Crime And The Business Cycle In Mississippi, Taylor Thrasher

This thesis examines the relationship between crime and the business cycle in Mississippi. Working with a theoretical model of the individual's decision to commit a crime, I show that an increase in legal income decreases an individual's propensity to commit crime. I then use regressions to estimate the long-run and short-run income elasticities of violent crime, burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft. The long-run empirical model shows how income growth effects crime growth, and the short-run empirical model shows how income variability effects crime variability. The purpose of this thesis is to exam the causes behind unusually high youth unemployment in Spain, even after the 2007-8 financial crisis has subsided. The primary means of investigating these causes is through constructing a set of empirical models and then using these models to perform several time-series regressions to find whether changes in educational patterns, demographics, and immigration have had any concrete effect on the youth unemployment rate and social capital. The locational decisions of firms present a complex economic and political problem for State Legislatures across the United States of America. It is well known that individual states compete against one another, offering large packages of incentives to firms who open within their borders — a process popularly known as the race to the bottom. This thesis examines public subsidy information reported by the Mississippi Development Authority alongside wage and employment data from 1990 to 2016 in a local projection framework to examine whether or not treatment effects of local government spending are significant. Examining The Impact Of University Sports Success On Freshman Act Scores: An Empirical Analysis, Connor Yackels

My study presents a model in which incoming freshman ACT scores are a function of football, basketball, and baseball regular season and postseason success, using academic variables as controls. I contribute to the existing literature by including baseball in the analysis in addition to football and basketball, using ACT scores instead of SAT scores, using a unique and expanded set of variables to measure sports success, and more recent data. For the time period 2006-2014, I find weak evidence that supports the hypothesis that athletic success positively influences ACT scores.

Does The Asset Pricing Premium Reflect Asymmetric Or Incomplete Information?, Crocker H. Liu, Adam Nowak, Patrick S. Smith

We develop a framework for using text as data in asset pricing models. We use the framework to test whether real estate agents exploit their informational advantage to sell properties they own for a premium. Consistent with the previous literature, baseline estimates that exclude textual information indicate agents sell their own house at a 3 to 4 percent premium in both Phoenix, AZ and Atlanta, GA. However, this premium dissipates when textual information is included. The results suggest that the baseline estimates suffer from an omitted variable bias, which previous studies incorrectly ascribe to market distortions associated with asymmetric information.

Analysis of the benefits and the drawbacks of hosting large-scale sporting events like the Olympics or World Cup frequently ignore the effects of crime due to its relatively small economic impact in comparison to employment and consumption effects. Literature has frequently tied sporting events and tourism to crime, in addition to observing proximity effects on crime during sporting events. This research seeks to confirm both by implementing a difference-in-difference regression that can show whether crime increased during the Olympics, in particular in London boroughs which hosted venues for the Games. We propose kernel-based estimators for the components of a partially linear regression in a triangular system where endogenous regressors appear both in the linear and nonparametric components of the regression. Compared with other estimators currently available in the literature, e.g. the sieve estimators proposed in Ai and Chen (2003) or Otsu (2011), our estimators have explicit functional form and are much easier to implement. They rely on a set of assumptions introduced by Newey et al. (1999) that characterize what has become known as the “control function” approach for endogeneity in regression. Real estate sales significantly declined during and after the 2008 mortgage crisis. In the United States, real estate sales dropped 35% after the mortgage crisis. Guided by the attention, interest, desire, and action (AIDA) model, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies successful residential real estate organization managers use to mitigate sales decline in a postrecession environment. Three residential real estate organization managers in Southern Maryland and Northern Virginia participated in semistructured interviews. We explore whether a decline in tariffs after the passage of South Korea’s free trade agreements yields evidence more favorable to purchasing power parity between South Korea and its free trade partners. Our data include two aggregated measures of prices – the CPI and the PPI – as well as disaggregated CPI data for six selected, highly tradable items: food, alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic beverages, clothing, footwear and tobacco products. This paper is aimed at analyzing the contribution of E-commerce on the trading sector in China and estimating the macroeconomic and sectoral impact of E-commerce respectively by using fixed effect panel data based on the data from seven selected regions in China over the period of 2008-2016. This paper uses ex-post gravity analysis to examine whether Thailand's 12 effective free trade agreements cause trade creation or trade diversion effect. The sample of the study covers 43 countries over the period of 1991-2016. The model is specified with the aim to obtain unbiased estimates of three FTA dummy variables, representing trades within and outside the trade blocs. This study is able to analyze only 7 out of 12 total FTAs due to multicollinearity problem. Using daily indices for several East Asian and Asian emerging stock markets from 5 January 1995 to 31 December 2018, this study investigates the volatility comovement of the stock market returns in using the DCC-MGARCH model. The empirical results depict that the volatility comovement among East Asian stock markets have increased in recent years. Moreover, this correlation is stronger in the developed markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. This article, through the data of the Statistics Bureau of Thailand in 2007 and 2015, examines whether remittances brought about by economic migration will affect household expenditure patterns. This study includes three expenditure patterns: education expenditure, housing expenditure, food and beverage expenditure. The result shows remittances have no effect on housing expenditures. Families receiving remittances, the non-poor households pay more on education than the poor households. And poor households always have more expenditure on food and beverage than non-poor households.

การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและเปรียบเทียบผลกระทบของมาตรการกีดกันการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษีประเภทต่าง ๆ ต่อมูลค่าการส่งออกทูน่ากระป๋องของประเทศไทย โดยผ่านแบบจำลองแรงโน้มถ่วง (Gravity Model) โดยใช้ข้อมูลจาก 14 ประเทศคู่ค้าสำคัญของประเทศไทยแบบรายปี ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2006-2015 ซึ่งผลการศึกษาพบว่า มาตรการกีดกันการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษีที่นานาชาติใช่กับสินค้าทูน่ากระป๋อง (HS code: 160414) ไม่ส่งผลเสียกับมูลค่าการส่งออกทูน่ากระป๋องของประเทศไทย แต่กลับส่งผลทำให้มูลค่าการส่งออกทูน่ากระป๋องของไทยเพิ่มขึ้น ซึ่งขัดแย้งกับแนวคิดการใช้มาตรการกีดกันการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษี เนื่องจาก มาตรฐานสินค้าทูน่ากระป๋องของประเทศไทยสูงกว่าข้อกำหนด กฎเกณฑ์ต่าง ๆ ของมาตรการกีดกันการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษีที่นานาประเทศบังคับใช้กับประเทศไทย ทำให้ประเทศไทยไม่ได้รับผลกระทบในขณะที่ประเทศอื่น ๆ ประสบปัญหานี้ นอกจากนี้ มาตรการกีดกันการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษีที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อมูลค่าการส่งออกทูน่ากระป๋องมากที่สุดคือ มาตรการกีดกันการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษีประเภทจำกัดปริมาณ (Quantitative Restrictions :QR) เนื่องจาก มาตรการกีดกันทางการค้าที่มิใช่ภาษีประเภทจำกัดปริมาณที่สำคัญไม่ส่งผลต่อประเทศไทยแต่ส่งผลกับคู่แข่งของไทย คือ มาตรการห้ามนำเข้าทูน่ากระป๋องที่มีวัตถุดิบจากการทำประมงอวนล้อมของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ซึ่งได้รับการประสานงานแก้ไขโดยสมาคมอุตสาหกรรมทูน่ากระป๋องไทยเรียบร้อย แต่ประเทศผู้ส่งออกทูน่ากระป๋องประเทศอื่น ๆ ยังคงประสบปัญหานี้อยู่ ทำให้ในตลาดสหรัฐอเมริกามีทูน่ากระป๋องจากประเทศคู่แข่งของไทยน้อย จึงทำให้ทูน่ากระป๋องของไทยมีส่วนแบ่งตลาดที่มากขึ้นและมูลค่าการส่งออกทูน่ากระป๋องที่เพิ่มขึ้นอีกด้วย

แนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว: กรณีศึกษาจังหวัดน่าน, จิรภัทร สุคันธมาลา

การท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดน่านเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทางบวกอย่างมากในปัจจุบัน โดยจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยมีอัตราการเปลี่ยนแปลงเฉลี่ยระหว่างปี 2552-2560 สูงเป็นอันดับ 3 ของ 9 จังหวัดภาคเหนือ นอกจากนี้ จังหวัดน่านยังถูกเลือกให้เป็น 1 ใน 12 เมืองต้องห้ามพลาด โดยการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย จากศักยภาพของจังหวัดน่านข้างต้นนี้ จึงนำมาสู่วัตถุประสงค์หลักในการวิจัยที่ต้องการวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่มีผลกระทบต่อแนวโน้มในการกลับมาท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจในการชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว โดยการใช้แบบจำลองอรรถประโยชน์ ที่มีตัวแปรอิสระเป็นปัจจัยด้านความพึงพอใจ ปัจจัยเชิงพฤติกรรมการท่องเที่ยวในอดีต และคุณลักษณะส่วนตัวของนักท่องเที่ยว ขณะที่ตัวแปรตามคือแนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว โดยใช้ข้อมูลปฐมภูมิจากการเก็บแบบสอบถาม ซึ่งมีกลุ่มตัวอย่างนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งหมด 302 คน ผลการศึกษาที่ได้ พบว่า ปัจจัยด้านความพึงพอใจในแหล่งท่องเที่ยวส่งผลอย่างมีนัยสำคัญต่อแนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว ขณะเดียวกัน ความพึงพอใจในปัจจัยด้านที่พักส่งผลเชิงบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญต่อแนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ อีกทั้ง ความพึงพอใจในสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกของการท่องเที่ยวยังส่งผลเชิงบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญต่อความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว นอกจากนี้ นักท่องเที่ยวที่มีพฤติกรรมชอบท่องเที่ยวภูเขาในอดีต มีความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยวลดลงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ในทางตรงกันข้าม นักท่องเที่ยวที่พิจารณาอุณหภูมิของสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวก่อนเดินทางอยู่บ่อยครั้ง มีความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยวเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ

งานวิจัยฉบับนี้ศึกษาวิวัฒนาการทางการเงินของอินเทอร์เน็ตแบงกิ้งและโมบายแบงกิ้งในประเทศไทยและศึกษาผลกระทบของธนาคารพาณิชย์ที่เปิดให้บริการอินเทอร์เน็ตแบงกิ้ง และโมบายแบงกิ้งต่อผลการดำเนินงานของธนาคารประกอบด้วยความสามารถในการทำกำไรและ Tobin's q โดยปัจจัยที่นำมาศึกษา ได้แก่ ดิจิตอลแบงกิ้ง ขนาดสินทรัพย์ ขนาดกับเทคโนโลยี อัตราส่วนความเป็นเจ้าของ อัตราส่วนเงินฝากต่อสินทรัพย์ อัตราส่วนเงินให้กู้ต่อสินทรัพย์ จำนวนผู้ใช้งานโมบายแบงกิ้ง ผลิตภัณฑ์มวลรวมในประเทศ อัตราเงินเฟ้อ และอัตราส่วนราคาหุ้นต่อกำไรสุทธิ จากปัจจัยดังกล่าวนำมาสร้างสมการถดถอยเชิงซ้อน โดยทดสอบวิธี Fixed effect แบบ Cluster test ระยะเวลาในการศึกษาตั้งแต่ไตรมาสที่ 2 ปีพ.ศ.2543 ถึงไตรมาสที่ 2 ปีพ.ศ. 2561 จำนวนธนาคารพาณิชย์ทั้งหมด 11 แห่งที่จดทะเบียนในตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย
ผลการศึกษาพบว่าการเปิดให้บริการอินเทอร์เน็ตแบงกิ้งส่งผลต่ออัตราส่วนผลตอบแทนต่อส่วนของทุน (ROE) ลดลงร้อยละ 0.25 เช่นเดียวกับผลการทดสอบของการเปิดให้บริการโมบายแบงกิ้งส่งผลต่ออัตราส่วนต่างรายได้ดอกเบี้ยสุทธิ (NIM) ลดลงร้อยละ 0.1 นอกจากนี้ผลการศึกษาของขนาดสินทรัพย์และจำนวนผู้ใช้โมบายแบงกิ้งพบว่ามีความสัมพันธ์ในทิศทางตรงกันข้ามกับผลการดำเนินงานที่ระดับนัยสำคัญ

ภัยพิบัติทางธรรมชาติสร้างความเสียหายต่อผลผลิตของเกษตรกรเฉลี่ย 7,253 ล้าน/ปี ทำให้ภาครัฐต้องช่วยเหลือเกษตรกรในการบริหารความเสี่ยงโดยใช้การประกันภัยพืชผล แต่ระบบประกันภัยพืชผลยังประสบกับปัญหาบริบทของเกษตรกรในแต่ละพื้นที่ที่มีความแตกต่างกัน ความไม่สมมาตรของข้อมูลอาจเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญของปัญหา การศึกษานี้จึงให้ความสำคัญกับปัญหาความไม่สมมาตรของข้อมูลที่เกิดในโครงการประกันภัยพืชผลของเกษตรกรในพื้นที่ความเสี่ยงที่แตกต่างกัน โดยเก็บข้อมูลจากกลุ่มตัวอย่างเกษตรกรผู้เพาะปลูกข้าว 379 ครัวเรือน เพื่อนำมาวิเคราะห์ Adverse Selection และ Moral Hazard โดยใช้แบบจำลอง Ordered Logit และการหาค่าคาดหมายของผลตอบแทน อีกทั้งทำการวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลในการเข้าร่วมโครงการประกันภัยพืชผล โดยใช้แบบจำลอง Binary Logit ผลการศึกษาชี้ให้เห็นว่าปัจจัยที่ส่งผลในการเข้าร่วมโครงการฯ คือ การอุดหนุนค่าเบี้ยจากภาครัฐและประสบการณ์ในการเผชิญภัยพิบัติที่มากขึ้น และพบการเกิด Adverse Selection ในระดับพื้นที่ โดยพื้นที่ความเสี่ยงสูงมีการกระจุกของพื้นที่เอาประกันมากกว่าพื้นที่ความเสี่ยงต่ำ ทำให้ค่าคาดหมายของผลตอบแทนในการดำเนินโครงการฯ ขาดทุน สำหรับการเกิด Moral Hazard พบว่า เกษตรกรในพื้นที่ความเสี่ยงระดับสูงเห็นช่องโหว่ในการตรวจสอบความเสียหายทำให้เกิดความเสี่ยงต่อการชดเชยที่เพิ่มขึ้น สำหรับพื้นที่ความเสี่ยงระดับกลาง พบว่าเกิดจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงต้นทุนในการใช้สารเคมี แต่ในพื้นที่ความเสี่ยงระดับต่ำ ไม่พบการเกิด Moral Hazard จะเห็นได้ว่า หลักเกณฑ์ของโครงการนำสู่การเกิดความไม่สมมาตรของข้อมูล ดังนั้นการกำหนดหลักเกณฑ์ที่เหมาะสมกับบริบทของเกษตรกรในแต่ละพื้นที่จึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญเพื่อลดปัญหาดังกล่าว
