid nutrient and physical activity transition due to urbanization and the peculiar form of economic transformation has impacted the CVD risk factors. Rising urban-rural differences in health profiles and CVD risk factors in both locations over years in Malaysia prompted this research …
Competitive Blind Spots And The Cyclicality Of Investment: Experimental Evidence, Cortney S. Rodent, Andrew Smyth
Competitive Blind Spots And The Cyclicality Of Investment: Experimental Evidence, Cortney S. Rodent, Andrew Smyth
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
We report laboratory experiments investigating the cyclicality of profit‐enhancing investment in a competitive environment. In our setting, optimal investment is counter‐cyclical when investment costs fall following market downturns. However, we do not observe counter‐cyclical investment. Instead, we see much less strategic behavior than our rational investment model anticipates. Our participants exhibit what Porter (1980) terms a competitive blind spot, and heuristic investment models where individuals invest a fixed percentage of their liquidity, or a fixed percentage of anticipated market demand, better fit our data than does optimal investment. We also report a control treatment without cost changes and a treatment …
Faith-Based Paths To Business Success: Malaysian Manifestations Of The Evangelical-Neoliberal Nexus, Králik Martin
Faith-Based Paths To Business Success: Malaysian Manifestations Of The Evangelical-Neoliberal Nexus, Králik Martin
Student Works (2020-2029)
The thesis profiles a number of evangelical Christian groups which operate in Malaysia’s Klang Valley. Some of them have embraced business, financing, investment and real estate undertakings on a significant scale. The objective was to cast new light on how the confluence of evangelical and neoliberal capitalist forces (occurring first in the United States and now transnationally) influenced and at times directly shaped their setting up, development and growth, as well as broader socioeconomic and political positions. In particular, the aim was to map out and analyse the founders’ and members’ choice of religious affiliation; their personal motivations and the …

The purpose of this study is to unveil the additional benefits that tourism brings to the state beyond the direct spending of the visitor. To achieve this purpose, we draw on two separate survey efforts. The first, and primary, effort is an online survey of business owners and managers in Montana. The second survey is a random intercept of Montanans asking some similar questions regarding their perceived importance ratings of a variety of factors related to living in Montana and, if they own a business, to their decision to operate in the state. Quality of life, and in particular outdoor …

This paper examines the impact of institutional quality (government effectiveness index, voice and accountability index, and political stability) and economic variables (Gross Domestic Product [GDP], inflation, trade openness, and gross fixed capital formation) on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in ASEAN 2012–2016 by using panel data analysis. The obtained results indicate that economics variables have a greater impact on FDI than political stability indicator. Our findings also suggest that insignificant effect of democracy and institutional quality indicator on FDI caused by the high level of corruption in ASEAN which maybe has a crowding out effect to level of democracy and …
Individuals Responses To Economic Cycles: Organizational Relevance And A Multilevel Theoretical Integration, Nina Sirola
Individuals Responses To Economic Cycles: Organizational Relevance And A Multilevel Theoretical Integration, Nina Sirola
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The state of the economy represents a concern for individuals and shapes their behavior in profound ways. The current review of studies on how individuals respond to economic cycles reveals that organizational relevance of such responses has often not been considered, and the literature is characterized by a variety of seemingly disconnected explanations for how and why individuals respond to the perceived state of the economy. I develop a theoretical framework that systematizes the literature and accounts for the seemingly disparate findings, highlighting the underlying functionality of such responses for individuals. I then integrate the literature on individual responses to …
Public Leaderboard Feedback In Sampling Competition: An Experimental Investigation, Stanton Hudja, Brian Roberson, Yaroslav Rosokha
Public Leaderboard Feedback In Sampling Competition: An Experimental Investigation, Stanton Hudja, Brian Roberson, Yaroslav Rosokha
ESI Working Papers
We investigate the role of performance feedback, in the form of a public leaderboard, in a sequential-sampling contest with costly observations. The player whose sequential random sample contains the observation with the highest value wins the contest and obtains a prize with a fixed value. We find that there exist parameter configurations such that in the subgame perfect equilibrium of contests with a fixed ending date (i.e., finite horizon), providing public performance feedback results in fewer expected observations and a lower expected value of the winning observation. We conduct a controlled laboratory experiment to test the theoretical predictions, and find …

Forecasting Skills In Experimental Markets: Illusion Or Reality?, Brice Corgnet, Cary Deck, Mark Desantis, David Porter
ESI Working Papers
Using experimental asset markets, we study the situation of a financial analyst who is trying to infer the fundamental value of an asset by observing the market’s history. We find that such capacity requires both standard cognitive skills (IQ) as well as social and emotional skills. However, forecasters with high emotional skills tend to perform worse when market mispricing is high as they tend to give too much emphasis to the noisy signals from market data. By contrast, forecasters with high social skills perform especially well in markets with high levels of mispricing in which their skills could help them …

Trust, Reciprocity, And Social History: New Pathways Of Learning When Max U (Own Reward) Fails Decisively, Vernon L. Smith
ESI Working Papers
"This evaluation begins with the BDM protocol—itself a methodological contribution—and the experimental findings. The question of the replicability and robustness of these unexpected results is addressed next in a summary of two subsequent experimental papers. We follow with a discussion of two attempts to explain qua understand the BDM findings; both, however, have methological deficiencies—Reciprocity and Social Preference explanations. Finally, we offer a brief on Adam Smith’s (1759; 1853; hereafter in the text, Sentiments) model of human sociability, based on strictly self-interested actors, that culminates in propositions that (1) account for trust game choices, and (2) predict action in new …

The Promises And Perils Of Insurtech, Lin Lin, Christopher C. H. Chen
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The insurance sector, in riding the wave of the FinTech phenomenon, has been rapidly expanding, with a slew of firms having emerged to provide so-called “InsurTech” services. These services incorporate concepts such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, digitalisation and the sharing economy to various aspects of the insurance industry. This profusion of technology brings with it the promise of various benefits including increasing efficiency and lowering costs for not only insurers and intermediaries, but also businesses or consumers as end-users of insurance. However, the development of InsurTech comes with corresponding risks and regulatory concerns not currently accounted for by the traditional …
Job Duration And Match Characteristics Over The Business Cycle, Ismail Baydur, Toshihiko Mukoyama
Job Duration And Match Characteristics Over The Business Cycle, Ismail Baydur, Toshihiko Mukoyama
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper studies the cyclical behavior of job separation and the characteristics of matches between workers and jobs. We estimate a proportional hazard model with competing risks, distinguishing between different types of separations. A higher unemployment rate at the start of an employment relationship increases the probability of job-to-job transitions, whereas its effect on employment-to-unemployment transitions is negative. We then build a simple job ladder model to interpret our empirical results. A model with two-dimensional heterogeneity in match (job) characteristics has the same qualitative features as the data. Once the model is extended to include cyclicality in the offered match …
Forecasting Singapore Gdp Using The Spf Data, Tian Xie, Jun Yu
Forecasting Singapore Gdp Using The Spf Data, Tian Xie, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this article, we use econometric methods, machine learning methods, and a hybrid method to forecast the GDP growth rate in Singapore based on the Survey of Professional Forecasters (SPF). We compare the performance of these methods with the sample median used by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). It is shown that the relationship between the actual GDP growth rates and the forecasts from individual professionals is highly nonlinear and non-additive, making it hard for all linear methods and the sample median to perform well. It is found that the hybrid method performs the best, reducing the mean squared …

In-Fill Asymptotic Theory For Structural Break Point In Autoregressions, Liang Jiang, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu
In-Fill Asymptotic Theory For Structural Break Point In Autoregressions, Liang Jiang, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
This article obtains the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of structural break point in the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process when a continuous record is available. The exact distribution is asymmetric, tri-modal, dependent on the initial condition. These three properties are also found in the finite sample distribution of the least squares (LS) estimator of structural break point in autoregressive (AR) models. Motivated by these observations, the article then develops an in-fill asymptotic theory for the LS estimator of structural break point in the AR(1) coefficient. The in-fill asymptotic distribution is also asymmetric, tri-modal, dependent on the initial condition, and delivers …

We study whether humans or machine learning (ML) classification models are better at classifying scientific research abstracts according to a fixed set of discipline groups. We recruit both undergraduate and postgraduate assistants for this task in separate stages, and compare their performance against the support vectors machine ML algorithm at classifying European Research Council Starting Grant project abstracts to their actual evaluation panels, which are organised by discipline groups. On average, ML is more accurate than human classifiers, across a variety of training and test datasets, and across evaluation panels. ML classifiers trained on different training sets are also more …
Globalization And Top Income Shares, Lin Ma, Dimitrije Ruzic
Globalization And Top Income Shares, Lin Ma, Dimitrije Ruzic
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper documents empirically that access to global markets is associated with a higher executive-to-worker pay ratio within the firm. It then uses China's 2001 accession to the World Trade Organization as a trade shock to show that firms that exported to China prior to 2001 subsequently exported more, grew larger, and grew more unequal in terms of executive-to-worker pay. To evaluate analytically and quantitatively the impacts of globalization on top income inequality, this paper builds a model with heterogeneous firms, occupational choice, and executive compensation. In the model, executive compensation grows with the size of the firm, while the …

Realized Semicovariances, Tim Bollerslev, Jia Li, Andrew J. Patton, Rogier Quaedvlieg
Research Collection School Of Economics
We propose a decomposition of the realized covariance matrix into components based on the signs of the underlying high-frequency returns, and we derive the asymptotic properties of the resulting realized semicovariance measures as the sampling interval goes to zero. The first-order asymptotic results highlight how the same-sign and mixed-sign components load differently on economic information related to stochastic correlation and jumps. The second-order asymptotic results reveal the structure underlying the same-sign semicovariances, as manifested in the form of co-drifting and dynamic “leverage” effects. In line with this anatomy, we use data on a large cross-section of individual stocks to empirically …

Quantile Treatment Effects And Bootstrap Inference Under Covariate-Adaptive Randomization, Yichong Zhang, Xin Zheng
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this paper, we study the estimation and inference of the quantile treatment effect under covariate‐adaptive randomization. We propose two estimation methods: (1) the simple quantile regression and (2) the inverse propensity score weighted quantile regression. For the two estimators, we derive their asymptotic distributions uniformly over a compact set of quantile indexes, and show that, when the treatment assignment rule does not achieve strong balance, the inverse propensity score weighted estimator has a smaller asymptotic variance than the simple quantile regression estimator. For the inference of method (1), we show that the Wald test using a weighted bootstrap standard …
