Planning To Fail: The Eurozone, Its Sovereign Debt Crisis, And The Future Of The Union, Kyle Whitworth Apr 2018

Planning To Fail: The Eurozone, Its Sovereign Debt Crisis, And The Future Of The Union, Kyle Whitworth

Theses

The European Union has been one of the greatest accomplishments of modern history. Through economic and political integration has ended centuries of warfare on the continent while producing the worlds largest trading bloc. Despite the initial success of the monetary union and its single currency, the Union has been bogged down economic troubles in the form of a debt crisis among several of the member states. The recovery period of the crisis has produced growth that is slow and uneven. Countries such as Germany has assumed the role of the economic powerhouse of Europe and therefore a political leader in …

Effectiveness Of Different Regime Types In Preserving Common Resources: Evidence From A Lab Experiment, David Bates Apr 2018

Effectiveness Of Different Regime Types In Preserving Common Resources: Evidence From A Lab Experiment, David Bates

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This experiment is based on a game-theoretic problem that has troubled the field of political economy since people first started grazing cows in pastures: how can economies best solve collective action problems? This experiment looks at one aspect of this question—types of governance. Are different styles of government (democracies, dictatorships, etc) more or less likely to prevent a common-pool resource (as these goods are called by Elinor Ostrom) from being depleted? Or is the style of governance irrelevant to the question of whether a CPR (common-pool resource) is sustained?

The problem of CPRs (common pool resources) is much the same …

The Ethanol Renewable Identification Number Price Fight And Nebraska Agriculture, Richard K. Perrin Apr 2018

The Ethanol Renewable Identification Number Price Fight And Nebraska Agriculture, Richard K. Perrin

Cornhusker Economics

The petroleum industry has launched a fierce political fight against the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the regulations that require renewable fuels such as ethanol to be blended into the motor fuel supply. The industry complains that meeting those requirements has become too expensive. President Trump has been presiding over frequent White House meetings to address the issue, with corn-state senators leading corn/ ethanol constituents in confrontation with Texas senators leading the petroleum refiners.

The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant Apr 2018

The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Young adults throughout the United States and other countries participate in “gap years,” or time away from school, often for travel, work, or volunteering. This practice is promoted as a way to mature and refocus. However, some worry that it lowers the likelihood of college completion. Previous literature has investigated the academic, social, and personal benefits of gap years with mixed results; however selection into gap years confounds the true impact with unobservable personal characteristics. To overcome selection issues, I exploit an exogenous policy change that lowered age requirements for missionary service, a unique type of gap year, resulting in …

Cooler Heads Prevail: An Experimental Study On The “Cooling” Effect Of The Strategy Method On Agent Resentment, Jing L. Davis Apr 2018

Cooler Heads Prevail: An Experimental Study On The “Cooling” Effect Of The Strategy Method On Agent Resentment, Jing L. Davis

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This study investigates whether agents’ resentment of controls in a gift-exchange game can be effectively mitigated using the strategy method where agents’ effort choices are elicited contingent on all possible contract choices by principals. The results suggest that allowing agents to contemplate contract choices prospectively results in less resentment and that agents exert higher effort than without this “cooling” process.

Green Competition, Hybrid Equilibrium, And Establishment Of A Resale Market, Arthur J. Caplan, Reza Oladi Apr 2018

Green Competition, Hybrid Equilibrium, And Establishment Of A Resale Market, Arthur J. Caplan, Reza Oladi

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates competition between firms whose choices of how much "green effort" to devote to building their reputations as socially responsible producers are determined in the contexts of simultaneous-move and hybrid simultaneous/sequential-move Bertrand equilibria. We derive conditions under which (1) the inter-temporal, green-effort reaction function of the firm with the less-aggressive green strategy is non-monotonic, (2) the level of green effort chosen by the firm with the more-aggressive green strategy increases when it views itself as the leader in a hybrid game rather than moving concurrently in a simultaneous-choice game, and (3) the establishment of a resale market by …

Challenges Facing Youth Entering The Labor Market, Martha Ross

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

As part of the Brookings Scholar Lecture Series, Brookings Mountain West invites you to a lecture titled "Challenges Facing Youth Entering the Labor Market" by Fellow in Metropolitan Policy, Martha Ross. Labor force participation and employment are declining among teens and young adults, suggesting that fewer young people are having the kinds of work experiences that prepare them for the world of full-time employment. Not everyone is equally affected, as there are marked differences by race/ethnicity, income, and education. This lecture will discuss employment trends among young people and the various strategies that cities and specific programs are using to …

Complexity And Efficiency In Conservation Auctions: Evidence From A Laboratory Experiment, Simanti Banerjee, Marc Conte Apr 2018

Complexity And Efficiency In Conservation Auctions: Evidence From A Laboratory Experiment, Simanti Banerjee, Marc Conte

Cornhusker Economics

Payment-for-ecosystem-services (PES) schemes financially compensate producers for implementing various conservation practices on their properties that generate ecosystem-service benefits for society. Conservation auctions have been adopted in several PES programs such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) (Hellerstein et al., 2015) and involve producers submitting bids for one or more environmental practices for consideration in the auction.

Household Debt, Consumption, And Income Inequality, Edmond Berisha, John Meszaros Apr 2018

Household Debt, Consumption, And Income Inequality, Edmond Berisha, John Meszaros

Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Using the Johansen and Engle–Granger cointegration tests, we show that there is one cointegrating relationship between household debt, consumption, and income inequality in the United States for the period from 1929 to 2009. Given this result, we use a Vector Error-Correction model to further understand the dynamics among the three variables. Results indicate that increases in income inequality and consumption directly contribute to increases in household debt. Interestingly, the results reveal some feedback from household debt to income inequality. We also show that debt-driven consumption should be viewed with caution as the results show that increases in household debt correspond …

Making The Grade: The Contribution Of Education Expenditure To Economic Growth, Neil Frank Apr 2018

Making The Grade: The Contribution Of Education Expenditure To Economic Growth, Neil Frank

Undergraduate Economic Review

Does education expenditure promote long-run economic growth? Empirical evidence is inconclusive. This paper addresses the question of how education expenditure influences economic growth using a long run growth accounting model analyzing 179 countries from 1970 to 2014. Overall, the results indicate that education expenditure does positively affect growth. However, when the sample is split into different criteria based on economic prosperity of the countries in question, the results change. In non-oil countries education expenditure increases economic growth, in developing countries education expenditure has a negative impact and in OECD countries the impact is non-significant.

Understanding The Racial/Ethnic Gap In Bank Account Ownership Among Older Adults, Luisa Blanco, Marco Angrisani, Emma Aguila, Mei Leng Apr 2018

Understanding The Racial/Ethnic Gap In Bank Account Ownership Among Older Adults, Luisa Blanco, Marco Angrisani, Emma Aguila, Mei Leng

School of Public Policy Working Papers

The observed racial/ethnic gap in bank account ownership among older adults is substantial. We investigate socio-economic, cognitive and cultural barriers underling it. As additional potential barriers are accounted for, the residual gaps in financial inclusion with respect to Whites is reduced by 19 percent for Blacks and 46 percent for Hispanics. We find that citizenship and “taste for privacy” play a limited role for both minority groups, while real asset ownership, health, cognitive ability and cultural hurdles contribute substantially to the gap. For Hispanics, language barriers explain most of the gap, while neighborhood-level socioeconomic characteristics are more salient for Blacks. …

Essays On Estimation For Nonlinear Spatial Models, Xiaoyu Zhou Apr 2018

Essays On Estimation For Nonlinear Spatial Models, Xiaoyu Zhou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three essays that contribute to the literature on the estimation of nonlinear spatial panel models. Chapter 2 investigates the performance of both the spatial autocorrelation probit model (SAR) and the spatial error correlation probit model (SEM) with the consideration of temporal effects under the panel data framework. The recursive importance sampling (RIS) method is adopted to compute the integral of the multivariate normal distributed error terms. Chapter 3 estimates a panel probit model with individual fixed effects. A spatial error process and conditional heteroskedasticity in an exponential form is considered. We derive the analytical solution for …

Social Exchange Theory: What Is It, And How Can It Be Applied To Everyday Situations?, Miriam Deauseault Apr 2018

Social Exchange Theory: What Is It, And How Can It Be Applied To Everyday Situations?, Miriam Deauseault

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

In all forms of relationships between people, the concept of ‘give and take’ is central. You spend time with a friend because you offer each other mutual support and have fun with them. You pay to take your significant other out on a date or buy them a nice gift because their affection and presence in your life makes you feel good. When these balances get shifted so one person is consistently taking more and the other is giving more, it tends to turn friendships, romantic relationships and other types of social bonds sour quickly. This is all common knowledge. …

The Y Can’T Do It All: Examining The Decline Of Participation In Youth Athletics, Ian Allen Apr 2018

The Y Can’T Do It All: Examining The Decline Of Participation In Youth Athletics, Ian Allen

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Nationally, since 2008, participation in youth sports (ages 6-17) has dropped significantly. The declining trend--from 45% down to 37%-- can be attributed to many factors

  • The rising cost associated with general participation in programs, especially at the middle and high school levels
  • Early specialization in one sport along with the introduction of hypercompetitiveness in younger age groups
  • The need for coaches to have much more training and certification to get a foot in the door at schools and recreation programs around the country.

These factors cause a significant divide between underprivileged and privileged youth, creating a situation of haves and …

A Closer Look At The Determinants Of International Migration: Decomposing Cultural Distance, Roger White Apr 2018

A Closer Look At The Determinants Of International Migration: Decomposing Cultural Distance, Roger White

Economics

Using a modified gravity model and three measures of cultural distance, we employ the zeroinflated negative binomial estimation technique to examine the impact of cultural distance on international migration flows. We confirm the finding of prior studies that there exists a negative relationship between composite measures of cultural distance and immigrant flows. Extending the literature, we decompose our composite cultural distance measures into their component dimensions to examine potential variability in the influences of individual dimensions on international migration. We find the cultural dimensions that reflect individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and perceived gender roles are typically more influential in determining immigrant …

What Factors Drive Individual Misperceptions Of The Returns To Schooling In Tanzania? Some Lessons For Education Policy, Plamen Nikolov, Nursat Jimi Apr 2018

What Factors Drive Individual Misperceptions Of The Returns To Schooling In Tanzania? Some Lessons For Education Policy, Plamen Nikolov, Nursat Jimi

Economics Faculty Scholarship

Evidence on educational returns and the factors that determine the demand for schooling in developing countries is extremely scarce. Building on previous studies that show individuals underestimating the returns to schooling, we use two surveys from Tanzania to estimate both the actual and perceived schooling returns and subsequently examine what factors drive individual misperceptions regarding actual returns. Using ordinary least squares and instrumental variable methods, we find that each additional year of schooling in Tanzania increases earnings, on average, by 9 to 11 percent. We find that on average individuals underestimate returns to schooling by 74 to 79 percent and …

An Analysis Of Retail Sales In Micropolitan Areas In The Year 2000, Brett Miller, Michael Davidsson

Paper Presentations

In this paper retail sales will be used to help understand the consumer spending habits of micropolitan areas in the year 2000. The year 2000 was a big year for American consumers, it was at the turn of the century, some said that the world was ending; others said it was just the begging of a new technological era. This paper will take a look at many factors that could have affected the retail sales (i.e. consumer spending) in micropolitan areas, as well as be able to help explain the consumer confidence in the year 2000. Areas such as population …

WCBT Undergraduate Publications

The United States economy has been through its fair share of struggles in recent years. Following the 2008 Financial Crisis, many people were uncertain of how it was going to impact the future of American business, policies, and individual states economic potential. After the election of President Donald Trump, it is evident that there has been a great amount of growth in the United States economy, and the growth that has been made can be reflected in multiple ways. Using the tools and knowledge we have obtained in our Economic and Financial Forecasting course at Sacred Heart University, we are …
