A Win Win: College Athletes Get Paid For Their Names, Images, And Likenesses And Colleges Maintain The Primacy Of Academics, Jayma Meyer, Andrew S. Zimbalist
Economics: Faculty Publications
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Fair Pay to Play Act (SB 206) into law on September 30, 2019. The bill made it illegal for California's universities to prohibit college athletes from receiving compensation for use of their Names, Images, and Likenesses ("NILs"). Lawmakers soon introduced similar bills in other states1 and in Congress.
In this Article, we explain the history and role of amateurism in college athletics (Part I); the legal landscape of amateurism and paying college athletes, including NIL payments (Part II); the potential scope of NIL payments (Part III); and the NCAA NIL Committee’s recommendations (Part IV). …
The Economic Impact Of The Metro Manila (Ncr) Enhanced Community Quarantine, Krista Danielle Yu, Kathleen Aviso, Raymond R. Tan
The Economic Impact Of The Metro Manila (Ncr) Enhanced Community Quarantine, Krista Danielle Yu, Kathleen Aviso, Raymond R. Tan
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Metro Manila (NCR) comprises 37.5 percent of the Philippine gross domestic product (GDP) and the 30-day enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) will cause a significant decline in the national economy. This policy brief is based on a persistent inoperability input-output model to estimate two metrics: inoperability and economic losses. This takes into account the interdependent nature of the different sectors of the economy and considers the impact of the pandemic on the productivity of sectors directly affected by the ECQ such as the manufacturing, construction, trade, finance, private sector services, and transport sectors. Unlike previous model, PIIM results will provide insights …

Smith, Gregg Counties Lead Large Texas Msas In Healthcare System Capacity Per Capita. - April 2020, Manuel Reyes-Loya, Marilyn Young, Ayush Kumar
Hibbs Newsletter
In the wake of the COVID–19 pandemic, healthcare systems in areas that have seen dramatic spikes in illness from the novel coronavirus have been significantly strained. How well positioned is the East Texas healthcare infrastructure to handle the pandemic, and how does East Texas compare to the rest of the state? This issue of the Hibbs Newsletter discusses the healthcare system capacity in Greater East Texas. The Hibbs Institute finds that Smith and Gregg Counties have a robust healthcare system that rivals large Texas MSAs when capacity is evaluated on a per capita basis

Does Applying Deep Learning In Financial Sentiment Analysis Lead To Better Classification Performance?, Tao Wang, Changhe Yuan, Cuiyuan Wang
Publications and Research
Using a unique data set from Seeking Alpha, we compare the deep learning approach with traditional machine learning approaches in classifying financial text. We apply the long short-term memory (LSTM) as the deep learning method and Naive Bayes, SVM, Logistic Regression, XGBoost as the traditional machine learning approaches. The results suggest that the LSTM model outperforms the conventional machine learning methods on all metrics. Based on the tSNE graph, the success of the LSTM model is partially explained as the high-accuracy LSTM model distinguishes between positive and negative important sentiment words while those words are chosen based on SHAP values …
Transcanada’S Keystone Xl Pipeline And Its Impact On Nebraska Water Quality, Amy Chin
Transcanada’S Keystone Xl Pipeline And Its Impact On Nebraska Water Quality, Amy Chin
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
The Keystone Pipeline entered the national stage in 2010 when TransCanada proposed an extension that went through the Nebraska Sandhills, an ecosystem which contains a large portion of the Ogallala Aquifer. This is not an issue to be taken lightly – the Sandhills and Ogallala Aquifer fulfill many of the functions noted in de Groot, Wilson, and Bouman’s typology of ecosystem services. In this analysis, these two sides will converge into one research problem: exploring connections between the potential economic, social, and environmental effects of the Keystone XL Pipeline’s presence in the Sandhills region of Central Nebraska.
The analysis shall …
Job Guarantee For A Safe Community, Cassandra Boyle
Job Guarantee For A Safe Community, Cassandra Boyle
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
Many shared areas like parks and sidewalks are unkempt and sometimes unsafe. In some areas, sidewalks are in shambles which poses a trip hazard, and plants are overgrown which denies the use of the sidewalk. Also, there is trash along roadways and decaying plant buildup around fencing and buildings. Some of these issues are due to the resident not having the ability to do necessary yard work. Jobs could be created to solve and manage these issues, and these jobs will be part of a program which improves the economic and social lives of people while also improving the environment.
Import Tariffs And The Flow Of Counterfeit Goods Into The United States, Avery S. Thomson
Import Tariffs And The Flow Of Counterfeit Goods Into The United States, Avery S. Thomson
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
The world of counterfeit goods is diverse and has grown rapidly throughout the years. The boom of e-commerce has resulted in a devastating increase in the shipment of small packages into the United States, making it easier for every day consumers to be fooled by counterfeiting masterminds. Counterfeit goods are not limited to fake watches and designer purses offered on the streets of Los Angeles or New York City anymore, instead the market has expanded to include many goods like consumer electronics, footwear, apparel, cosmetics, and even medicines and personal care items. Advances in technology at border control points, advertising …
Green Jobs Guarantee, Coronavirus, And Public Sanitation, James Olderham
Green Jobs Guarantee, Coronavirus, And Public Sanitation, James Olderham
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
In recent years, the idea of the Government as an “employer of last resort” (ELR) has gained traction, both in the academic and general public spheres. While the origins of this idea can be traced through several economists, one of the most prominent conceptions of the policy comes from L. Randall Wray in his 1998 book Understanding Modern Money. In this piece, Wray outlines a policy whereby the government would offer meaningful employment to essentially anyone willing and able to work. The purpose would be to effectively solve the problem of involuntary unemployment. By putting this group of people to …
Distributed Manufacturing In Dayton: Combating Covid-19 Through Public Service Employment, Joshua Pham, Grayson Thacker
Distributed Manufacturing In Dayton: Combating Covid-19 Through Public Service Employment, Joshua Pham, Grayson Thacker
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
With the decline in manufacturing in the United States following the 1980s, many once thriving cities began to fall into economic stagnation and decline. Dayton, Ohio is one of these cities, experiencing a mass exodus of its central industry, leaving behind a labor force with mismatched skills for the current job environment and a lack of opportunity. Such unemployment has only been exacerbated by the Great Recession and the more recent economic shutdown, stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. To combat this decline and slow march to destitution, this paper proposes the implementation of a public service employment program (PSE) that …
Less Is More: Invasive Species Removal In Ohio’S Miami Valley Region As Part Of A Green Jobs Guarantee Program, Amy Chin
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
When it comes to plants and other wildlife, it is important to distinguish between quality and quantity. More green space may be pleasing to the eye, but if the green space contains invasive plants, it can cause more harm than good. Unfortunately, invasive species can be found all over Ohio – in state parks, nature preserves, local park systems, farm land, and citizens’ back yards. In this proposal, the negative impact of invasive species in Ohio will be analyzed from ecological, economic, and sociocultural lenses. The concept of an Invasive Species Removal Technician as part of a green jobs guarantee …
The “Dulled” & Disappearing Gem City: An Attempt To Restore The Social And Economic Forces Of Dayton, Ohio While Incorporating Ecological Principles, Hailey Lane
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
In 1903, Dayton garnered the greatest number of patents per capita relative to any other U.S. city. It was the epicenter for the creation of the cash register, powered flight, catalytic convertor in automobiles, parking meter, stepladder, and electric wheelchair. Dayton’s history is comprised of the dual forces of innovation and invention. While innovation is not a foreign concept to the Dayton community, it’s Silicon Valley-esque status has since dissipated and patent numbers are subsequently falling. The Great Recession reduced manufacturing in Dayton through subsequent closures in factories; this oriented Dayton towards being a more service-oriented city. (Millsap, 2017, p. …

Alternative Energy: Vested Interest In The Power Of Power, Joshua Pham
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
Through the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the future of alternative energy within the United States has been uncertain and constantly shifting. However, as the 21st century has progressed, the path for alternative energy has began to solidify and certain patterns have emerged. This article addresses the dynamics displayed through a hybrid institutional-ecological/green framework to draw insights about the underlying causes for the paths these industries have taken.

Foreign Direct Investment And Environmental Regulations, Kiel Hawk
Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
For the longevity of our species as well as much of the biodiversity that remains, understanding the environmental impact of our decisions is paramount. We are amid the 6th mass extinction in the Earth’s history, and unlike the previous five this one’s on us. Having transgressed from the Holocene to the Anthropocene, we have found ourselves in an era that has lost many of the ecological features that has enabled our species to live such high standards of living, for wealth is dependent on that which nature provides. Over the past several decades, beginning around the 1970’s, we have been …

This policy introduces a measure of choice, consonant with our culture. Those younger than 65 can make their own personal tradeoffs between heath and livelihood, while older people, knowing that the virus will be spreading more quickly through the population will be even more cautious, thus preventing their early deaths. We return decisions to people while ensuring that the sum total of decisions does not overwhelm our hospitals. One felicitous result of this policy is that the virus will spread more quickly through the healthier population. This means that when the elderly re-engage in social life they will encounter fewer …

Adaptive Rationality In Strategic Interaction: Do Emotions Regulate Thinking About Others?, Timo Ehrig, Jaison Manjaly, Aditya Singh, Shyam Sunder
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Forming beliefs or expectations about others’ behavior is fundamental to strategy, as it co-determines the outcomes of interactions in and across organizations. In the game theoretic conception of rationality, agents reason iteratively about each other to form expectations about behavior. According to prior scholarship, actual strategists fall short of this ideal, and attempts to understand the underlying cognitive processes of forming expectations about others are in their infancy. We propose that emotions help regulate iterative reasoning, that is, their tendency to not only reflect on what others think, but also on what others think about their thinking. Drawing on a …
Humanae Vitae At Fifty Years And The Economics Of The Pill, Andrew Beauchamp
Humanae Vitae At Fifty Years And The Economics Of The Pill, Andrew Beauchamp
Economics Faculty Publications
This article examines how economic analysis of the social consequences of the birth control pill dovetail with the predictions and pronouncements of Roman Catholic social teaching. Direct, equilibrium, and indirect consequences each, in turn, confirm that the advent of the pill has coincided with increased rates of divorce and out-of-wedlock births alongside increased participation of women in the formal labor market. These findings lead to the conclusion that Pope Paul VI’s Humanae Vitae and other papal teachings on sex, marriage, and the family deserve to be revisited and reevaluated in light of this history.
Paying For Free Lunch: The Impact Of Cep Universal Free Meals On Revenues, Spending, And Student Health, Michah W. Rothbart, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Emily Gutierrez
Paying For Free Lunch: The Impact Of Cep Universal Free Meals On Revenues, Spending, And Student Health, Michah W. Rothbart, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Emily Gutierrez
Center for Policy Research
The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 allows school districts to provide free meals to all students if more than 40 percent of students are individually eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. While emerging evidence documents positive effects on student behavior and academics (Gordon and Ruffini, 2019; Schwartz and Rothbart, 2020), critics worry that Universal Free Meals (UFM) has unintended consequences, including exacerbating student obesity and adding financial burden onto school districts. We use school and district level data from New York State (NYS) and a difference-in-differences design to test whether concerns over negative …
Optimal Control Of An Epidemic Through Social Distancing, Thomas Kruse, Philipp Strack
Optimal Control Of An Epidemic Through Social Distancing, Thomas Kruse, Philipp Strack
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We analyze how to optimally engage in social distancing (SD) in order to minimize the spread of an infectious disease. We identify conditions under which the optimal policy is single-peaked, i.e., first engages in increasingly more social distancing and subsequently decreases its intensity. We show that the optimal policy might delay measures that decrease the transmission rate substantially to create “herd-immunity” and that engaging in social distancing sub-optimally early can increase the number of fatalities. Finally, we find that optimal social distancing can be an effective measure in substantially reducing the death rate of a disease.
Democracy In Emerging Markets: A New Perspective On The Natural Resources Curse, André V. Mollick, Andre Vianna, Gautam Hazarika
Democracy In Emerging Markets: A New Perspective On The Natural Resources Curse, André V. Mollick, Andre Vianna, Gautam Hazarika
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
Using annual data from 1980 to 2014, we reexamine the relationship between democracy and natural resources for a large sample of emerging market economies. Controlling for human capital (or real GDP per capita) and openness measures, dynamic panel methods address endogeneity from more democratic regimes demanding better control of rents. We find that democracy responds positively to natural resource rents in GDP (NAT) and negatively to terms of trade (TOT). The NAT positive effects mitigate the negative impact of TOT on democracy and holds well in different specifications. By building on a literature focusing on oil rents, increases in NAT …

The Ncaa's Breaking Point For Equal Opportunity: A Title Ix Perspective On Name, Image, And Likeness Sponsorship Legislation, Joshua C. Sorbe
Honors Thesis
This paper analyzes the efficacy of Title IX when considering national name, image, and likeness (NIL) legislation and NCAA Division I athletic department expenditure behavior. To answer this question, I analyzed Title IX’s legislative history, current compliance rules, recent litigation, and academic literature. Using publicly-available data reported to the US Department of Education, I performed regression analysis on institutional characteristics and expenditure behaviors to assess the impact that spending behavior has on gender equity. My results show that revenue-generating sports had a large impact on spending equity, and disparities in expenditures are more distinct than participation. Ultimately, the market-based exceptions …
Using Meta-Analysis For Large-Scale Ecosystem Service Valuation: Progress, Prospects, And Challenges, Robert J. Johnston, Dana Marie Bauer
Using Meta-Analysis For Large-Scale Ecosystem Service Valuation: Progress, Prospects, And Challenges, Robert J. Johnston, Dana Marie Bauer
Economics
This article discusses prospects and challenges related to the use of meta-regression models (MRMs) for ecosystem service benefit transfer, with an emphasis on validity criteria and post-estimation procedures given sparse attention in the ecosystem services literature. We illustrate these topics using a meta-analysis of willingness to pay for water quality changes that support aquatic ecosystem services and the application of this model to estimate water quality benefits under alternative riparian buffer restoration scenarios in New Hampshire's Great Bay Watershed. These illustrations highlight the advantages of MRM benefit transfers, together with the challenges and data needs encountered when quantifying ecosystem service …

A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Cardiac Hospital-To-Home Transitional Care Program In A Singapore Academic Medical Center, Yanying @ Tan Yanying Chen, Yi Jin Tan, Ya Sun, Cheng Zhan Chua
PhD Student’s Publications Collection
BackgroundRehospitalizations are common in healthcare. They are costly for hospitals and patients and a substantial percentage are preventable, partly because hospital-to-community transitions are often unmanaged or poorly managed. In this study, we conducted a pragmatic randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a new nurse–practitioner-led transitional care program called CareHub, piloted in Singapore’s National University Hospital.MethodsStudy population included all eligible cardiac patients admitted between July 2016 and November 2016. Patients were followed for six months post-discharge. Primary outcomes other than emergency department visits were all cardiac-related: number of readmissions, specialist visits, emergency department visits, and total days readmitted. Secondary …

Policy Impact Evaluations On Labour And Health, Junxing Chay
Policy Impact Evaluations On Labour And Health, Junxing Chay
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation consists of three chapters that evaluate the impacts of public policies on labour and health.
The first chapter studies a wage supplement scheme in Singapore, called the Workfare Income Supplement, which targets older low-income workers. I exploit differences in maximum benefits across age and over time to find that increasing benefits generosity encourages labour market participation and selfemployment. I also find improved life satisfaction and happiness among those with low education, who are likely to be eligible for the scheme. These results suggest that wage supplements can ease some burdens of an ageing population.
The second chapter investigates …

Essays On Nonstationary Econometrics, Yanbo Liu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
My dissertation consists of three essays that contribute new theoretical results to robust inference procedures and machine learning algorithms in nonstationary models.
Chapter 2 compares OLS and GLS in autoregressions with integrated noise terms. Grenander and Rosenblatt (2008) gave sufficient conditions for the asymptotic equivalence of GLS and OLS in deterministic trend extraction. However when extending to univariate autoregression model yt = ρnyt−1 + ut , ρn = 1 + c nα , ut = ut−1 + t , and t is one iid disturbance term with zero expectation and σ 2 variance, the asymptotic equivalence no longer holds. Under …

Essays On A Mechanism Design Approach To The Problem Of Bilateral Trade And Public Good Provision, Cuiling Zhang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The dissertation consists of three chapters which studies a mechanism design approach to the problem of bilateral trade and public good provision.
Chapter 1 characterizes mechanisms satisfying Bayesian incentive compatibility (BIC) and interim individual rationality (IIR) in the classical public good provision problem. We propose a stress test for the results in the standard continuum type space by subject- ing them to a finite type space. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a set of techniques that allow us to characterize the efficient and optimal mechanisms in a discrete setup. Using these techniques, we conclude that many …

Three Essays On Nonstationary Time Series Econometrics, Yiu Lim Lui
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation comprises three papers that separately study different nonstationary time series models.
The first paper, titled as "The Grid Bootstrap for Continuous Time Models", is a joint work with Professor Jun Yu and Professor Weilin Xiao. It considers the grid bootstrap for constructing confidence intervals for the persistence parameter in a class of continuous-time models driven by a Lévy process. Its asymptotic validity is discussed under the assumption that the sampling interval (h) shrinks to zero, the time span (N) goes to infinity or both. Its improvement over the in-fill asymptotic theory is achieved by expanding the coefficient-based statistic …

Essays On Empirical Asset Pricing, Liyao Wang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The dissertation consists of four chapters on empirical asset pricing. The first chapter reexamines the existence of time-series momentum. Time-series momentum (TSM) refers to the predictability of the past 12-month return on the next one month return. Using the same data set as Moskowitz, Ooi, and Pedersen (2012) (MOP, henceforth), we show that asset-by-asset time-series regressions reveal little evidence of TSM, both in- and out-of-sample. While the t -statistic in a pooled regression appears large, it is not statistically reliable as it is less than the critical values of parametric and nonparametric bootstraps. From an investment perspective, the performance of …

Stock Liquidity Of Malaysian Public Listed Firms, Yee Ee Chia
Student Works (2020-2029)
This thesis is motivated by the limited research on the liquidity of Malaysian public listed firms, the growing number of liquidity horseraces, the recent data commercialization by Bursa Malaysia, and liquidity-enhancing policies being spearheaded mainly by stock exchange regulators in emerging markets. By assembling information that covers 1250 public listed non-financial firms over 2000–2015, the thesis conducts three empirical analyses on the determinants of firm liquidity and the effects of higher liquidity on firm valuation, where liquidity is proxied by the “Closing Percent Quoted Spreads” (CPQS). First, the thesis revisits the standard liquidity model and advocates the inclusion of shareholder …
