The Long-Run Effects Of The Olympics On Host Cities, Frank Stephens Apr 2019

The Long-Run Effects Of The Olympics On Host Cities, Frank Stephens

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This research project explores the extent to which cities that host the Olympics end up not benefiting as much as anticipated. Being a host city for the Olympics can be very pricey, as it costs to bid for the Olympics. Along with bidding for the event, there are additional infrastructure costs for the influx of people attracted to the event. Cities can typically spend $50 million to $100 million in fees for consultants, event organizers, and travel related to hosting duties. After this, if they actually win the bid, cities will usually add roads, build or enhance airports, and construct …

The Name Of The Game: Does A Person’S Name Contribute To Socio-Economic Success?, Cameron Morford Apr 2019

The Name Of The Game: Does A Person’S Name Contribute To Socio-Economic Success?, Cameron Morford

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

When a person is born, the first gift they receive is their name. Names are powerful. They represent family, culture, and personality. Names are as diverse and complex as the people who bear them. But do names really matter? Do different names establish a foundation for social and economic success in a child’s future? Furthermore, do people who possess traditionally ethnic names experience more discrimination than those who don’t? Academic literature identifies large amounts of discrimination against individuals who possess distinctively African-American or Hispanic names. However, this study tests the assumptions and behavioral economic theories associated with society’s view of …

Unskilled Labor Shortage In Housing Development Industry, Beck Baird Apr 2019

Unskilled Labor Shortage In Housing Development Industry, Beck Baird

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Shortage of unskilled labor in the housing construction industry is going to have an adverse effect on the housing market. The purpose of this study is to identify what is causing this shortage of unskilled labor as well as what problems are anticipated to arise in the near future. The first problem outlined in the research is the extremely low unemployment rates that the United States currently has. Low unemployment rates throughout the entire economy cause high unemployment rates in less desirable jobs such as the housing construction industry, since this an inferior industry to workers. The next problem discussed …

The Role Of Insured Bushels And Pre-Harvest Hedging For An Eastern Nebraska County Under Rain-Fed Growing Conditions, Cory Walters, Richard Preston Apr 2019

The Role Of Insured Bushels And Pre-Harvest Hedging For An Eastern Nebraska County Under Rain-Fed Growing Conditions, Cory Walters, Richard Preston

Cornhusker Economics

At the beginning of the crop year crop producers face unknown yields and prices resulting in a large range of end of season (fall) net income. Producers can chose to participate in risk management tools, resulting in a reshaping of the fall net income distribution. Two of the most common tools are crop insurance and pre-harvest hedging (hereafter referred to as hedging). The most common crop insurance policy sold today is Revenue Protection (RP) where both yield and prices are insured. RP policy represents an intriguing crop insurance contract since it not only insures against price declines between spring and …

Parkersburg Area Economic Outlook 2019-2024, Danielle Kaminski, Patrick Opitz, Ian Wylie, John Deskins, Brian Lego

Bureau of Business & Economic Research

The Parkersburg Area economy has generally struggled over the past several years. The five-county region avoided the economic downturn that plagued several regions in West Virginia between 2012 and 2015, as payrolls increased nearly 2,000 during this period of time. In more recent years, however, the Parkersburg Area economy has struggled significantly, with payrolls falling by more than 3,700 by mid-2018. The region’s economy does appear to have stabilized thanks to some recent growth in natural gas output and pipeline infrastructure as well as continued development of the Hino manufacturing facility, economic recovery remains tenuous due to structural issues that …

Does Family Size Negatively Affect Child Health Outcomes In The United States?, Ji Sue Song Apr 2019

Does Family Size Negatively Affect Child Health Outcomes In The United States?, Ji Sue Song

Economics Honors Projects

This paper explores the relationship between family size and child health outcomes in the United States. More specifically, it attempts to determine if the number of siblings has a causal effect on child health. Becker’s Quantity-Quality tradeoff suggests that more children (quantity) results to unhealthier children (quality). The main estimation strategy is the use of instrumental variables, for family size and health outcomes can be jointly determined by parental characteristics unseen and unaccounted for. In addition, a sub-analysis on families below the poverty line is conducted to see the additional effect of another child under more constricted circumstances. Lastly, the …

An Economic Growth Analysis Of Native American Reservations In California, Mahsa Ashabi

Economics Faculty Publications

A history of institutional oppression and genocide has shaped Native American communities across the United States today, reflected in large disparities of socioeconomic outcomes and productivity. Due to a lack of comprehensive data and macroeconomic research, alternative forms of spatial data and theories regarding human settlement develop a lens of understanding of this stagnation. In our efforts to better understand growth on Native American reservations, we utilize nighttime lights data to proxy for economic output in these geographic areas, measuring the settlement characteristics of reservations themselves and against surrounding U.S. regions. Through a series of log-log regressions that focus on Zipf’s …

Optimal Control Theory And Estimation Of Parameters In A Differential Equation Model For Patients With Lupus, Peter Agaba

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

System Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder that affects many parts of the body including skin, joints, kidneys, brains and other organs. Lupus Nephritis (LN) is a disease caused by SLE. Given the complexity of LN, we establish an optimal treatment strategy based on a previously developed mathematical model. For our thesis work, the model variables are: Immune Complexes (I), Pro-inflammatory mediators (P), Damaged tissue (D), and Anti-inflammatory mediators (A). The analysis in this research project focuses on analyzing therapeutic strategies to control damage using both parameter estimation techniques (integration of data to quantify any uncertainties associated with …

The purpose of this study is to find the strongest factors that affect the academic performance of undergraduate students in Bryant University. The main objective is to provide undergraduate students with information that will help them better understand the variables that positively or negatively affect their GPA. The data for this study was gathered by sending out a questionnaire that contained …

A Panel Data Study Of The Determinants Of Life Expectancy In Low Income Countries, Taylor Rizzo Apr 2019

A Panel Data Study Of The Determinants Of Life Expectancy In Low Income Countries, Taylor Rizzo

Honors Projects in Economics

This study attempts to determine the impact of several socioeconomic determinants of life expectancy for 34 low income countries using ordinary least squares linear regression. Most explanatory variables were statistically significant, implying that the socioeconomic variables of interest, including government health expenditures, access to basic sanitation facilities, HIV prevalence, urbanization, education, and sex, are important measures in influencing life expectancy. Foreign aid, corruption, and undernourishment, were determined insignificant when determining life expectancy. Based on the analysis results, it has been suggested that these developing countries implement appropriate policies and programs to increase HIV education and preventative measures, increase women’s rights …

Effects Of Terrorism On The U.S. Stock Market: Evidence From High Frequency Data, Kyla Scanlon

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This paper investigates the effects that terrorist attacks and mass shootings had on the U.S. stock market, using high frequency intraday data to identify stock price and variability reactions in the hours after the attack. The impact that terrorist attacks had on price level variability was examined using the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model. The market reaction to domestic versus foreign attacks was examined to measure a potential for contagion across financial markets. The potential for flight-to-safety/quality and capital reallocation in response to terrorist attacks were measured using ordinary least squares (OLS) model, measuring the respective betas of small …

The Effect Of Birth Order On Behavior On Behavior And Academic Performance, Maria Long Apr 2019

The Effect Of Birth Order On Behavior On Behavior And Academic Performance, Maria Long

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This paper studies the effect of birth order on a child’s math and reading comprehension aptitudes and likelihood of behavior problems. Numerous studies have been performed on this topic and the conclusions have varied. In this paper, I control for gender, race, number of siblings, mother’s age at birth, mother’s marital status at birth of child, and how often children argue with their parents about homework. I find evidence to suggest that first-born children will have significantly higher academic performance outcomes, last-born children will have significantly lower behavior issues, and the environment in which a child is raised will have …

Opioid Overdose And Unemployment In The Uk, Hayden Grace Apr 2019

Opioid Overdose And Unemployment In The Uk, Hayden Grace

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Opioid overdose in the United Kingdom has risen drastically over the last few years along with the rise in the use of zero-hours contracts. Zero-hours contracts are contracts for employment that guarantee no work but can anchor a person to a job that doesn’t pay above minimum wage when they do not receive work. Since opioid use is often associated with poorer economic conditions in the United States, this paper attempts to measure any correlation between poverty and opioid use in the UK. Using zero-hours contracts as a proxy for underemployment we use several regression models to determine the predictability …

Debt Accumulation And Economic Growth In Emerging Market Economies: Is Debt Promoting Or Hindering Growth?, Kelly Stone Apr 2019

Debt Accumulation And Economic Growth In Emerging Market Economies: Is Debt Promoting Or Hindering Growth?, Kelly Stone

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently warned of the growing accumulation of debt in emerging market economies (EMEs) and the potential for debt crises, a clear warning for investors (Allen, 2018). While the IMF suggests investors may be better served elsewhere, EMEs hold an integral role in the international market as consumers, producers, and entrepreneurs. Despite regular research on advanced economies, middle income countries like EMEs are often ignored. As EMEs grapple with their inability to overcome the current increase in the value of the US Dollar, this study works to understand how debt impacts economic growth and other governance …

Aspirations To Empire: American Imperialism, Foreign Policy, And The 1954 Guatemalan Coup D’État, Mary Creedon

Economics Student Scholarship

When the sun began to set on the British Empire - the largest the world had ever seen and the dominant world power for over a century – in the aftermath of World War II, the United States designated itself the new arbiter of international relations. Wielding economic imperialism as an Empire-building tool, the U.S., through interference in the internal affairs of countries around the globe, became the world’s dominant superpower. In particular, the United States developed a pattern of interfering in the domestic sphere of Latin American nations to protect the economic interests of American capitalists. Through a historical …

Falta De Dirección: Conflictos Dentro Del Movimiento Indígena De La Provincia De Chimborazo, Yann Dardonville

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Economic Viability Of Light Water Small Modular Nuclear Reactors: General Methodology And Vendor Data, Geoffrey A. Black, Fatih Aydogan, Cassandra L. Koerner Apr 2019

Economic Viability Of Light Water Small Modular Nuclear Reactors: General Methodology And Vendor Data, Geoffrey A. Black, Fatih Aydogan, Cassandra L. Koerner

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Increasing global energy demand coupled with the need to reduce carbon and other greenhouse gases make investments in new carbon-free energy technologies more important than ever. One promising new technology is light water small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). Their relatively small size, modular design, reduced construction times, enhanced safety and other features make them a potentially attractive energy source. A critical element in assessing their potential for future development, however, is their economic viability relative to other energy sources. The most common metric to assess a power system’s economic viability is the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). The LCOE method …
