Testing For Monotonicity In Unobservables Under Unconfoundedness, Stefan Hoderlein, Liangjun Su, Halbert White, Thomas Tao Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
Monotonicity in a scalar unobservable is a common assumption when modeling heterogeneity in structural models. Among other things, it allows one to recover the underlying structural function from certain conditional quantiles of observables. Nevertheless, monotonicity is a strong assumption and in some economic applications unlikely to hold, e.g., random coefficient models. Its failure can have substantive adverse consequences, in particular inconsistency of any estimator that is based on it. Having a test for this hypothesis is hence desirable. This paper provides such a test for cross-section data. We show how to exploit an exclusion restriction together With a conditional independence …

Lead Lag Relationship And Directional Asymmetry In Stock Returns Of Small And Large Portfolios: Evidence From The Karachi Stock Exchange, Ajid Ur Rehman, Ataullah Shah
Business Review
We explore whether systematic lead-lag relationships exist among the returns of small and large portfolios and whether such portfolios show symmetrical responses to good and bad news. Regression analysis conducted on sample small and large portfolios selected from listings at the Karachi Stock Exchange shows that small stocks follow large stocks quickly in bear-market conditions but slowly in bull-market conditions. This implies that positive information is absorbed more slowly in the prices of smaller stocks than in that of larger stocks.
Double Asymptotics For Explosive Continuous Time Models, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu
Double Asymptotics For Explosive Continuous Time Models, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper establishes a double asymptotic theory for explosive continuous time Levy-driven processes and the corresponding exact discrete time models. The double asymptotic theory assumes the sample size diverges because the sampling interval (h) shrinks to zero and the time span (N) diverges. Both the simultaneous and sequential double asymptotic distributions are derived. In contrast to the long-time span asymptotics (N -> infinity with fixed h) where no invariance principle applies, the double asymptotic distribution is derived without assuming Gaussian errors, so an invariance principle applies, as the asymptotic theory for the mildly explosive process developed by Phillips and Magdalinos …
Extension Of The Gravity Model: A Risk Integrated Approach Towards The Impact Analysis Of Mega Sports Events On Inbound Tourist Arrivals, Abdul Sami Stanekzai
Extension Of The Gravity Model: A Risk Integrated Approach Towards The Impact Analysis Of Mega Sports Events On Inbound Tourist Arrivals, Abdul Sami Stanekzai
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Mega sports events such as the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup are highly attended and countries compete ferociously to host such events due to their perceived long term positive effects. Inbound tourist forecasting is an important aspect of the hosting decision both for the organizing committees and the hosting nations. As a precaution against letting the event fall into incapable hands, which can lead into chaos and mismanagement, measures needs to be taken. Capacity evaluation of interested parties is possible, only by knowing the number of people who may attend the event. However, due to the infrequent occurrence of …
Analysis Off Dependent Discrete Choices Using Gaussian Copula, Arjun Poddar
Analysis Off Dependent Discrete Choices Using Gaussian Copula, Arjun Poddar
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
A popular tool for analyzing product choices of consumers is the well-known conditional logit discrete choice model. Originally publicized by McFadden (1974), this model assumes that the random components of the underlying latent utility functions of the consumers follow independent Gumbel distributions. However, in practice the independence assumption may be violated and a more reasonable model should account for the dependence of the utilities. In this dissertation we use the Gaussian copula with compound symmetric and autoregressive of order one correlation matrices to construct a general multivariate model for the joint distribution of the utilities. The induced correlations on the …

Financial Soundness Indicators And Macroeconomic Variables: An Empirical Investigation Of The Dynamic Linkages, Baba N. Yaaba
Financial Soundness Indicators And Macroeconomic Variables: An Empirical Investigation Of The Dynamic Linkages, Baba N. Yaaba
Bullion
The Financial soundness indicators compiled for Nigeria within the context of IMFs Financial Sector Assessment Programme has been proven to be capable of pre-empting financial crisis. Analysts, however, considered it imperative to further explore the characteristics of the indicators, particularly their relationship with other macroeconomic variables to enhance the understanding of its dynamics so as to improve on its usefulness. This study, as a maiden attempt, applies Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to investigate the dynamic linkages between the indicators and selected macroeconomic variables covering the period 2007 Q1 to 2015 Q4. The results indicate that macroeconomic events dictate the …
Application Of Decision Analytic Model In Health Economic Evaluation: Smoking Cessation Cases, Septiara Putri
Application Of Decision Analytic Model In Health Economic Evaluation: Smoking Cessation Cases, Septiara Putri
Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
Health economic evaluation that encompasses decision analytic model is a beneficial approach for assisting decision maker to choose the best health intervention for patients. Decision analytic model has been increasingly applied in health economic evaluation. This mathematical approach is mostly used for conducting cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions. Decision tree and Markov model has been widely applied in the past 20 years. Decision tree is the simplest form of decision model that drawn by the series of branches and clear pathways. Meanwhile, Markov model is one of the powerful approaches that employ stochastic process in health economic evaluation. This paper describes …

Terapi Sistemik Defisit Jkn: Bahan Refleksi Bagi Semua Pihak, Budi Hidayat
Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
The deficit deserves to be considered a chronic JKN disease. Indications of the deficit are revealed from the claims ratio figures. In 2014 and 2015, the claims ratio was consistently above 100%. This figure results from dividing claim costs (or participant health costs) by contribution income. Thus, the claims ratio describes the absorption of contribution funds for health costs only. However, contribution income must also be allocated for operational expenses and reserves. The JKN deficit will continue to grow if systemic therapy is nil. For 2016, the author's estimation results by referring to the assumed contribution amounts by Presidential Regulation …

It has become a common issue that the Global Fund (GF) as one of the largest international donors to AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Program will immediately stop the funding. Data shows that in 2009 GF ATM support reached 88,8% while APBN funding just cover 11,2% of the total budget needed. However, APBN budget for ATM programs was significantly increased in 2012 which covered almost 30% of the total budget. Eventhough the increasing trend of ATM budget seemed at the central government level, how ever the local governments will hold the key to the sustainability of the post- termination GF ATM …
Essays On The Economics Of International Remittances And Migration, Marian Manic
Essays On The Economics Of International Remittances And Migration, Marian Manic
Theses and Dissertations
Existing literature on international remittances recognizes the increasing importance of these transfers on economic development as well as their effect on the reduction of poverty in developing countries. However, the studies on this topic are still divided over the long-term effects of remittances, identifying instances when remittances have either positive or negative results. Probably the most important oversight of the literature on international remittances and migration is the lack of the regional dimension in the analysis, which is the focus of this dissertation.
In the first chapter I propose a novel spatial dataset of remittances and spending from a nationally …

Indonesia has the highest prevalence of smokers with 67% of adult males were smokers. Smoking prevalence among all adults increased sharply from 27% in 1995 to 36.3% in 2013. High consumption of cigarettes has been correlated with low price and excise of cigarettes. Experiences from other countries showed that one of the most effective way to reduce cigarette consumption is by increasing cigarette price and excise. Burden of tobacco related diseases has increased. The health burden will increase claims of JKN or Universal Health Coverage which currently has claim ratio of 115% and the quality of care remain low. The …

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition that is increasing in incidence in Indonesia, consuming a lot of National Health Insurance (JKN) public funds. In the JKN program, hemodialysis (HD) for treating CKD is guaranteed but requires a balance between costs and outcomes. Since 2014, BPJS has covered almost all HD costs in Indonesia with different Casemix Base Group (CBG) rates according to hospital class.

Intertemporal Poverty Among Older Americans, Gulgun Bayaz-Ozturk, Sean Macdonald
Publications and Research
This study uses aggregate intertemporal poverty indices proposed by Gradin, Del Rio, and Canto (2012) to measure poverty among older American households of different races from 2001 through 2009 employing data from the Health and Retirement Study. The findings indicate that the incidence of intertemporal poverty is higher among Black and Hispanic households and that it is also more intense and of longer duration. In our investigation of antipoverty effects of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, we find that the program has a significant impact in reducing intensity and inequality of poverty among poor populations. However, it does not significantly …
The Climax Of Long-Run Economic Growth, Paul Kim
The Climax Of Long-Run Economic Growth, Paul Kim
Economics Papers and Presentations
Economic Growth is the most popular topic today in economics. Particularly, the most wanted question is; why long run economic growth rare is declining? But at the same time, it is the most confusing subject in economics today and that could be one of the reason why it is most wanted subject' for the following two reasons: (1) the lack of clear identification of meaning of the declining growth rate; (2) the lack of new economic theory to assess a new problem when we say, "declining economic growth rate." In reference to (2), we are facing a new issue and …

This paper explores the ageing attitudes and long-term care planning behavior of adult Hispanics in New London, Connecticut, a town with 30 thousand inhabitants that is rapidly ageing. We conducted six focus groups and had 37 participants share their ageing perceptions and long-term care needs. Our main findings suggest that informal care arrangements are vulnerable and unsustainable especially since women have historically and disproportionately provided most family eldercare even at their own personal and financial expense. Though male participants expected their female relatives to care for them when they age and need personal assistance, female participants did not necessarily expect …

Exploring The Impact Of Information And Communication Technology (Ict) On Intermediation Market Structure In The Microfinance Industry, Frederick Riggins, David Weber
The African Journal of Information Systems
The microfinance industry provides financial services to the world’s poor in hopes of moving individuals and families out of poverty. In 2013 there were 4.7 million active microfinance borrowers in Africa. This represents a smaller percentage of the population compared to other regions of the world, indicating the potential for rapid growth of microfinance in Africa. However, microfinance is maturing, in part due to the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This research examines how ICTs are changing the microfinance industry given recent advancements in mobile banking, Internet usage, and connectivity. By examining the microfinance market structure, we determine …
Sharing The Prosperity: Why We Still Need Organized Labor, Angela B. Cornell
Sharing The Prosperity: Why We Still Need Organized Labor, Angela B. Cornell
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Today economic inequality is greater in the United States than in any other advanced nation. Bringing the minimum wage up to a true living wage is a crucial step forward, as are other employment-related benefits like broadening access to overtime and instituting paid sick leave. But employment statutes such as minimum-wage regulations cannot replace the broad-based benefits that come from organized labor. Unionization places the ability to influence what happens in the workplace directly in workers’ own hands, even as it creates institutions that can advocate for working people at the community, state, and national level. Under an effective labor-law …

Revolutionary Critical Pedagogy: Staking A Claim Against The Macrostructural Unconscious, Peter Mclaren
Revolutionary Critical Pedagogy: Staking A Claim Against The Macrostructural Unconscious, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Critical pedagogy currently exists today as precariously as a shabby lean-to room added to a typical American hall-and-parlor house. I am referring to the type of house that formed the basic English prototype for the classic American building we see everywhere in New England and on the East Coast. If the hall-and-parlor house represents education in the main, then we critical educators are as rare as hen’s teeth, shunted to the rear of the house, squatters huddled under a slanted roof, wearing fingerless gloves, clutching our tin cups of broth, spearing biscuits and dreaming of the day when we will …

Reducing Asymmetric Information In Venture Capital Backed Ipos, Diego Escobari, Alejandro Serrano
Reducing Asymmetric Information In Venture Capital Backed Ipos, Diego Escobari, Alejandro Serrano
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to model asymmetric information and study the profitability of venture capital (VC) backed initial public offerings (IPOs). The mixtures approach endogenously separates IPOs into differentiated groups based on their returns’ determinants. The authors also analyze the factors that affect the probability that IPOs belong to a specific group.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors propose a new method to model asymmetric information between investors and firms in VC backed IPOs. The approach allows the authors to identify differentiated companies under incomplete information. The authors use a sample of 2,404 US firms from 1980 through 2012 to …

An Analysis Of Japan’S Immigration Policy On Migrant Workers And Their Families, Malissa B. Eaddy
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis attempts to provide an analysis of Japan’s immigration policy on migrant workers and their families. I am interested in exploring the interactions between the Japanese government and foreigners during 1960-2014. I have three research questions: (1) What is the Japanese government policy for migrant workers? (2) What is the education status for the children of migrant workers to assimilate into Japanese society? (3) How are migrant workers and families treated by the Japanese government in terms of the human rights and their national rights? I have selected four books as the primary sources for my thesis, and analyzed …

Giving Away The Store: How The Zero Price Constraint Results In Fewer Add-On Features, Ben O. Smith
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper discusses an issue impacting intellectual property products with nearly zero marginal cost: the zero price constraint. As established in the literature, aftermarkets result in a subsidization of the primary market, sometimes resulting in prices below marginal cost. While aftermarket add-ons are now common in intellectual property products such as software, the firms usually can't charge a primary market price below zero. This paper shows that with the zero price constraint in effect, firms give more of the overall product away for free and pricing in the aftermarket is determined by the number of competitors in the primary market; …

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
This is a continuation of a series of studies on problem gambling websites. It has been noted in prior studies that one avenue problem gamblers might look for help was to go online to perform a web search. Online help is practical as help can be located immediately and this can help to ease the gamblers’ concerns that they are left alone to handle their own problems. While there are some anecdotal evidences regarding the success of problem gambling websites, there have been few empirical studies that relate directly to the perceptions and usefulness of the websites for the problem …
