Female Disadvantage In The Egyptian Labor Market: A Youth Perspective, Maia Sieverding

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In this brief, three aspects of female youth’s disadvantage in the labor market are analyzed: low labor force participation, high unemployment, and concentration in the public sector. These issues are closely interrelated and can be addressed through a set of policies that promote family-friendly employment conditions and the formalization of the private sector. The establishment of job search services for female youth is also critical to addressing the gender gap in unemployment.

This article provides an exegesis of the recently entered-into-force African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. Democracy has a decidedly mixed history in Africa and, despite a concerted effort by the African Union (AU), it has made only halting inroads in those states that are nondemocratic or struggling to consolidate democracy. That may change as more states ratify and implement the Charter, a comprehensive regional attempt to promote, protect, and consolidate democracy that entered into force in February 2012. Creating Critical Consumers Of Economics In The Media: A New Approach And Empirical Findings

This paper develops a flexible reading and writing intensive project designed to improve students’ ability to apply core economic principles to current world economic issues, and foster a greater enthusiasm for learning and using the subject. This project was evaluated in two principles of macroeconomics sections whose outcomes were compared to a control class. Results indicate that this approach significantly improves both attitudes and reported knowledge of economics.

Are Mathematics, Economics, And Accounting Courses Important Determinants In Financial Management: A Rank Order Approach

Using an ordered probit model, we examine the determinants of student performance in an introductory, junior level financial management course at a rural state university in the eastern United States. It is discovered that the cumulative grade point average and academic major of a student are marginally significant predictors of that student’s final letter grade in the course. There is a much more significant positive relationship between grades received in two prerequisite mathematics courses and the grade in the introductory finance course. The letter grade received in the prerequisite microeconomics course reveals the phenomenon of persistence in that the probability …

This article examines the dynamic relationship between macroeconomic performance and measures of poverty in the United States. The article is organized as follows. Section 2 presents insights on the relationship between poverty and macroeconomic performance that emerge from the literature. The emphasis is on empirical studies from 1986 to 2011. Section 3 provides a snapshot of the change in poverty over National Bureau of Economic Research-dated recessions for a variety of poverty measures. Payday lending is controversial. In the states that allow it, payday lenders make cash loans that are typically for $500 or less, and the borrower must repay or renew the loan on his or her next payday. The finance charge for the loan is usually 15 to 20 percent of the amount advanced, so for a typical two-week loan the annual percentage interest rate is about 400 percent. This article describes the payday-lending business and explains why it presents challenging public-policy issues. The Wealth Effects Of The 2010-2011 Arab Uprisings: A Market Model Event Study, Rachit Khaitan

Previous empirical analyses have concluded that political events can have significant linkages with stock returns. Using Brown & Warner’s (1984) OLS market model, I examine the effect of political disruptions in the 2010-2011 Arab uprisings on major stock indices of Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and London. My analysis finds mostly negative abnormal returns, highly statistically significant relative to the S&P 500, associated with many key events between December 1^st, 2010 and December 1^st, 2011. My findings suggest that the loss of investor wealth can be attributed to dramatic regime changes and large scale …

The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of offs ho ring on wage inequality and labor productivity in the U.S. Short-run and long-run data tests are undertaken to analyze the relationship among off shoring, wage inequality, and labor productivity in the U.S. Cointegration tests indicate that these three variables are related in the long-run. The main contribution of this paper lies in its focus on the short-run investigation of the relationship among these three variables. Pharmaceutical companies have strong economic interests in influencing physician-prescribing behaviors. They advertise direct-to-the-consumer and to the physician. Beyond general marketing, manufacturers promote their drugs to physicians through “detailing”—sales representatives (“detailers”) visiting medical offices to persuade physicians to prescribe their products.

By law, pharmacies receive specific information with every prescription, including the physician’s name, the drug, and the dose. Pharmacies sell these records to Prescription Drug Intermediaries (data miners), who use advanced computing to analyze prescriber-identified information (which physicians prescribe what drugs, in what dose, and with what prescribing patterns). Data miners, in turn, lease sophisticated reports to pharmaceutical companies to …

Pony Distress: Using Espn’S 30for30 Films To Teach Cartel Theory

This study provides a roadmap for economics instructors to use a graphical model along with various clips from ESPN’s critically-acclaimed 30FOR30 films series in order to complement classroom discussion of cartel theory, particularly the story of the National Collegiate Athletics Association as a cartel. The two films used here are Thaddeus D. Matula’s Pony Excess (2010) and Jonathan Hock’s The Best that Never Was (2010). Each chronicles the rampant rules-breaking, or cartel cheating, in college football during the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in the “Death Penalty” at SMU and the collapse of the Southwest Conference cartel.
