Inequality, Poverty And Economic Growth In Different Income Classifications, Alexandra Zhang Jan 2015

Inequality, Poverty And Economic Growth In Different Income Classifications, Alexandra Zhang

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper defines the relationship between inequality and economic development, analyzes the impact of economic growth on income inequality and poverty rate. The study uses different indicators and panel data over 10 years and across 46 countries worldwide. As the Kuznets Curve suggested, a country’s inequality level and economic development share a non-linear relationship. The author applies this concept to 3 different models and found different results between low and middle-income countries and high-income countries. In result, this study confirms the Kuznets law as the author finds an unequal income distribution in low and middle-income countries.

Peaceful Settlement Of Disputes In The South China Sea Through Fisheries Resources Cooperation And Management, Kuan-Hsiung Wang Jan 2015

Peaceful Settlement Of Disputes In The South China Sea Through Fisheries Resources Cooperation And Management, Kuan-Hsiung Wang

Maryland Series in Contemporary Asian Studies

The South China Sea dispute is complicated in terms of its nature, the sovereignty issues of the islands, delimitation issues, resources utilization as well as other matters concerning security (both traditional and non-traditional). In order to solve the dispute, cooperation is one of the main considerations. However, the practice has not been realized.

In order to solve the dispute and promote cooperation in the South China Sea region, the author suggests that conserving and managing fishery resources could be established as a starting point. There are a great number of management means, institutions, and international instruments (such as conventions, treaties …

The Malaysia Report: National Landscape, Current Challenges And Opportunities For Growth, Institute For Societal Leadership, Natalia R. Rodrigues

Institute of Societal Leadership Research Collection

Malaysia’s story is one of pluralism. Like many nations in Southeast Asia, its borders are not drawn along ethnic lines. Immigration and the influence from colonial European powers were particularly prominent in Malaysia because of its many important ports. Thus, many aspects of the country – its economy, its people – are very different on the coasts than they are in the interior of the country, a distinction which generally mirrors the divide between urban and rural areas as well.

Sustainability In The Curriculum And Teaching Of Economics: Transforming Introductory Macroeconomics, Madhavi Venkatesan Jan 2015

Sustainability In The Curriculum And Teaching Of Economics: Transforming Introductory Macroeconomics, Madhavi Venkatesan

Economics Faculty Publications

Present models of economic growth primarily focus on the role of expenditures as captured in the commonly cited economic indicator, gross domestic product (GDP), where GDP is defined as the sum of final goods and services sold within a country’s natural borders. Noting that a country’s expenditures are referred to as “aggregate expenditures” and that the majority of spending is specific to consumption or consumer spending, especially in the United States where this spending category is nearly two-thirds of annual GDP (other expenditure categories for GDP include investment spending, government spending and foreign spending as proxied by net exports), there …

Effects Of Husband’S Education On Wife’S Earnings: The Recent Evidence, Humenghe Zhao Jan 2015

Effects Of Husband’S Education On Wife’S Earnings: The Recent Evidence, Humenghe Zhao

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper aims to examine the relationship between husband’s education and his wife’s earnings. The study builds upon previous literature revolving around the relationship between a woman’s human capital and her husband’s earnings. Using pooled cross-sectional data from the Current Population Survey (CPS), I adjust the OLS wage model to estimate whether a man’s human capital has positive effects on his wife’s earnings. Two major hypotheses concerning the correlation between spousal education and earnings are cross-productivity effect between couples and assortative mating. Using the original regression model, I also estimate a sub-sample designed to restrict the effects of positive assortative …

Do Living Wages Alter The Effect Of The Minimum Wage On Income Inequality?, Benjamin S. Litwin Jan 2015

Do Living Wages Alter The Effect Of The Minimum Wage On Income Inequality?, Benjamin S. Litwin

Gettysburg Economic Review

Anker (2006) proposed a new methodology for calculating the living wage in countries around the world. By looking at OECD nations between 2000-2010, we look to see if countries with a national minimum wage higher than this living wage value see a notable difference in the effect of the minimum wage on income inequality. Our results show that countries with the minimum wage higher than the living wage value do see lower inequality, although there is a key value of the minimum wage, at which countries start to see disemployment effects that increase inequality.

Nominal Gdp Targeting: A Policy Recommendation To Meet The Fed’S Dual Mandate, R. Shaw Bridges Jan 2015

Nominal Gdp Targeting: A Policy Recommendation To Meet The Fed’S Dual Mandate, R. Shaw Bridges

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper was written in early December 2014 in response to the Federal Reserve Challenge Team’s argument for a regime change in the Federal Reserve to nominal GDP targeting as the appropriate policy to return the U.S. economy to long-term sustainable economic growth. After the 2007 recession, the FOMC took extraordinary measures to minimize the collateral damage caused by bank balance sheets weighed down with mortgage-backed securities and other below-investment grade assets. The periodic “stress tests” and use of emergency lending facilities were historically unprecedented, however, the economy six years later was still growing slowly in part due to market …

Examining The Impact Of Casinos On Economic Development: A Spatial Analysis Of The Counties In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Andrew J. Economopoulos Jan 2015

Examining The Impact Of Casinos On Economic Development: A Spatial Analysis Of The Counties In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Few have formally evaluated the economic impact of casinos, and yet most agree that it is crucial in estimating the net benefit to society. A new casino investment should stimulate economic activity in the immediate region, but its operations could potentially reduce employment and incomes within the industry. Grinols outlines the factors that could lead to positive or negative growth from the investment, but what is critical to the empirical validation of the investment is the definition of region. Since data is geographically limited to political boundaries, it is necessary to employ a spatial methodology that captures the impact beyond …

How Do Incremental Wage Increases Affect Low-Wage Workers’ Health Levels?, Cory Stern Jan 2015

How Do Incremental Wage Increases Affect Low-Wage Workers’ Health Levels?, Cory Stern

Award Winning Economics Papers

This paper estimates the demand for health among low-wage American workers. I incorporate theoretical assumptions and empirical findings from the fields of food and health economics to derive a utility-maximization framework, which posits health is a normal good. Using data from the Panel Study on Income Dynamics, I then regress an ordered probit random effects model to isolate the effect of income fluctuations on health over time. These results are statistically significant and robust to numerous specification checks, suggesting low-wage workers experience improved health levels as their wages increase. These findings deserve further inquiry to better-inform the current public debate …

Urban Mayors Policy Center

This Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) is the outgrowth of a long running effort by the John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy at Thomas Edison State College (Watson Institute) to support economic and community development in New Jersey with a particular focus on urban areas in need of revitalization. The Watson Institute was previously awarded a United States Economic Development Administration (USEDA) grant to complete an economic analysis of the North Central New Jersey Region. The USEDA approved that analysis and awarded additional funds to continue our work, culminating in this CEDS plan.

Several years ago, the Watson Institute …

Terror Attacks And Bond Yields In The European Union: An Autogressive Transfer Function Approach, Benjamin Goldman Jan 2015

Terror Attacks And Bond Yields In The European Union: An Autogressive Transfer Function Approach, Benjamin Goldman

Award Winning Economics Papers

This article seeks a connection between the rate at which governments can borrow money and terrorist activity within their country. Government borrowing habits can play a large role in economic growth, and understanding the determinants of the rate at which money can be borrowed is valuable. The traditional bond yield study includes various macroeconomic indicators and estimates the role that they play in the borrow- ing rate. A straightforward theory to connect utility theory of consumer choice to risk preferences and the decision to invest in a bond is derived. Using data from the Inter- national Monetary Fund and University …

The Role Of Fdi, Oda, Remittances, And Institutions On Economic Development In Developing Countries, William Manak

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper seeks to evaluate the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), official development assistance (ODA), and migrant remittances to economic growth in developing countries, while also taking into account the qualities of the institutions of the countries. This study uses the linear system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) method as developed by Blundell and Bond (1998). Current research has been focused on adding institutions to growth models to understand how institutional quality can help improve outcomes in developing countries. This paper plans to further the discussion on how institutional quality affects FDI, ODA, and remittances. Institutional quality is measured …

The Cost Of Float To A Firm: Commercial Banking Treasury Management Analysis Case Study, Patricia R. Robertson Jan 2015

The Cost Of Float To A Firm: Commercial Banking Treasury Management Analysis Case Study, Patricia R. Robertson

Faculty Articles

This case is ideal for an upper-level finance course that has an emphasis on short-term financial management. Despite significant advancements in electronic payment systems, most U.S. firms continue to pay invoices with paper checks mailed to suppliers. So long as the checks are received by the due date, firms are in compliance with supplier credit terms. However, paper checks must be processed and recorded by the supplier, deposited in the supplier’s bank, and cleared against the payer’s bank before the cash is transferred from the payer’s checking account to the supplier’s checking account. This delay in the conversion of a …

Affordable Housing, Thomas Power

Articles

The McKinsey Global Institute, an economic think-tank, last year published a report on global housing. The report finds that City dwellers globally pay $650bn a year more on housing costs than they can afford and wages of low income earners lag growth in housing costs leading to greater income inequality and out-migration of skilled workers.

Adam Smith And The History Of Economic Thought: The Case Of Banking, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2015

Adam Smith And The History Of Economic Thought: The Case Of Banking, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Adam Smith promotes markets because of their efficiency and because of their ability to develop and support moral social life. His views on banking are an example of his broader view. According to Smith banks should be allowed to issue their own money and compete in a minimally regulated environment. On the one hand, competition, including the possibility of bank failures, generates discipline, and discipline generates prudent behavior. On the other hand, competition in the banking sector is generated and maintained by prudent behavior. The prudent behavior of morally responsible banks is rewarded with economic success and it supports the …
