International Migration And Fdi: Can Migrant Networks Foster Investments Toward Origin Countries?, Trang Heidi Luu
International Migration And Fdi: Can Migrant Networks Foster Investments Toward Origin Countries?, Trang Heidi Luu
Honors Projects
With the growing trends of international migration, the literature looking at the economic impact of migrants has also expanded, focusing on both the perspectives of the host and the origin countries in regard to various aspects such as labor force growth, GDP growth, and poverty rates. In the specific literature investigating the impact of migrants on origin countries, FDI is a key factor that cannot be overlooked, as it can play an essential role in the economic development of origin countries. Studies in this area have hypothesized that migrants’ impact on FDI is positive, since the information about the origin …
Impact Of Female Labor Participation In African Countries, Emmanuel N. Obodoechine
Impact Of Female Labor Participation In African Countries, Emmanuel N. Obodoechine
Honors College Theses
Females are overlooked for employment opportunities either due to stereotypes or misleading views on their productivity and importance to the workplace. Female participation in the labor market has been shown to positively impact economic growth. Highlighting the significant impact of females in the labor force is an incentive for the local government and private sector to actively engage in policies and practices that increase female participation. Given the importance of targeting females, this paper analyzes female labor participation impact on economic growth for 21 African countries between 1991 and 2017. Results show that a 10 percent increase in female labor …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 25, 2019, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 1.21% during March of 2019. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, implies moderate economic growth in Nebraska through the fall of 2019. Strong business expectations were again the primary reason for the increase in the leading indicator. Respondents to the March Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. There also was growth in manufacturing hours-worked and a drop in initial claims for unemployment insurance during March 2019.
Local Job Multipliers In The United States: Variation With Local Characteristics And With High-Tech Shocks, Timothy J. Bartik, Nathan Sotherland
Local Job Multipliers In The United States: Variation With Local Characteristics And With High-Tech Shocks, Timothy J. Bartik, Nathan Sotherland
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper provides new estimates of local job multipliers, the ratio of total jobs generated to some initial number of jobs created from a demand shock. Multipliers greatly affect benefits versus costs of local job-creation policies. These new estimates rely on improved methodology and data. The methodology better captures dynamic effects of demand shocks, specifies the model so that demand shocks are more comparable, and is more general in the types of demand shocks that are considered. The data has more industry detail than that used in previous studies. The local job multipliers estimated tend to be about one-quarter lower …

Marxist Implementation Of Climate Change As A Geopolitical Fear Tactic, Katelyn Larossa
Marxist Implementation Of Climate Change As A Geopolitical Fear Tactic, Katelyn Larossa
Senior Honors Theses
In recent years the climate change debate has shifted from the peripheries of international political discussions to center stage, manifesting in the Paris Agreement in November of 2016 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, the science behind the climate change debate is disputed and does not support the claims made by global leaders who continue to push for increasing environmental regulations and financial aid to those most adversely affected by the supposed climate change (underdeveloped and developing nations). Examining the geopolitical and economic implications of climate change actions reveals the underlying political philosophies guiding global leaders. …
A Cge-Model Analysis Of U.S. Imposed Automotive Tariffs, Angela Li
A Cge-Model Analysis Of U.S. Imposed Automotive Tariffs, Angela Li
Undergraduate Economic Review
Using a computable generable equilibrium (CGE) model, this research paper evaluates the effects of a U.S. imposed 25% automotive import tariff on NAFTA countries and the European Union, the greatest U.S. automotive trade partners. Three simulations were conducted: the implementation of tariffs with no retaliation, equivalent retaliation on the same products, and retaliation on the top exports of politically significant states, with sensitivity analysis applied in the final scenario. The results demonstrate that the EU is marginally affected while the NAFTA countries experience the greatest increases in prices and reduction in total wages.
Survival Strategies: A Study Of Working Families In New York City, Kafui Gozey
Survival Strategies: A Study Of Working Families In New York City, Kafui Gozey
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
The main focus for this project was to find out how working families survive life in New York City which is known to be one of the most expensive places to live on earth. In effort to find answers to this, I visited the city for a period of two weeks to observe the lives of locals and also to interact with them. After days of interactions and gathering information, it was evident that there is a huge population of working families in New York who struggle to make ends meet. It was also made clear that these families do …
Do Private Household Transfers To The Elderly Respond To Public Pension Benefits? Evidence From Rural China, Plamen Nikolov, Alan Adelman
Do Private Household Transfers To The Elderly Respond To Public Pension Benefits? Evidence From Rural China, Plamen Nikolov, Alan Adelman
Economics Faculty Scholarship
Aging populations in developing countries have spurred the introduction of public pension programs to preserve the standard of living for the elderly. The often-overlooked mechanism of intergenerational transfers, however, can dampen these intended policy effects, as adult children who make income contributions to their parents could adjust their behavior in response to changes in their parents’ income. Exploiting a unique policy intervention in China, we examine using a difference-in-difference-in-differences (DDD) approach how a new pension program impacts inter vivos transfers. We show that pension benefits lower the propensity of adult children to transfer income to elderly parents in the context …

Limit Pricing Oligopoly Market Evidence From Tamilnadu Politics, Pazhani Samy
Economics Publications
Limit pricing oligopoly market is a hypothetical market explained with various hypotheses in the literature which has limited scope for the real world economic evidence and its application which leads the impact of the operation of such market is mostly unknown among the policymakers and academics. The available literature evidences are mostly neglected to explore the scope of such markets conditions and failed to direct appropriate policies.
In India among most of the national level parties and in the states levels there are two only have been surviving over the long periods. This trigger the intuition to inquire into answer …
Dependent Coverage Mandates And Moral Hazard, Fred Bedsworth
Dependent Coverage Mandates And Moral Hazard, Fred Bedsworth
Applied Econometrics Workshops
Empirical studies have found it difficult to separately identify adverse selection from moral hazard since the individual effects tend to affect observable behavior in the same way. Using the state level dependent coverage mandates that were passed before the Affordable Care Act's dependent coverage mandate took effect, I am able to control for selection into insurance and more credibly identify moral hazard. More specifically, I use the variation in eligibility criteria and the timing of implementations of the mandates across states over time in order to discern among the individual effects of hidden information. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor …

Differences In Tsimane Children’S Growth Outcomes And Associated Determinants As Estimated By Who Standards Vs. Within-Population References, Melanie Martin, Aaron Blackwell, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Anthropometric measures are commonly converted to age stratified z-scores to examine variation in growth outcomes in mixed-age and sex samples. For many study populations, z-scores will differ if calculated from World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards or within-population references. The specific growth reference used may influence statistical estimates of growth outcomes and their determinants, with implications for biological inference. We examined factors associated with growth outcomes in a sample of 152 Tsimane children aged 0–36 months. The Tsimane are a subsistence-scale population in the Bolivian Amazon with high rates of infectious disease and growth faltering. To examine the influence of …
Nebraska Strong - Social Capital In Action, Marilyn R. Schlake
Nebraska Strong - Social Capital In Action, Marilyn R. Schlake
Cornhusker Economics
We have heard it and we have witnessed it in action. Nebraska Strong has been a unifying message that is bringing Nebraskans, friends and family together from across the nation. Signifying strength, determination, and a resolve to rebuild, Nebraska Strong has bolstered communities and individuals who have, in some cases, lost all semblance of what they had prior to the disastrous March blizzard and floods. Through this simple message, individuals have begun to utilize their social group networks or social capital to support recovery efforts.
Through the study of communities that have experienced major disasters, researchers found the existence of …

Migration, Return Migration, And Economic Development In Latin America, Jose R. Bucheli
Migration, Return Migration, And Economic Development In Latin America, Jose R. Bucheli
Economics ETDs
This dissertation presents a collection of essays that study ways in which human mobility affects economic development in origin countries. It focuses on Latin America—a region historically connected to episodes of large-scale migration, recipient of significant remittance flows, and victim of sluggish economic growth. The first two chapters examine the effects of return migration from the United States on aggregate economic welfare and non-state violence in communities of origin in Mexico. The analysis is motivated by the historic reversal in the Mexico-U.S. migration flows in the early 2000s. The third chapter analyzes the interaction between remittances, migration, and secondary school …
The Effect Of A Changing Marriage Age On Marriage Continuity, Sarah Gargan
The Effect Of A Changing Marriage Age On Marriage Continuity, Sarah Gargan
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
Marriage stability has a wide range of determinants, such as education, marital history, and demographic characteristics. Age at marriage, however, has repeatedly been cited as one of the most important influences. Since the 1950s, divorce rates and the mean age at marriage for both men and women have seen a great deal of change. Past studies suggest that an early age at marriage is associated with a higher risk of divorce. Studies also propose that this relationship only holds up to a certain point. Changes to marriage age and divorce rates can have unforeseen interactions with cohabitation, fertility, educational attainment, …

The Effect Of Air Quality On Us Labor Market Participation, Grant Taylor Miller
The Effect Of Air Quality On Us Labor Market Participation, Grant Taylor Miller
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
The adverse effects of deteriorating air quality on both human health and labor markets have become well-documented in epidemiological and economic literature. Health-conscious policymakers are presented with the challenge of implementing environmental regulations without causing substantial economic disturbance to industry employment, productivity, and wages. However, the social benefits of better health outcomes may correspond with economic benefits that outweigh the costs. Using data from the Current Population Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index, this study uses a multivariate fixed effects regression approach to estimate the relationship between air quality and various measures of labor market participation across …

Proper understanding of this dynamics enables policy-makers to develop pragmatic projection with regards to government expenditure on some essential …
The Role Of Income Inequality As A Predictor Of Per Capita Gross Domestic Product, Daniel Friedberg
The Role Of Income Inequality As A Predictor Of Per Capita Gross Domestic Product, Daniel Friedberg
Student Scholar Showcase
The role of income inequality in relation to gross domestic product is of great importance in modern time. Income inequality is a pressing phenomenon in the fields of economics, politics, and sociology, while Gross Domestic Product is the benchmark statistic in measuring the health of any economy. But how well does income inequality serve as a predictor for the level of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) GDP per capita within a nation? This cross-sectional study determines that the GINI Index has no significant statistical relationship with PPP GDP per capita level. While income inequality is a major economic variable that contributes …

High Reliability In A Constrained Environment, Isaac Rhea
Student Research Symposium
This paper seeks to understand the effects of formal and informal constraints on the operations and success of Highly Reliable Teams. Constraints reduce the risks that are inherently present during missions, but formal constraints, such as policies and standard operating procedures, are limited by the ability of regulators and teams to anticipate problems. Culture, social norms, and other informal constraints are not subject to the same limitation, and develop over time to support the process of complex problem solving in emergency response situations.

Theorizing The Social Determinants Of Breast Cancer In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Family Health Nursing Perspective, Rosemary W. Eustace, Tumaini Nyamhanga, Eunice Lee
Theorizing The Social Determinants Of Breast Cancer In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Family Health Nursing Perspective, Rosemary W. Eustace, Tumaini Nyamhanga, Eunice Lee
Seminars in Local and Global Regional Economies
The aim of this presentation is to discuss the theorizing process of a Family Health Strength-Based Socio-Ecological Model of Breast Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa and the model’s meaning to family nursing practice. The major purpose of theorizing this model is to explore the social determinants of breast cancer within and external to the family system. The model is developed based on key realities inductively generated from integrated and empirical evidence on breast cancer in the region. Understanding the social contexts of health from this multilevel holistic systems approach offers nurses opportunities to prioritize research and interventions in disease prevention and …
The Impact Of Different Data Processing Methods On Site-Specific Management Recommendation, Taro Mieno, Joe D. Luck, Zhengzheng Gao
The Impact Of Different Data Processing Methods On Site-Specific Management Recommendation, Taro Mieno, Joe D. Luck, Zhengzheng Gao
Cornhusker Economics
Precision agriculture has the potential to enhance farming profitability substantially via site-specific management of fields. One of the promising ways of generating such profitability-enhancing input is to a use recommendation map is on-farm randomized trials. The process of generating an input (say nitrogen) using a recommendation map typically involves the following steps:
1. Design and implement randomized input use trial
2. Collect yield data along with other field characteristics (Slope, Electrical Conductivity, and Organic Matter)
3. Process the data for statistical analysis
4. Conduct regression analysis to estimate production function (how the input affect crop yield)
5. For each of …
Do Economic Inequalities Affect Long-Run Cooperation & Prosperity?, Gabriele Camera, Cary Deck, David Porter
Do Economic Inequalities Affect Long-Run Cooperation & Prosperity?, Gabriele Camera, Cary Deck, David Porter
ESI Working Papers
We explore if fairness and inequality motivations affect cooperation in indefinitely repeated games. Each round, we randomly divided experimental participants into donor-recipient pairs. Donors could make a gift to recipients, and ex-ante earnings are highest when all donors give. Roles were randomly reassigned every period, which induced inequality in ex-post earnings. Theoretically, income-maximizing players do not have to condition on this inequality because it is payoff-irrelevant. Empirically, payoff-irrelevant inequality affected participants’ ability to coordinate on efficient play: donors conditioned gifts on their own past roles and, with inequalities made visible, discriminated against those who were better off.

The Externalities Of Sprawl Development, Rayvon Solomon
The Externalities Of Sprawl Development, Rayvon Solomon
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
With total population and urban development ever increasing in the United States, economists must consider the environmental impact of human infrastructure before it is too late. This research project examines the feasibility of urban sprawl within the United States from an ecological standpoint. Sprawl is “…defined as a pattern of urban and metropolitan growth that reflects low-density, automobile-dependent, exclusionary new development…” and is a significant economic factor that has social, political, and cultural repercussions (Squires, 2002). Land conservation, farming efficiency, and other sustainability efforts have been discussed in great detail by scholars across various disciplines, yet most major cities lack …
