The emergence of digital currency is becoming prevalent in the age of globalization – specifically, cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain are two recently discovered concepts currently being explored by researchers and developers. Cryptocurrency is a subset of digital currency that encompasses revolutionary technology, shifting political and economic spheres in nation-states. Certain governments are more prone to the adoption of cryptocurrencies and three comparative case study countries, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela, have shared attributes that result in adoption. Existing literature exploring the effect of politically connected firms on their performance and risk-taking seems to offer decisive results for the emerging and the developed market. However, from professionals and anecdotal evidence, both markets do not exhibit similar characteristics. Considering these characteristics, instability of the government, lack thereof of adequate governance structure, I revisit the topic. This study comprises 27 advanced and 20 emerging economies for the years 1992 through 2016. I find that sound political environment drives risk-taking in advanced markets, while political connections drive corporate risk-taking in emerging markets. Chapter 1 analyzes endogenous horizontal product differentiation in a two-sided market with two platforms based on a two-stage Hotelling model. When the two sides are both single-homing, the platforms will choose maximal product differentiation in the equilibrium. However, when one side is multi-homing, and the multi-homing side views the platforms indifferent, the platforms choose minimal product differentiation in the equilibrium.

National parks have recently seen increased visitation demand. Glacier National Park is located in an area where changes in weather and climate will occur at an accelerated rate. Changes in fire and precipitation regimes are taking place at a time when Glacier National Park is setting new visitation records. This paper uses regression and forecast models to investigate the changing landscape of park visitation.

Findings suggest important impacts to monthly visitation and cycling on Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park are associated with forest fire activity and precipitation. The conclusions of this paper support perceptions about the effect natural occurrences …

The paper uses the natural setting of cricket to test theoretical predictions in game theory. In this setting, the agents play a one-shot-two-person constant sum game. The paper assesses whether trained professionals in cricket follow the `mix' of strategies predicted by Nash equilibria. The test uses a unique dataset derived from commentary data comprising of bowler and batsman strategies and outcomes. The paper creates a model for bowler-bastman interactions in cricket and uses this in conjunction with the data to generate predicted Nash equilibrium frequencies. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะศึกษา Be@rbrick ในฐานะของสะสม โดยแบ่งการศึกษาออกเป็น 2 ส่วน ส่วนแรกศึกษาทางฝั่งผู้ผลิตในการสร้างมูลค่าเชิงสัญญะให้กับสินค้า โดยใช้แนวคิดของ ฌอง โบดริยาร์ด เนื่องจากการบริโภคของผู้คนยุคนี้ไม่ใช่แค่การใช้หรือเสพสินค้าที่เป็นวัตถุรูปธรรมเท่านั้น แต่มีด้านของการเสพสัญญะอยู่ด้วย โดยมีปัจจัยอื่น ๆ เช่น กลไกการตลาดเป็นตัวสนับสนุน ส่วนที่สองศึกษาในด้านพฤติกรรมของกลุ่มคนที่สะสม Be@rbrick โดยใช้แนวคิดเรื่องการสร้างความโดดเด่นทางสังคมของ ปีแอร์ บูร์ดิเยอ ที่วิเคราะมิติการบริโภคโดยเน้นที่เรื่องทุนทางเศรษฐกิจและทุนทางวัฒนธรรม ผลที่ได้นั้นพบว่าผู้ผลิตใช้การร่วมมือกับบริษัทเจ้าของผลิตภัณฑ์สินค้า ตัวละครจากภาพยนตร์ ดนตรี แฟชั่นเฮ้าส์ งานศิลปะ และวัฒนธรรมประชานิยมที่ได้รับความนิยมและมีคุณค่าสูงต่อผู้บริโภคอยู่แล้ว โดยนำความรับรู้ของผู้บริโภคต่อสินค้าเหล่านั้น มาใช้ออกแบบลวดลายบน Be@rbrick เป็นการใช้กระบวนการเข้ารหัสให้กลายเป็นสัญญะต่าง ๆ เช่น สัญญะของความหรูหรา สัญญะด้านความทรงจำที่ประทับใจในอดีต สัญญะด้านการฉลองวาระพิเศษ เพื่อเพิ่มมูลค่าแก่ผลิตภัณฑ์ของตน โดยใช้กลไกการตลาดและการสร้างกลุ่มผลิตภัณฑ์เป็นส่วนเสริม ส่งผลให้ผลิตภัณฑ์ได้รับความนิยมอย่างต่อเนื่องยาวนาน ส่วนในด้านนักสะสมพบว่านักสะสมใช้ Be@rbrick เพื่อสร้างตัวตนโดยการแสดงอัตลักษณ์อันหลากหลายผ่านกิจกรรมการบริโภค นอกจากนี้การสร้างชุดสะสม Be@rbrick ยังสามารถสะท้อนถึงระดับของทุนทางเศรษฐกิจและทุนทางวัฒนธรรมที่มีของเจ้าของชุดสะสม โดยทุนทางเศรษฐกิจที่สูงจะส่งผลต่อจำนวนชิ้นและมูลค่าของชุดสะสม ทุนทางเศรษฐกิจที่น้อยลง ขนาดและมูลค่าของชุดสะสมก็จะลดน้อยตามไปด้วย ในขณะเดียวกันทุนทางวัฒนธรรมก็จะทำหน้าที่ในการเพิ่มคุณค่าของชุดสะสม ทุนทางวัฒนธรรมที่มากกว่าย่อมจะส่งเสริมให้นักสะสมสามารถใช้ความรู้ที่มีในการคัดเลือกชิ้นงานของสะสมให้ประกอบขึ้นเป็นชุดสะสมที่มีคุณค่ามากขึ้นตามทุนทางวัฒนธรรมที่มีของตน

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะศึกษาบทบาทของโขนภายใต้การเปลี่ยนสังคมการเมืองไทย ซึ่งมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงบทบาทไปในลักษณะต่าง ๆ โดยศึกษาว่ามีลักษณะใดบ้าง ใครเป็นผู้ดำเนินการเพื่อสร้างบทบาทใหม่ของโขนในแต่ละช่วงเวลา โดยศึกษาผ่านการวิเคราะห์โดยใช้แนวคิดการครองอำนาจนำผลจากการศึกษาพบว่า พัฒนาการและบทบาทของโขนที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปในแต่ละช่วงเวลาถูกกำหนดโดยชนชั้นปกครอง สะท้อนออกมาในรูปแบบของการใช้โขนเป็นเครื่องมือทางการเมืองเพื่อผลประโยชน์ของตนเอง โดยบทบาทของโขนในสมัยสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์แรกเริ่มเป็นการละเล่นเพื่อแสดงถึงสถานะและความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของพระมหากษัตริย์ ต่อมาบทบาทความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ถูกลดความสำคัญลงไป เหลือเพียงเป็นมหรสพการแสดงเพื่อแสดงศักดานุภาพของพระมหากษัตริย์และแสดงเพื่อความสำราญส่วนพระองค์ ภายหลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง 2475 สถานะของโขนถูกเปลี่ยนแปลงหน่วยงานผู้ดูแลจากโขนในราชสำนักมาสู่โขนของรัฐบาล จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงครามได้สร้างบทบาทของโขนผูกกับความเป็นชาติ ต่อมา ม.ร.ว. คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมชเป็นผู้พัฒนาให้เกาะเกี่ยวคุณค่าของความเป็นไทยและสถาบันกษัตริย์ ซึ่งทั้งหมดล้วนเป็นไปเพื่อผลประโยชน์ของผู้ดำเนินการทั้งสิ้น ต่อมาเมื่อรัฐบาลเริ่มลดบทบาทการใช้โขนเป็นเครื่องมือทางการเมืองลง โขนจึงสามารถพัฒนาให้มีลักษณะเป็นมหรสพการแสดงเพื่อความบันเทิงสำหรับประชาชนอย่างแท้จริงในยุคสมัยนายเสรี หวังในธรรม ทำให้มีจำนวนผู้ชมเพิ่มมากขึ้นในช่วงเวลานี้ ซึ่งดำรงอยู่ได้ในระยะเวลาหนึ่ง และกลับมาประสบปัญหาความซบเซาในด้านจำนวนคนดูลงอีกครั้ง ต่อมากลุ่มสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นผู้ดำเนินการผลิตโขนของตนเอง ในนามโขนศาลาเฉลิมกรุงและโขนพระราชทาน ซึ่งมีลักษณะเกาะเกี่ยวคุณค่าและอุดมการณ์ของสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ และสามารถทำให้การแสดงโขนกลับมาเป็นกระแสของคนดูอีกครั้ง เป็นการเน้นการรับรู้ถึงคุณค่าของสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ในฐานะผู้อนุรักษ์งานศิลป์ของแผ่นดิน จะเห็นได้ว่ารูปแบบและวิธีการในการใช้โขนเป็นเครื่องมือทางการเมืองของชนชั้นปกครอง สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการสร้างภาวะการครองอำนาจนำทางวัฒนธรรมของชนชั้นปกครอง เพื่อตอบสนองต่อผลประโยชน์ต่อตัวผู้กระทำการเอง และยังส่งผลให้โขนเปลี่ยนแปลงบทบาทในลักษณะต่าง ๆ

Access To Higher Education, Job Mismatch, And Wage Penalties In Thailand, Palita Saripan

This study considers whether close proximity to higher education institutions increases the probability of earning a bachelor’s degree, overeducation, and horizontal mismatch between degree and occupation. Using data from the 2015 and 2016 Labor Force Survey of the National Statistical Office of Thailand, and jobs data from the Ministry of Labor, we find that individuals living in provinces with research or Rajabhat universities are more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree, but does not increase the probability of being overeducated for their job. In addition, we find larger overeducation penalties in provinces with universities. Finally, qualitative analysis shows that demand …

People reason about uncertainty with deliberately incomplete models, including only the most relevant variables. How do people hampered by different, incomplete views of the world learn from each other? We introduce a model of “model-based inference.” Model-based reasoners partition an otherwise hopelessly complex state space into a manageable model. We nd that unless the differences in agents’ models are trivial, interactions will often not lead agents to have common beliefs, and indeed the correct-model belief will typically lie outside the convex hull of the agents’ beliefs. “Crowds” are often regarded as “wiser” than individuals, and prediction markets are often regarded as effective methods for harnessing this wisdom. If the agents in prediction markets are Bayesians who share a common model and prior belief, then the no-trade theorem implies that we should see no trade in the market.
