The three-factor Nelson-Siegel model is a widely used model for forecasting the term structure of interest rates. Several extensions have recently been proposed. Even for the original model, different methods of treating the parameters have been shown. Ultimately, what works best depends on the data used to estimate the parameters. In this paper, the original three-factor model with fixed shape parameter was applied to forecast the term structure using market data from the Philippines. Carocok Painan is one of the potential areas for coastal tourism in Pesisir Selatan Regency. The area has beautiful beaches, coastal resources and historical sites that attract tourists. This study aims to estimate the supply and demand for coastal tourism in Carocok Painan. The supply conditions based on water quality analysis, suitability area, and carrying capacity show that the Carocok Painan is suitable for coastal tourism. The analysis of demand shows that the economic value of Carocok Painan for tourists using the travel cost method is Rp41,521,536,000 per year, while the economic value for residents using contingent valuation method is …

Motivated by the literature on random choice and in particular the random utility models, we extend the analysis in Bossert and Sprumont (2013) to include the possibility that players exhibit stochastic preferences over alternatives. We prove that every random choice rule is backwards-induction rationalizable.

The paper studies with an endogenous growth model how the merger and acquisition (M&A) affects the aggregate growth rate. We model the M&A as a capital reallocation process, which can increase both productivity and growth rates of firms. The model is tractable and greatly consistent with patterns observed in the M&A at the micro level. Matching our model to the data, we find that prohibiting the M&A would lead to the reduction of the aggregate growth rate of US economy by 0.1% and the reduction of the aggregate TFP by 5%.

Spatial statistical analyses are often used to study the link between environmental factors and the incidence of diseases. In modelling spatial data, the existence of spatial correlation between observations must be considered. However, in many situations, the exact form of the spatial correlation is unknown. This paper studies environmental factors that might influence the incidence of malaria in Afghanistan. We assume that spatial correlation may be induced by multiple latent sources. Our method is based on a generalized estimating equation of the marginal mean of disease incidence, as a function of the geographical factors and the spatial correlation. Instead of …

The desire of risk-averse households to hedge rent risk is thought to increase home ownership and prices. While evidence for the ownership implication is compelling, support for the price effect is mixed. We show that an important reason is search frictions. Rent risk reduces outside options, leading to less-picky buyers and worse home/buyer matches. This attenuates the rise in the price-to-rent ratio that would otherwise occur without frictions. Consistent with our model, a house remains on the market for fewer days when rent risk is higher. Accounting for frictions significantly increases the effect of rent risk on home prices.

Forecasting Stock Returns In Good And Bad Times: The Role Of Market States, Dashan Huang, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou

This paper proposes a two-state predictive regression model and shows that stock market 12-month return (TMR), the time-series momentum predictor of Moskowitz, Ooi, and Pedersen (2012), forecasts the aggregate stock market negatively in good times and positively in bad times. The out-of-sample R-squares are 0.96% and 1.72% in good and bad times, or 1.28% and 1.41% in NBER economic expansions and recessions, respectively. The TMR predictability pattern holds in the cross-section of U.S. stocks and the international markets. Our study shows that the absence of return predictability in good times, an important finding of recent studies, is largely driven by …

Fertility And Rural Electrification In Bangladesh, Tomoki Fujii, Abu S. Shonchoy

We use a household-level panel dataset from Bangladesh to examine the household-level relationship between fertility and the access to electricity. We find that the household's access to electricity reduces the change in the number of children by about 0.1 to 0.25 children in a period of five years in most estimates. This finding also applies to retrospective panel data and is robust to the choice of covariates and estimation methods. Our finding passes falsification test and corroborates with the predictions of our theoretical model on the households' time use and consumption pattern.

In 2010–2014, Semarang was involved as the big three city with high incidence rate of dengue in Central Java province. This study aimed to analyze the financing by the local government for Dengue preventive program in 2013-2015, as well as the resources gap. The health account approach was used to analyze spending by source, function, and provider. Total local government spending for dengue in 2013 were IDR 4.018.927.020,- increased by 101% in 2014 and increased by 218% in 2015. Based on PMK No. 69 in 2013, capitation is set at the same tariff for all age groups and only distinguished for each primary health care. Capitation is not adjusted by individual risk. This study aimed to calculate the capitation by age, using cross sectional design. The result of this study was capitation by age groups at the primary health care level. It was indicated that there was different capitation between age groups, with higher capitation observed in the age group of 0-4 and ≥50 years old and declining in productive age.

Since the implementationof National Health Insurance (JKN), Health Centers received the payment from Social Security Agency for Health (BPJS) using capitation. In Lubuklinggau City, there has been problem inutilizing capitation and financing surplus (SiLPA) for approximately 23% per year. This research aimed to analyze the utilization of capitationin Lubuklinggau City 2014-2016. This qualitative study was implemented in SimpangPeriuk Health Center, Taba, Citra Medika and Swasti Saba which werethe lowest and highest SiLPA absorption, and data were collected retrospectively. Short-time compensation (STC) is an optional program within some state unemployment insurance (UI) systems that allows employers experiencing a temporary reduction in business to lower the average hours of employees in lieu of laying them off. Employer use of the STC option has been low in states with STC programs. We conducted demonstrations in Iowa and Oregon to evaluate the effectiveness of several interventions designed to increase employer awareness and use of STC, including disseminating information about STC to specific employers (members of the “treatment” group) over a 12-month period. When state and local governments engage in balanced budget changes in taxes and spending, what fiscal multiplier effects do such policies have on creating local jobs? Traditionally, the view has been that possible job-creation effects of such state and local “demand-side” policies are smaller, second-order effects.
