We estimate the role that law enforcement officer experience has on the probability of punishment, using a unique data set of tickets issued by the Idaho State Police linked to human resource records. All else equal, officers issue fewer tickets earlier in their career than later in their career. Quasi-exogenous shocks to an officer’s task-specific experience, generated by law changes, cause a temporary reduction in the frequency with which a subset of troopers “use” those laws, creating disparities in the likelihood that individual citizens are cited for law violations. Few studies have simultaneously evaluated delay discounting and behavioral economic demand to determine their unique contribution to drug use. A recent study in cannabis users found that monetary delay discounting uniquely predicted cannabis dependence symptoms, whereas cannabis demand uniquely predicted use frequency. This study sought to replicate and extend this research by evaluating delay discounting and behavioral economic demand measures for multiple commodities and including a use quantity measure. Background: An increasing number of family service agencies and community-based mental health service providers are implementing a single-session walk-in counselling (SSWIC) as an alternative to traditional counselling. However, few economic evaluations have been undertaken.

Aims: To conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis of two models of service delivery, SSWIC compared to being waitlisted for traditional counselling.

Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed. Data were collected from two community-based Family Service Agencies, one using SSWIC and one using traditional counselling. The present study has two objectives. The first is a review of studies that estimate the global economic impacts of climate change using a systematic research synthesis (SRS). In this review, we attempt to replicate the impact estimates provided by Tol (2009, 2014) and find a large number of errors and estimates that could not be replicated. The study provides revised estimates for a total of 36 usable estimates from 27 studies. A second part of the study performs a statistical analysis. While the different specifications provide alternative estimates of the damage function, there were no large discrepancies among specifications. …

An adequate description of economic dynamics requires the introduction of a monetary system including default penalties and expectations in a society whose economy utilizes money and credit. This essay notes and discusses several of the factors involved in the use of money and credit in a process oriented economy. This paper argues that intercollegiate athletics is at a turning point. The status quo is not stable and change is coming. This change can move college sports further toward commercialization and quasi-professionalism or it can endeavor to reinforce the historical vision of college sports as an amateur activity subordinated to the educational mission of U.S. colleges. The former path will lead to increasing academic scandals, widespread financial insolvency and diminishing support for Olympic sports and Title IX. The latter path, while not without its own challenges, may succeed in restoring a proper balance between athletics and academics.

This study aims to determine the phenomenon of flypaper effect of regionally spending in Sulawesi. Types of data use secondary data about regionally original income, general allocation fund, special allocation fund, tax-sharing fund, and regionally spending in 2016–2017. Data analysis using panel data regression analysis. Result of research, found flypaper effect of regional spending from special allocation fund, whereas from general allocation fund and tax-sharing fund is not found. This study also proves that regionally spending, general allocation fund, special allocation fund, and tax-sharing fund have a significant influence on regionally spending in Sulawesi.

Labor Unions And Occupational Safety: Event-Study Analysis Using Union Elections, Ling Li, Shawn Rohlin, Perry Singleton

This study examines the dynamic relationship between union elections and occupational safety among manufacturing establishments. Data on union elections come from the National Labor Relations Board, and data on workplace inspections and accident case rates come from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The results indicate that union elections improved occupational safety. First, workplace inspections trended upwards before the election, then decreased immediately after the election, due almost entirely to employee complaints. Second, accident case rates were relatively stable before the election, then trended downwards after the election, due to accidents involving days away from work, job restrictions, and job …

This study shows how the application of forecast combination improves the accuracy of forecasts of economic variables. Using data from January 2009 to December 2014 on the Nigerian inflation rate, and forecasts of currency in circulation (see Ikoku, (2014)) as examples, we find that by combining forecasts of both variables using the regressionbased method, the mean absolute percent errors of the combined forecasts were lower than the forecast errors from the individual models of the variables.

The present study seeks to examine empirically whether exposure to international trade creates or destroys jobs for a sample of eight ASEAN+3 countries (APT). The findings of the PMG technique shows that trade liberalization policies have a negative influence on unemployment rate in the long run. Since medium and unskilled workers are the majority of the workforce, a reduction in trade barriers is likely to expand the trading sector. Abstract This article analyzes the effects of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (Obama Tax Increase) and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (Bush Tax Cut) on corporate payout decision and stock returns. Logit and fixed-effect panel data analyses are conducted on all firms listed in NYSE, Amex and NASDAQ in the announcement windows of two, three and four quarters before and after the tax reforms. The results show that the implementation of these tax reforms more persistently affects dividend payments than stock repurchases. It also has a boosting effect on stock returns in the …

This study examines the World Trade Organization (WTO) to test how, if at all, its Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) serves the needs of its members. More specifically, it probes why countries would join the institution, but do not use it if a trade dispute arises. To test this expectation, the study hypothesizes that exorbitant dispute settlement costs can inhibit litigation. This occurs, however, across all dyads and not just when developing and developed countries litigate.

We investigate which factors affect the gender gap in entrepreneurship using evidence from CBMS Argentina and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition for nonlinear models. The dataset allows us to construct a series of personality variables (risk aversion, social aversion, outgoing attitude, flexibility desire, and effort aversion) which are usually missing in standard household surveys. In addition, we can measure current entrepreneurial activity as well as failure from the past. Understanding the contributions of brand and marketing activities to sales is vital to make smart decisions. This study attempts to investigate this issue empirically. Data were gathered from two brands in frequently purchase packaged goods category. Two double-log regression models were fitted to data. We find that brand and marketing activities contribute to sales significantly. Managers may find our findings useful to allocate fund between short-term and long-term marketing actions. As far as our knowledge is concerned, this constitutes the first empirical work of economics of branding for regional brands in India.
