Determinants Of Tipping Behavior: Evidence From Us Restaurants, Nusrat Jahan
Determinants Of Tipping Behavior: Evidence From Us Restaurants, Nusrat Jahan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to analyze people’s tipping behavior to assess the factors that determine both the likelihood of leaving a tip and tip size in US restaurants. A total 2,334 away from home eating events are considered in this study based on the nationally representative National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS) dataset. Two different tipping scenarios are considered for full-service restaurants to examine differences in customers’ behavior under two different situations. Considering that households’ tipping decisions and tip sizes are functions of the demand for personal interest (D"#, ) and the demand for social interest (D), different socio-demographic, …

Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting Of Confederate Currency And The Impact It Had On Inflation, Raymond Rector
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis, "Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting of Confederate Currency and The Impact It Had On Inflation" takes an in depth look at the history of counterfeiting the currency of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War by entrepreneurs who saw the introduction of a new currency as an opportunity to profit. The thesis begins by providing background information on several major counterfeiters and their actions before and during the Civil War, as well as other sources of counterfeit bills not normally considered by scholars. The thesis also looks at the effects that this illegitimate increase in the money supply …

The Future Encyclopedia Of Luddism, Miriam A. Cherry
The Future Encyclopedia Of Luddism, Miriam A. Cherry
All Faculty Scholarship
In common parlance, the term “Luddite” means someone who is anti-technology, or maybe, just not adept at using technology. Historically, however, the Luddite movement was a reaction born of industrial accidents and dangerous machines, poor working conditions, and the fact that there were no unions to represent worker interests during England’s initial period of industrialization. The Luddites did not hate technology; they only channeled their anger toward machine-breaking because it had nowhere else to go. The attached book chapter is an alternate history (written circa 2500) that depends on the critical assumption that the Luddites succeeded in their industrial campaign …

Essays On Merger And Innovation, Gusang Kang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation focuses mainly on drivers of merger partner choice and effects on post-merger outcomes. In the first chapter, we examine the role of technology and product market similarities in value creation in mergers. Estimating a structural model of two-sided matching between acquirers and targets with transferable utility, we find that mergers between firms with similar technologies and product markets create values. In other words, firms prefer to choose other firms with similar technologies and product markets as their merger partner. We also find that mergers between firms with similar technologies create value through the channel of increasing innovation quantity …
Economics Of R&D Specialization In The Semiconductor Industry, Kyun Kim
Economics Of R&D Specialization In The Semiconductor Industry, Kyun Kim
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Starting in the 1970s, specialized suppliers have entered the semiconductor industry to supply capital equipment, or tools, used in semiconductor manufacturing to downstream semiconductor companies. After the entry of these external suppliers, semiconductor chip producers began to rely in varying degrees on them for the R&D to improve the quality of capital equipment, while they themselves began to focus on design and production of chips. In my dissertation, I conduct an empirical and theoretical investigation to support my hypothesis that the difference in R&D incentives between the upstream suppliers and downstream chip manufacturers was the important reason for the emergence …
Essays On Female Labor Supply And Fertility, Minhee Kim
Essays On Female Labor Supply And Fertility, Minhee Kim
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis focuses mainly on labor supply and fertility of married women. In the first chapter, I assess how the wage penalties of the labor market absences of married women have changed between the 1970s and the 1990s. The empirical results show that the wage penalties experienced by married women have risen over the two periods. I account for why the penalty has risen over the two decades. A possible reason for greater penalties is a larger difference in occupation between those who had career interruptions and those who worked continuously.

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation consists of three essays on public program evaluation in health economics. This dissertation explores the estimation of treatment effects of public programs on risky behaviors, health insurance status, labor market outcomes or other health-related outcomes among adolescents or young adults and addresses causality inferences based on empirical modeling, analysis and applications. The first chapter in this dissertation identifies the causal treatment effects of keg registration laws on underage alcohol consumption and related outcomes: alcohol-related traffic fatalities, by exploiting the substantial variations in the timing of the introduction of these laws across different states at different times. Using the …
Asymmetric Loss, Informatics And Forecast Uncertainty, Wuwei Wang
Asymmetric Loss, Informatics And Forecast Uncertainty, Wuwei Wang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In this thesis I estimate the asymmetry of forecasters’ loss functions and uncertainty of forecasts. Continuous distributions are fitted into histogram density forecasts. Of the two candidates of distributions used for the fitting process, generalized beta / triangular distribution is preferred to the normal distribution for its better fit and flexibility in accommodating excess skewness. Time varying loss function asymmetry is obtained by combining the fitted density distribution and the point forecasts of the same forecaster. Utilizing generalized beta distribution and triangular distribution, I find that forecasters tend to provide more favorable forecasts in their point forecasts than in their …
Lowering Consumer Search Costs Can Lead To Higher Prices, M. Nishida, Marc Remer
Lowering Consumer Search Costs Can Lead To Higher Prices, M. Nishida, Marc Remer
Economics Faculty Works
We demonstrate that regulations that lower consumer search costs and make them less heterogeneous across consumers can lead to higher prices charged by firms. We estimate the distribution of consumer search costs for 366 isolated retail gasoline markets, and find that reducing the mean and standard deviation by 20% and 48%, respectively, leads to price increases in 32% of markets and an average price increase of 5.2 cents per gallon across all markets. Thus, price transparency regulation that results in higher prices may not stem from collusion, but from an equilibrium with less consumer search.

The Value Of Green Certification On Single-Family Houses In The Chicagoland Area, Raymond Bolton
The Value Of Green Certification On Single-Family Houses In The Chicagoland Area, Raymond Bolton
Honors Projects
In the United States, residential buildings alone account for 33% of energy consumption. Rising concerns about environmental impacts due to human consumption, as well as health concerns related to pollution have caused a higher demand for environmentally conscious houses. Homebuilders have responded by providing green certifications for houses, attesting to a building’s efficiency in various aspects, such as site design and energy and water consumption. Using Multiple Listing Services real estate data on zero- to five-year-old houses sold between 2010 and 2017 in the Chicagoland area, this study examines whether there is a price premium associated with qualifying for green …

The Effect Of Oil Crises On Economies Of Comecon/Cmea Member Countries, A Five-Country Study: Cssr, Gdr, Hungary, Poland, And Ussr, Cosku Mihci
Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
Economic problems in COMECON/CMEA member countries started to grow in the second half of the 1970s, which lead to radical economic and political reforms in the second half of the 1980s and resulted in demise of the economic and political system in these countries. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate whether growing economic problems in East European planned economies, or in CMEA member countries, were initially triggered by oil crises, through international trade and level of indebtedness channels, or not. Countries examined in this thesis were the CSSR, the GDR, Hungary, Poland, and the USSR; the time …

The Trade-Security Nexus And U.S. Policy Making In Critical Minerals, Yujia He
Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce Faculty Publications
The United States increasingly relies on import to meet its demand for critical minerals. Using the case of rare earth elements (REEs), this paper analyzes the conditions and the strategies for the U.S. government to address import dependence. The paper finds that market factors, including the lack of comparable and sufficient substitutes and recycling, the high ratio of import relative to consumption, the high concentration of import supply by country, and regulations from the major supplier country, were insufficient to prompt intervention. Significant policy action only occurs when changing circumstances turn import dependence into perceived national security threats to the …

Adoption Of Conservation Practices And Precision Technologies In South Dakota: An Empirical Analysis, Allen P. Deutz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Advances in conservation agriculture and precision agriculture technology practices have contributed to the adoption of conservation practices that reduce externalities from agricultural production, but this conversion was usually coupled with economic incentive, whether from increases in fertility and yield, or payments for on farm retirement or restoration practices. This study expands on this theme, evaluating the connection between conservation and the increased use of various precision agriculture technologies. The study uses survey data collected from South Dakota farmers and ranchers, with responses from 28 counties and over 500,000 acres of crop, pasture, and range land to address the following three …

Demands And Offers In Ultimatum Games, Jeremiah Wills
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pecorino and Van Boening (2010) introduce the embedded ultimatum game. The authors embed an ultimatum game into a stylized legal bargaining framework and cross analyze the offer and dispute behavior in this game with the same behavior in a baseline simple ultimatum game. The current study seeks to test the replicability of a computerized version of these games. Additionally, variations of the two games are introduced here to test the effects of specific manipulation of the framing of the simple ultimatum game, as well as to test the effects of specific manipulation of the offer structure in both the simple …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The insurance industry manages a large amount of financial assets. In recent years, a growing number of investment companies are providing insurance asset management solutions, and the use of external asset management by the insurance industry is increasing over time. Therefore, understanding insurance asset management is important for academics and practitioners in both insurance and general finance. In the first essay, we investigate industrial portfolio tilt (referred to as “industry bias”) in the U.S. property liability insurers’ comstock portfolios. We find that U.S. property-liability insurers exhibit a negative industry bias by tilting their portfolios away from their own industry. We …

The Real Winner Of The Second World War: Patriotic Consumption And The Formation Of A Society Of Spin, Jordan T. Thomas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The unique circumstances in the United States during the Second World War allowed for business to continue as usual on the home front. Advertisers, public relations experts, and big business all worked for the government to promote the war effort. For a period of time major companies in the United States were producing advertisements that persuaded citizens to support rationing, buy war bonds, hate the enemy, and keep their brand names in mind in the post-war years. Companies who supported the war effort had their brands connected with ideas of patriotism and enjoyed the success of brand loyal consumers in …
